Term 4 – Notices – Week 3

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Languages Week! This is a week in which we celebrate all of the various nations, cultures and languages that come together to make us who we are as a school community. Across this week, there will be a number of different language-based activities and events which the children will be getting involved in, and I want to thank Madame Penin for all of her effort and passion in planning for this week.

Of course, there are also a number of other events happening this week, so here’s a short summary of those:

  • Monday 25 to Wednesday 27
    • Continuation of Synthesis Art Exhibition in the 3-6 Primary Village and theatre foyer.
  • Tuesday 26
    • Languages Week Canteen Meal Deal
  • Friday 29
    • Assembly Kindy (combined)
    • PP Pirate Day Camp
    • Disco – K-6 in Cousins Hall

Have a wonderful week, and we look forward to seeing so many of you at the disco on Friday!

Class Placement 2022

As we prepare for 2022, we would like to take the opportunity to inform you of the process we use when placing students in their classes for next year. Please note that all teachers place students after examination of several factors which include:

  • Social and emotional concerns
  • Friendship preferences
  • Academic ability
  • Staff observations

Your child’s current class teachers construct their class lists in collaboration with their partner year group Teacher(s), Learning Assistance and Specialist Teachers. Where possible, the teaching staff will provide experiences for students to interact across the classes to also observe student interactions with students not currently in their class.

Once the teachers have completed their class list recommendations, they are forwarded on to the Primary Leadership Team. Class lists are reviewed by leadership.

The process of creating class lists is done carefully and over a period of time. Please be assured that every decision we make is in the best interests of your child and understand that, while we recognise the uniqueness and preferences of each student, we will not guarantee a preferred placement. Please, can I encourage you to trust in the professionalism and dedication of our staff as they consider the many factors in placing your child in a particular class and not make requests for preferred class placements for your child.

You will be notified of your child’s teacher in January 2022 before they commence school on Friday 28 January.

Bottom car park flow

We understand that a number of students get collected in the car park at the bottom end of Hamer Oval. While this is perfectly fine to do, we request that you don’t use the area as a Kiss-and-Drive. In recent weeks, this practice has started to cause more congestion than it is intended to, so if you would please park in the available bays, that would be appreciated. If there aren’t any bays available, we do need you to keep on driving to allow traffic to flow and others to exit their bays. Thank you for understanding and for helping with this.

Multi-cultural dress up day: Friday 29th October (Yrs 3 – 6)

In order to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity and end Languages Week in a fun way, let’s all dress up in cultural dress from all over the world!

DATE FOR THE FETE

The date has been set for the 2022 Duncraig Fete! Save Saturday, October 29 in your calendars. In the meantime, the Fete Committee is looking for members to help out with the planning process and volunteers to assist on the day. If you would like to help out, host a stall or for any more information, please contact Julie Wookey on juliewookey12@gmail.com by the end of November.

ELC Resource Lists 2022

Please ensure that you go on line and pay for your booklist requirements at your earliest convenience.  All K – 2 students are required to go online and order.

Please note that items ticked as “Item Required” on your child’s booklist need to be purchased directly from Campion. The link to the Campion website is: www.campion.com.au and the code to use is KKYF. Once you have logged in, you will be able to see your 2022 year level booklist.

Understanding that ‘back to school’ can be an expensive cost to families, our staff have made a conscious effort to keep the cost to a minimum.

Term 4 – Notices – Week 2

Dear Families and Community.

Last week saw the Year 6 students return from camp. They had a wonderful time with lots of activities and memories made.  This concludes all the camps that have taken place across the year levels. Our students have been provided with fantastic experiences and I know that the staff have enjoyed spending time with their students outside the standard school time.

This week has started off with lots of ‘eggcitement’ in Year 2 as the students await the arrival of babies chicks in their classroom.  Be sure to check in on the Year 2 blog to see how things are progressing and meet the new additions as they arrive. On Thursday  21 October, we have the Opening Night for the Synthesis Art exhibition. This will be running until  Wednesday 27 October. Please come and take a look at the wonderful Art that is on display. We would like to thank our talented Art staff and students for the beautiful work that is on display and their hard work in putting this together. At the ELC this Friday 22 October, we have Worship with our Kindy and Pre Primary students. Family members are very welcome to come and join us for this fun-filled, bible-based Worship. Over at 3-6, 4B will be presenting their class assembly at 2.20. Please come along and learn what our Year 4 class have been doing and learning this semester.

At both the ELC and 3 -6 offices you will see a box filled with poppies for sale ready for Remembrance Day. Please support us in raising money for this cause by purchasing a poppies for a small donation. You hopefully will have seen in your child’s  class blogs, diary or  on this blog, information about the upcoming Primary Disco K-6 on Friday 29 October. If your child is attending this event, please return the cut-off slip with the correct money inside an envelope to Admin by tomorrow. This information from the returned slips will help our Disco organisers with allocating correct catering and an idea of the number of students attending.

