Week Five – Tutorial Highlights

Some great handouts here:

The first is from Abbie, which accompanied a cracking tutorial on Context, Relevance and Blackboard Jungle. Abbie’s thesis was as follows:

Blackboard Jungle’s representation of teenagers, in particular males, as disrespectful, rebellious and violent, is fuelled by the cultural context at the time of production (1955).

Have a look:

The second, from Danijela, offers an excellent insight into West Side Story, and is based on the thesis that the film uses new techniques such as singing and dancing to capture an audience and create awareness of issues such as gangs, violence, bullying, prejudice, hate, and loss of self- esteem amongst teenagers.

Georgia’s tutorial on Gidget included a comparison to the 1960s short story “Debut” by Kristin Hunter. The story offers an alternate portrait of adolescent America – one that is African American, lower-class and perhaps a little more dangerous. Georgia has annotated half the story for you. Try annotating the rest on your own.
