Fighting Hunger Together

June 1, 2018

Each fortnight, St Stephen’s School students and staff take two trips into the city to volunteer for the UnitingCare West Food Rescue. After our volunteers collect food from participating cafes around the city, it is distributed to feed members of six UnitingCare West Services such as Tranby Centre each night. Aligning with the School’s motto to ‘Serve God, Serve One Another’, our whole School community are on the roster for the Food Rescue runs, with Principal Mrs Donella Beare recently teaming up with Service Learning Coordinator Donna Lund to gather the goods. UnitingCare West Food Rescue feeds around 11,500 people experiencing homelessness each week.

Food Rescue – T6 Service Learning

November 17, 2017

Mrs. Billingsley plus two Year 8 students,  Emma Baker and Amy Harrison, went to the CBD, St George’s Terrace on Wednesday. They participated in a ‘food rescue’ program run by Uniting Care West. They picked up a food cart, going from café to café collecting up leftover food.

Food Rescue saves surplus perishable, nutritious food that would otherwise find its way into landfill and redistribute to those in need.

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” – Proverbs 3:27

A record number of food was collected for Food Rescue last week by our Service Learning Coordinator Donna Lund.

Donna takes a food cart around to cafes and restaurants around Perth CBD and collects left over food for the homeless.

Who is Food Rescue…

Food Rescue is a UnitingCare West program feeding disadvantaged people in Western Australia. It aims to alleviate hunger by rescuing perishable, fresh and nutritious food from cafes, caterers, supermarkets and wholesalers and delivering it to disadvantaged, vulnerable people.

The program assists a variety of people in need including people experiencing homelessness, women and children in crisis, vulnerable young people, indigenous communities, elderly people, refugees and new arrivals and families on low incomes.

Food Rescue relies on the support of public donations, corporate funding and the dedication of volunteers.

‘Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.’ – Isaiah 58:7