Please take time to scroll through the various posts to ensure you are up to date with what is happening in the upcoming weeks ahead.

Hope you have a lovely week ahead.

God bless,

Hannah Lockwood-Jones and Jarrod Heglund.

2.  Year 5 and 6 Inter School Cricket Try-Outs

RE: TRY OUTS

This term on Friday 19 November, our school is registered to play in an inter school cricket competition at Seacrest Oval in Sorrento. It is open to year 5 and 6 students.

Unfortunately the number of students that are able to participate is quite restricted. We are only able to field two boys teams and two girls teams which are made up of eight players. Therefore only 16 girls and 16 boys will be able to play.

Therefore over the first few weeks, try-outs will be held to determine selection of the teams. Try outs will be held at lunchtimes(1:10p 1:40p). Try-outs will be held on the basketball courts.

First round – Thursday 21 October – girls, Friday 22 October – boys

Second round – Thursday 28 October – girls, Friday 29 October – boys

Third round – Thursday 4 November – girls, Friday 5 November – boys

Final round(if necessary) –  Thursday 11 November – girls, Friday 12 November – boys

The type of cricket that we will be playing is called super 8s cricket which is a very fast paced version of the game. Every player will have to bat and bowl. Selection criteria will be strongly based on a students ability to hit with consistent power and accuracy and when bowling, to bowl very accurately and deceptively.

3.    Sorrento Beach Bike Ride and Beach Day – Thursday 2 December

WE NEED MORE PARENT HELPERS!

Dear Year 6 Parents/Guardians

RE: Many Parent Helpers Required

The year 5 and 6 bike lessons are excellent preparation for our Bike Excursion to Sorrento Beach.

The Bike Excursion to Sorrento Beach simply involves a ride, on cycle paths, from the school alongside Hepburn Avenue down to the south side of Hillarys Marina.  At the beach, students will participate in a variety of beach activities before enjoying a BBQ lunch. After the lunch, we will all ride back to St Stephens. This day is very enjoyable and is a great activity for our year 6 students in their last year of Primary School.

For this event to take place however we will need strong participation by parents or relatives. So if you are able to participate, please let me know at Daniel.parker@ststephens.wa.edu.au as soon as possible. For supervision reasons, there will be a critical number of adult help that we will require if this event is to take place. Also, be aware, that you do not need to be a professional cyclist. It is meant to be a casual ride, and I simply require adults that have a sound understanding of traffic movements and are able to make sensible decisions.

This year’s theme is: Roll Up, Roll Up, It’s Circus Time.

There will be plenty for your little ones to see and do, with stage shows, roaming performers and circus workshops for all ages. They will also enjoy clowning around as they discover the clues to find their way through the Marvellous Maze.

Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Since the first Little Feet Festival in 1993, the event has been held annually providing young families with children an afternoon of free entertainment and activities to enjoy. Professional artists facilitate meaningful experiences for children and their families through creative art activities and performances.

Keep an eye on the City’s website (https://www.joondalup.wa.gov.au/little-feet-festival-7) and Facebook to find out further information.

Poppies will be available in the school reception areas and can be purchased for a gold coin donation in the lead up to Remembrance Day, November 11.

All Poppy Appeal donations go directly into assisting veterans, and their families, in need. The importance of these funds continues to be highly relevant as we support veterans of recent conflicts, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, alongside the aging population from past conflicts.

Term 4 – Notices – Week 1

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful time with your children at home over the break and that you managed to build some great memories. I know the staff found the break to be a restful and recharging time and have used today to be upskilled in various areas as well as prepare for the arrival of students tomorrow.

As Term 4 always is, this is an exciting and full term, with camps, Language’s Week, discos, concerts, Presentation Night and so much more. Here are a few events coming up to keep in mind over the next fortnight:

  • Wednesday – Friday

Year 6 camp at Manjedal Activity Centre

  • Thursday Week 2

Opening night for Synthesis Art Exhibition

We are looking forward to a great term.

MAGPIES SWOOPING

We have been informed that people are being swooped by a magpie near the carpark bordering Doveridge Drive. Please be careful as you move through this area or, if possible, give the area a wide berth. The following points, from the City of Wanneroo, may help in keeping you and your children safe:

  • Never deliberately provoke or harass a magpie. Throwing sticks or stones usually makes them more defensive. Magpies have good memories and may continuously swoop a potential aggressor.
  • Locate the bird and keep watching it when entering its territory. If it swoops, don’t crouch in fear or stop: move on quickly but don’t run.
  • If you are riding a bike, make sure you wear a helmet and dismount bikes and walk through magpie areas.
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses and carry an umbrella for protection. Magpies initially attack from behind but can swoop back around.
  • Adopt a confident stance as this can have a strong deterrent effect.
