GENTECH

The first successful GENTECH – pop up computer help desk took place on Monday 7th August with Year 8 IT gurus Tom Cordell, Sam Gulliver, Sahib Sandhoo, Alex Huynh, Cameron Kiss and Mr Drake setting up shop at Wanneroo Shopping Centre.

GENTECH is a great St Stephen’s Community Service/Technology collaboration providing computer help to our senior members of the community, like the slogan says, “Computer ABC’s by Generation XYZ’s.

The next August sessions will be Tuesday 15th 10:00am – 12:00pm, Monday 21st 11:00am – 1:00pm and Tuesday 29th 10:00am – 12:00pm. It is hoped that GENTECH will be appearing at Hepburn Heights and Whitfords shopping centres in the near future.

Senior Football (soccer)

The Carramar senior boys football (soccer) team took on Morley SHS last week in a knockout final.

After going down a goal just before half time the boys kicked 2 goals in the second half to secure a 2-1 win and a spot in the top 16 school teams in WA.

Well done lads!

Parental must-read

Parents are you aware that the latest update of SnapChat now tracks your child’s location and marks their location on a map for other users to see?

Cyber Expert Jordan from ySafe alerted us to this change and recommends that you turn off this function.

To do this, go into your child’s SnapChat account, and follow the instructions below:

    1. Open the app and immediately scroll down.

    2. Click on the settings button (the gear icon) in the top right hand corner.

    3. Scroll down and under the ‘Who can..’ section, click on ‘See my location’

    4. Turn on ‘Ghost Mode’

If the settings aren’t visible, you may need to pinch the screen when the camera is open in the app to access it.

In the interest of student safety, as a school, we recommend the implementation of these changes.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Make Your Own Storybook

Congratulations to 8 of our Year 7 Humanities Enrichment students who entered the Make Your Own Storybook Competition run by The Children’s Book Council. Over the last 8 weeks the students have learnt how to construct sophisticated picture books targeted to older students and have produced their own exceptional stories.

The books will be on display in the library later in the year when they return from judging.

Please congratulate Abbie McCrum, Blake Fletcher, Mia Marcuccilli, Abigail Legge, Nicholas Tully, Montana Madsen, Aaron Popich and Falgun Batavia.

Debating

Congratulations to our Novice debating team who won their debate on Tuesday 30 May against Duncraig Senior High School in the West Australian Debating League competition.

The topic of the debate was,  “That schools should prioritise the learning of indigenous languages over foreign languages” and we were the negative team. We created a compelling argument against this motion by stating that logistically this would be very difficult to implement, and there are more effective ways of teaching respect and understanding for Aboriginal culture.

Well done to Darcy Beckitt (7), Tahlia Beckitt (8) and Falgun Batavia (7).

Autumn Concert

On Wednesday 31 May, Carramar secondary music students delivered an inspiring performance at the Autumn Music Concert! A collection of ensembles presented a variety of styles ranging from Beethoven to Lois Armstrong. All in attendance agreed that the evening was a wonderful celebration of the achievements of our dedicated students and staff. Congratulations to our Percussion Ensemble for their debut performance!

“What a beautiful, upbeat and uplifting evening. Congratulations on the set, lighting, and of course, the performances. Wonderful to see so many students excelling in their music.” Liz Kirby

“It was beautiful! Congratulations to all the wonderful teachers, musicians and singers and faithful alumni! Hard work, passion and team work always pay off and bring an everlasting SMILE :)” Emel Cobanlar

UCW Winter Appeal – update

Thank you to the students and their families for the generous donations that will help members of both our local community and the inner city regions.

Each of the three Year 7 homerooms have worked together to collect items suitable for the Winter Appeal. In the table below is a sample of the sorts of donations that are required.

Sorry Day

St Stephen’s students, Corey Broad, Blake Smith, Naomi Velterop, Oliver Williams, Demi Egan, Bradley Doig, Ella Baker, Angelia Effendi and Elly Palmer attended the Sorry Day Event in Wellington Square along with 2500 people to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the handing down of the Bringing Them Home Report.

The students ran a stall during the day and enjoyed the music, dance and activities from local Aboriginal performers as well as a special performance by Archie Roach.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW)

Reconciliation: is a ”coming together” as a nation with the aims to achieve justice, recognition and healing. National Reconciliation Week’s (NRW) theme this year was “Let’s take the next steps”.

St Stephen’s School Carramar (secondary campus) began NRW with students presenting information at House assembly about the steps taken in our past towards reconciliation. Examples used included the 1967 Referendum, the Native Title Act, the Bringing Them Home Report, Government recognition through Paul Keating’s Redfern Speech and Kevin Rudd’s Apology to the Stolen Generations. All students were invited to wear a lilac ribbon for NRW to raise awareness and show support for reconciliation.

Year 10 students Carla Dias, Fion Edmonds and Monique Madsen gave presentations to year 5 and 6 students and received a warm reception and it was pleasing to see so many younger students knowing so much about reconciliation.
