Composing: drama doesn’t have to be disturbing

One message that seems to come through time and again from WACE markers is that they don’t want students writing horrific, disturbing pieces for the Composing section. Yes, conflict and drama are a necessary part of any narrative, but ‘conflict’ can come in many forms. Markers have said that they don’t need to be ‘shocked’ in order to be impressed.

So, how about trying your hand at a dramatic story with a happy outcome?

Use the following news story (and accompanying video) as a prompt for the opening of a narrative piece from the point of view of one of the adults in the story.

Focus on paragraphing, variation of sentence length and use of physical senses.
