Week Four – California, New York and the London Docks

Gidget, West Side Story, and To Sir With Love arise during a period of turmoil, when old ways and grand narratives about gender, race and class are being questioned.

In the first case we see the bizarre notion, at the time, of a female surfer and, in the latter film, an impoverished working class class of students who struggle with self-belief, abandonment and  disenfranchisement.
