Students on a Mission

St Stephen’s School Carramar Home Economics students put the old adage of learning with purpose into practice last term, drawing on their sewing skills to help those less fortunate.
Spurred on by the words of Mission Australia WA Chaplain Scott Vawser, who took time to speak to the students about the impact of drugs, alcohol and homelessness on Perth’s youth, the Year 11 and 12 students created care packages for Mission Australia’s Drug and Alcohol Youth Service (DAYS), which provides a comprehensive range of treatment and support services to youth battling drug and alcohol issues. Carramar Canberra Tour 2018

During the recent July holiday break a group of 19 Year 9 students and 3 staff from Carramar had the opportunity to participate in a 7 day educational tour to Sydney and Canberra. It certainly was a busy schedule and they managed to visit a host of special places which included the old Parliament and current Parliament Houses, Questacon, the National Capital Exhibition, the High Court, the National Gallery, the National War Memorial and the Australian Institute of Sport, as well as the Perisher ski-fields, where the students very much enjoyed the snow. They absorbed a considerable amount of Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy, with education and fun going hand in hand as it should.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank the Australian Government, who through their support of the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER), helped make the trip to the national capital more affordable through this funding process.

Special thanks to Mr Langley, Mrs Cross and Ms Percy for working with the awesome students who participated in this successful tour.

Year 9 and 10 cross-campus students on the Lou Morrison Kimberley Tour will spend time at Indigenous community schools, learning about the Indigenous culture and language, while running sport events and discos. Meanwhile, Carramar’s Year 9 students are currently exploring our nation’s capital on the Canberra Tour!

Team Work Makes the Dream Work

Our Year 10 students teamed up with Rocky Bay recently to help pack bags for Vincent’s Project for the Homeless, a local charity providing care packages to those facing homelessness. This comes after St Stephen’s School students selected Vincent’s Project as a worthy charity to receive a whopping $16,000 donation from WA Charity Direct. It’s great to see so many like-minded individuals from our community joining forces to support a good cause.

Helping Hands

Our Year 10 students have been getting creative out and about in the community, participating in two days of Service Learning. One group of students have teamed up with Women’s Refuge in the northern suburbs to screen print t-shirts for ‘mums and bubs’. The design was created by one of the mums and was both screen printed and hand painted onto the t-shirts.

Clever Creation

Charis House have taken modern art to the next level, recreating a famous artwork while tackling a major environmental issue – pollution. The ‘Mona Litter’ made out of recycled plastic bags, meat trays and plastic bottle caps is a result of the joint effort from students past and present. The inventive artwork will take pride of place in Charis House.
