The Carramar senior boys volleyball team played in the State Championships Saturday 26 August.
The boys competed in the Open Honours Division for the first time ever, playing some fantastic team volleyball. They made the semi finals, placing them in the top four teams in the state.
Congratulations to Nathan Alexander, Ky Landers, Jeremy Dyer, Calvin Tran, Caleb Lampard, Liam Page, Luke Marmion and Rhys Craven.
On Monday 28 August, the Year 9 extension Science class visited the Harry Perkins BioDiscovery Centre in Nedlands, which forms part of the medical research facilities for UWA. Students were there to learn about the diagnosis and treatment of the different types of diabetes, which forms part of their study of body systems in Year 9 Science. Students conducted hands-on activities; testing samples for sugar levels and later, testing for insulin levels. Students then had to ascertain, through further testing, whether or not a sample was from a potential diabetic or not. Students were working in state-of-the-art laboratories with equipment such as calibrated pipettes and digital data-loggers.
This was a wonderful opportunity for students to get a feel for Science research in general and medical research in particular.

During Science Week the Year 12 Biology and Human Biology students were treated to a presentation by renowned scientist and plastic surgeon Professor Fiona Wood. Quantum theory aside, at this moment in time it is still difficult for someone to be in two places at the same time so thanks to our innovative technology whilst Professor Wood was ‘live at Duncraig’ our students could take part in the presentation using our extended classroom facility.
Professor Wood’s greatest contribution and enduring legacy is her work pioneering the innovative ‘spray-on skin’ technique (Recell), which greatly reduces permanent scarring in burns victims. Professor Wood patented her method in 1993 and today the technique is used worldwide.
Professor Wood spoke about what motivated her to begin her journey, how the technology was developed, how it is still being improved upon and what is her next challenge.

The St Stephens Carramar golf team of Rhys Craven, Kirsten Rudgeley and Matthew Pickersgill braved the terrible conditions on Monday and took part in the WA High Schools Cup.
The team finished a creditable 13th out of 50 teams. Congratulations one and all!
Year 7,8 and 9 students from Carramar competed in the Alkimos and Beach division basketball carnival and our girls team have progressed into the northern suburbs championships!
Well done to all those who competed.
The first successful GENTECH – pop up computer help desk took place on Monday 7th August with Year 8 IT gurus Tom Cordell, Sam Gulliver, Sahib Sandhoo, Alex Huynh, Cameron Kiss and Mr Drake setting up shop at Wanneroo Shopping Centre.
GENTECH is a great St Stephen’s Community Service/Technology collaboration providing computer help to our senior members of the community, like the slogan says, “Computer ABC’s by Generation XYZ’s.
The next August sessions will be Tuesday 15th 10:00am – 12:00pm, Monday 21st 11:00am – 1:00pm and Tuesday 29th 10:00am – 12:00pm. It is hoped that GENTECH will be appearing at Hepburn Heights and Whitfords shopping centres in the near future.
Congratulations to the Year 11 Carramar netball team who played in the State Elimination Finals at Fremantle Netball Association on Friday 28 July.
Results on the day didn’t quite go our way but a great effort by the girls to make the top 22 schools in the state.
