Imaginative Writing

Week Five – Stimulus Writing

One of the hardest things to do in English is to write imaginatively. I often wondered, of late, whether this is a direct result of smart phones, social media and technology in general that has made, in many ways, our imaginations redundant. Now, rather than beginning a debate on the matter, I want you to have a look at the images below.

These were used in a composing assessment and students were asked to choose one and then write an imaginative piece on it that focussed on the or one of the people in the image.

Activity

  1. Which image would you choose?
  2. Why would you choose it?
  3. What is it about the image that caught your eye?
  4. What was it about the person in the image you’ve chosen that made you feel like you could write more about them?
  5. What is their story?
  6. You don’t have time to write about everything, so which part of their story would you write about?
  7. Write a 500 word short narrative on the chosen image. It must be exactly 500 words. It must include dialogue. It must have a title. It must capture the unique voice of the person you’ve chosen in the image to write about.
