This sporting life: St Stephen’s School equipping students with tools to become stars of the future

St Stephen’s School students are working on becoming the sporting stars of the future. Aspiring athletes from the school’s Carramar camp tested their balance, flexibility, strength and agility at the launch of the Athlete Development Program last week. More than 25 students from years 7 and 8 were selected for the new program, with sporting backgrounds ranging from soccer, gymnastics, Aussie rules football, netball and athletics.

Their initial session included a functional movement screening with program partners, Athletic Institute, where they were put through a series of activities and measurements to form a tailored movement plan according to their individual needs, goals and capabilities. Head of health and physical education, Craig Thomas said the program would equip students with skills to support them in their chosen sport and further in the sporting industry.

“The program is unique in that it does not focus on one particular sport but instead aims to provide training and education that will complement each student’s sports training program,” he said.

He said the program’s aims included enhancing knowledge of what drives performance, physical literacy, specialised training in areas of physiology and sports psychology and how to achieve a balance between demanding training schedules and success at school.

“The course focuses on movement principles and wellbeing. Over the course of the year, students will have the opportunity to experience sessions that consolidate crucial functional movement skills, explore healthy nutrition, engage in mental skills training and increase their speed and agility,” he said.

Year 8 & 9 Girls AFL Dockers Cup

Thursday 7 September,  20 girls from Year 8 & 9 competed in the West Perth District Dockers Cup for girls.  For the majority of the girls, this was the first time that they have played in any structured AFL competition.  Playing in Division B, the girls easily accounted for their rivals in the early rounds before facing some strong opposition from Mater Dei in the final round.  With a late goal, the girls were able to escape with a narrow win and go through to the round robin phase undefeated.  The grand final would see the girls play a rematch against Mater Dei and the game was similar to the earlier game.  Kicking with the breeze first, the girls were unable to take their chances but with a goal just before half time they had a narrow lead at the half time break.  Both sides were evenly matched in the first half,  but our girls eventually gained a two goal advantage into the breeze and were able to hold on until the final siren.  Although there was a minor mix up at the presentations the girls were able to collect the Free Dockers Shield as undefeated champions. Brooke Hurst received the award for best St Stephens player over the day, although all of the girls contributed to the wonderful result.

Congratulations and well done girls!

Basketball

Year 7,8 and 9 students from Carramar competed in the Alkimos and Beach division basketball carnival and our girls team have progressed into the northern suburbs championships!

Well done to all those who competed.

Year 9 Junior Boys AFL

With the last round of the qualifying stages being played this Thursday the Junior Boys Football team have had some mixed results.  We started off our first round game with a great come from behind win against Joseph Banks only to lose the next four games at home.  Facing Wanneroo Secondary College’s second side, the team was looking for a stronger performance after a poor showing against Irene McCormack the week before.  The first minute set the tone of the game with a strong forward entry and a couple of near misses before finally scoring a goal.  The remainder of the game was a one way street with the final score of 10.14 – 74 to 0 a reflection of our dominance across the ground.

This week sees our last game on Thursday against Butler away.  Many thanks to all of the parents who have come down and supported the boys through out the competition.

High Achievement in Sport – Daniel Vlahov

St Stephen’s Carramar student, Daniel Vlahov set to debut for Wolves…

The Joondalup Wolves will debut a St Stephen’s School student with a famous basketball name when the side faces East Perth in the State Basketball League on Saturday 17 June.

At 16, Daniel Vlahov, who is a relative of Perth wildcats great Andrew Vlahov, will be one of the youngest debutants in recent seasons. Daniel impressed coaching staff who invited the shooting guard to train with the senior squad at the end of last year.

Joondalup coach, Ben Ettridge said the St Stephen’s School student, who has been with the Wanneroo Basketball Association since childhood, had made the most of his opportunities in pre-season training and practise. “As a lightening quick, sharp shooting point guard, we gave him the appropriate time and opportunity to focus on his under 18 WA state commitments this year.” Daniel’s Division 1 performance under Coach Doug Gates have culminated in his promotion to the senior squad.

Wolves chief executive, Cameron Britt said Vlahov’s achievement to “break into this star-studded Wolves line-up at 16 years of age, speaks volumes for both his ability and his attitude”.

Daniel will also represent WA in the 2017 under 18’s Basketball team, competing in the Canberra National Championships, 11 – 18 August.
