Service Learning at Neil Hawkins Park

August 15, 2019

Today the T2 home room went on a service learning trip to Neil Hawkins Park to work with Kevin McCloud from the Friends of Yellagonga (FOY). The task was to rehabilitate a section of the parklands around the lake. The FOY in a community based organisation who aim is to protect and rehabilitate the local wetland. The students were able to assist in this by planting many native species back into a degraded section of the park. We were grateful to Kevin and the FOY in enabling the students to have this service learning opportunity and we hope that the students gained some confidence to know that they have the capacity to help our communities no matter what age they are and that the experience will help them engage more easily with a service mindset. The FoY have a face book page (friends of yellagonga regional park inc)  and you can join the group to find about their activities, it’s a great family opportunity to help out in our local community.”

Service Learning Timean Style

A big thanks to Kevin McCloud for allowing us to work with him in spending some time weeding and planting at Bindaree park, one of the many local wetland regions that the FoY are involved in.

It is hoped that the students can build a connection with their local environment and become involved in serving community organisations such as FoY, leading the way for other students to get involved in supporting their local environment.

Environmental Rehabilitation featuring T2

June 16, 2017

On Wednesday T2 homeroom went on a trip to provide a service to the environment. Students who participate in community-based service-learning enjoy a number of benefits. One benefit of service-learning is that young people are far more likely to remain engaged when they can see that their participation is effecting change. This helps them to realize that they are able to make useful contributions to society through service and social action.

This outing to improve our environment was headed by Mr Biddle and Ms Robert.
