Impressive initiative in science and mathematics

September 18, 2020

Thomas McIntyre (pictured on left) watched a video on statistics in his spare time and decided to do some field testing in the school to verify the findings of the video. The premise is below;

“In the jelly-bean guessing game, participants either guess too high or too low and in roughly equal proportion and to about the same degree of inaccuracy. The individual will usually guess incorrectly, however if a large enough group is sampled and their average guess is taken, the average guess approaches the actual number of beans, even if everybody in the sample group has guessed incorrectly.”

Thomas wanted to test this theory, so he took a jar of M&M’s to the quad during lunch with a few tables and an assistant and surveyed around 100 participants to guess the number of M&M’s in the jar. The jury is still out on whether the theory holds true, but I think the fact that he has gone to all this effort, independently and without prompting, to verify the reliability of a theory on statistics which he read about in his spare time is a great testament to his ambition and promise as a scientist/mathematician.

Ben Lyons (pictured on right) helped Thomas out on the day processing data.

Numero Challenge

August 17, 2020

This year, our school entered our first Secondary Interschool Numero Challenge. Numero is a mathematics card game that involves mental arithmetic and fun! Our school entered 16 people with a total of four teams from Years 7-10. Some of these students had played Numero before but for many of them, they had only played Numero for 4 weeks or even less! The North Heats were held at St Stephen’s School, Carramar and our students had a lot of fun. There were individual and team challenges, some of which our teams placed in the top three for these events.

One of our teams placed 4th in the North Heats and were invited to attend the Grand Final the following week. The team consisting of: Josh Craig, Alyssa Hardingham, Ben Lyon and Thomas McIntyre were very excited to be competing in the Grand Final for their first ever Numero competition! We were up against schools from the north and south heats and some of these schools had won the Numero competition numerous times. Our students competed very well and finished in 8th place out of twelve schools.

MATH MASTERS

March 18, 2020

Last Friday night saw teams made up of Carramar and Duncraig Year 11 and 12 students battle it out at the Have Sum Fun mathematics competition. Great fun was had by all with some very challenging questions and problem solving involved!

Pi Day

March 13, 2020

The Yr 8 students are completing activities on Friday in their maths lessons in way of celebration of International Pi Day.

Please join us in celebrating by completing this Pi Day Sudoku, each row, column and region must contain the numbers 1-9, and three pi symbols.

Year 7 Maths Pathway Information Session

March 13, 2020

We will be holding a Parent Information Session at the school on 26th March at 5.30pm, where we will discuss your child’s mathematics learning in further detail and answer any questions that you might have. We will also show you how to log in to Maths Pathway and how to use the data in the Parent Portal to check in on your child’s progress and discuss how you can support your child in their mathematics learning.

Details for this event are as follows:

Date: 26th March 2020

Time: 5.30pm – 6.30pm

Location: Glenda Parkin Building (Yr 7 Building)

Recommended: Please bring your child and their device with you so that you can log in to the Parent Portal on our school network during the event.

We look forward to see you there,

Potato Olympics 2019

December 5, 2019

Have you ever wondered: Can smaller potatoes be flung further? Are rounder potatoes better at rolling? Do lighter potatoes create less splash?

These questions and more were investigated on Tuesday afternoon, which saw the Year 7 students participate in the Potato Olympics. The triumphant return of the Potato Olympics to the Duncraig campus saw potatoes being flung, rolled, bowled and dropped – all in the name of maths! Pure spud power was used to collect authentic data and determine which potato athlete and country would fry the competition.

TOP MARKS

November 28, 2019

St Stephen’s students have dominated on the national mathematics stage recently! Thomas McIntyre, Benjamin Lyon and Ethan Abraham achieved in the top 10% in Australia while Kari Whitelock, Brianna Aldersea and Remy Rowse achieved in the top 20% in Australia in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads. Well done!

Australasian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad

November 21, 2016

In the last academic year, 16 students from Yr 7 and 8 were selected to participate in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad. These students completed five challenges in five months, and spent time with Mathematics teachers practicing their problem solving skills in the buildup to each challenge. These students, pictured above, recently received their certificates. Alice Ward was awarded the trophy for the highest score in the SSS team as well as the Special Achievement award for the greatest improvement. Alice Ward, Connor Mann and Callum Stephens were also awarded patches as their scores were in the top 25% of all participants in Division S. 20161114_112632
