Term 1, Week 11

From the Heart; a Leadership Reflection

Encouraging responsibility in children; a gift for their future

As parents and educators, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to take responsibility for themselves. While it’s often easier (and quicker!) to step in and do things for them, allowing children to take ownership of their actions, tasks, and commitments is essential for their growth.

At both home and school, children are given opportunities to build responsibility; from packing their school bag and completing homework to managing their belongings and making thoughtful choices. These small but meaningful responsibilities lay the foundation for independence, resilience, and confidence as they grow.

Of course, responsibility doesn’t mean perfection. Mistakes will happen; forgotten lunchboxes, misplaced homework, or unmade beds, but these moments provide valuable lessons. Instead of stepping in to fix every problem, guiding children to find solutions strengthens their problem-solving skills and prepares them for future challenges.

This journey is most effective when home and school work together. At school, educators support students in developing accountability, perseverance, and a sense of ownership over their learning. At home, parents can reinforce these skills through simple daily tasks, helping with household chores, or making decisions about their schedules.

By working in partnership, we can empower our children to embrace responsibility with confidence, setting them up for success not just in school but in all aspects of life.

Children’s University

I hope all new students have now had the chance to log into the CU portal since receiving their passports.  The upcoming holiday is a great way to spend some time having fun learning and earning hours towards graduation.

Early last week I sent you an email from ECU about the free workshops they offer CU students.  From experience, I highly recommend these workshops.  The email contains all the instruction on how to register for a workshop – please note, it is one workshop per student per holiday period.

I have also attached a choice board for some Autumn holiday fun.  Each activity will earn 30 mins – do one or do them all.

One more passport signing session this term – this Thursday before school in the primary forum.
