A Word From Woodstock

It’s safe to say our students are immersing themselves in India’s rich culture on the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ India Service Tour. On day four at Woodstock students spent the morning painting the new library at Kaplani Village School before setting off on an Indian food safari to the town of Mussoorie. Duncraig and Carramar teacher Dr Mark Fielding has received a scholarship to further his professional development and enhance the education sector. Dr Fielding, Director of Global Programs at St Stephen’s School, was awarded one of six national $5000 scholarships by NGS Super. The awards help teachers, support and management staff of non government schools to pursue their  professional goals and make an impact on the wider education sector. Dr Fielding was awarded the scholarship to further enhance St Stephen’s School’s partnership with two indigenous schools – Yiyili and Purnululu Aboriginal Schools – as part of its commitment to building education opportunities and reconciliation in the East Kimberly region. “Our goal was to establish permanent and  meaningful partnerships with Yiyili and Purnululu Schools that were mutually beneficial to all involved,” Dr Fielding said.

Carols at Regents Garden

This week, residents at Regents Garden Residential Care Home were treated to a special Christmas Carol performance from Carramar students. The Primary Vocal Ensemble joined their Secondary peers in song as part of the St Stephen’s Service Learning Program. What a great opportunity to spread Christmas cheer while serving the wider community!

ACT UP

Carramar Senior Drama students ventured into Perth’s cultural hub last week. They explored the Heath Ledger Exhibition: Life in Pictures at the Art Gallery of WA followed by a viewing of Mr Robot by the Barking Gecko Theatre Company. After the show, the group were lucky enough to have a private question and answer session with the show’s director Matt Edgerton and the cast and crew. What a coup!

INDIA BOUND

Our first St Stephen’s Global service tour to India departed Saturday 18 November. A group of 13 Year 12 students from Duncraig and Carramar will be working in and around Woodstock School, located at 2300m above sea level, in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas in Uttarakhand State. The group have been working hard over the last six months. They have prepared for their service by learning basic Hindi and studying Indian history, culture, people and issues of the region. They will also have an opportunity to visit Delhi and the Taj Mahal. We wish them all the best for the trip and we’re sure there will be many enriching stories to tell upon their return.

Photo Finish

Carramar Year 10 student, Harman Heer has been named as the winner of Best Photographic Series in the Mesh at Murdoch Awards for 2017. Harman entered an inspiring series of wildlife images taken on a trip to Africa – his ultimate goal to become a National Geographic photographer. Head of The Arts at Carramar Mrs Lesley Nation said Harman was the first person she thought of when the competition application came across her desk. “I knew he had an impressive body of work and he is such an exceptional talent and a lovely, humble young man – what an exciting win for him and for the School.” Best of luck to Harman for the overall Gold Mesh Award announcement in December.

Sports Awards Night

St Stephen’s Carramar had their annual Sports Awards Night on Wednesday 8 November. Over 330 staff, students and parents were in attendance celebrating the achievements of our young sportsmen and sportswomen.

For only the second time St Stephen’s Carramar competed in the School Sports WA Champion Schools Competition and in doing so we had over 400 participants in 65 teams over 18 different sports take the field, court, track and pool in 2017. Whilst we are still chasing that elusive state title we did come close with our cricket, basketball and soccer teams all making the finals stages of the state wide competition.

We have had many individual success stories with many of our students making state and even national teams. In our school community we have numerous state representatives: Thalia Bryant, Imogen Resta and Emily Alexander in Netball, Daniel Vlahov in Basketball, Jordan Waldock in Baseball, Ky Landers, Nathan Alexander and Caleb Lampard in Beach and Hardcourt Volleyball, Brayden Smith, Jacob Smith and Byron Kimber in Swimming, Jaidyn Rodrigues in Lacrosse, Kirstin Rudgeley in Golf, Brooke Hurst in Hockey, Isabella Martin for Triathlon and Ami Dique and Isabella Lawrence in Equestrian. Elijah Thomas received an ACC All Stars nomination for athletics and Brayden Smith and Jacob Smith received ACC All Stars nominations for swimming. We really are surrounded by some amazing talent.

The group photo below shows our All Star Award winners, they are the students who were a part of our athletics, cross country and swimming inter-school teams. An amazing effort by all!
