Water on Tap

June 21, 2018

After hearing from their peers that a chilled water fountain would be an ideal addition to the Library, the Year 12 School Captains decided to collaborate with the School Finance Department and Property Services to put a plan into action. A group of 25 Year 12s took it upon themselves to conduct some Saturday morning garden work at School, with a new water fountain then being installed as a gesture of thanks!

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9

Library Lifeline

November 24, 2017

With the increased reliance on devices, it is more important than ever for us to offer charging amenities for our students. Devices like laptops, iPads and phones have become important educational tools that facilitate a productive learning environment. As the popularity of such devices continues to grow, keeping a device charged can be an issue. A dead battery limits student productivity.

The Secondary Library has installed a Charging Station with a multitude of different chargers.  Charging stations are fixed units that feature separate locking compartments where a student can leave their device to charge safely.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” – Thessalonians 5:11

Tables as Whiteboards

November 15, 2017

Students love our whiteboard tables, and use them in all kinds of ways.  They are perfect for problem solving.  Before beginning writing tasks, students can quickly draw a mind map of ideas, then get to work.

Working on the table means it is easy to share thinking and ideas which spurs conversations. Using the whiteboard tables encourages students to be creative. Students who are reluctant to begin pen and paper tasks don’t seem to have that hesitation with the dry erase pens.

Pictured below are some Year 11 Marine and Maritime students using the table.

Tour Morning

October 26, 2017

Selecting a school is a major decision. It is less about predicting the sort of person your child will become and more about providing them with a diverse range of possibilities which will enable them to experience success within a safe and secure learning community.

To develop an understanding of St Stephen’s, we warmly encourage families to attend one of our Tour Mornings. These mornings give families the opportunity to see the School ‘in action’. Many families comment that these tours have allowed them to experience the intangible qualities of St Stephen’s educational offering, beginning a valuable and long-lasting partnership between home and school.

Families are welcome to attend both the Primary Campus, and Secondary Campus. Prospective students are very welcome to attend with their parents or guardians. Places at these Open Mornings are limited, so bookings are essential.

Even though the weather was wild and windy it didn’t stop perspective families coming along. Parents were greeted by Principal Donella Beare and Registrar Gayle Pieterse, School Executive were introduced followed by a short briefing from the Primary School Head, Mrs Tracey Gray, and then Head of Secondary, Mr Bruce Titlestad.

This was followed by a walking tour of the campus, concluding with morning tea. Our Registrar and other key staff members were available to answer any specific questions the families may have.

Tucker’s first day at school

October 18, 2017

Mrs Mills Year 8’s were joined by Tucker today in their reading lesson. It was his first day at school but he is no stranger to fame Tucker has appeared in an RAC television commercial, We’ll do the right thing, where he is covered in yellow paint!

Dogs can be clever creatures: many respond to a variety of commands, and some perform fun tricks, but even the cleverest canines can’t read. Instead they are a loving listeners.

I think we will be seeing a lot more of Tucker over the coming term.

“In His hand is the life of every creature…” – Job 12:10

Writing on surfaces

September 12, 2017

Writing on surfaces is one of those effective learning practices that is spreading with a viral rapidity. Schools do it because it works, and it works well.

Student’s love to write on desks, walls, doors, windows, etc. – not because it is naughty, but for the collaborative nature, the exchanges between writers, the rich colour, the personalisation, and more.

Working in full view immediately has a basis for conversation and discussion, offers an awareness of each other’s work, and has impact.

There is a strong cognitive reason. We’ve known for a long time that memory is aided by the cues and clues of social context.

Pedagogically, it works too.
