Dear Families,

As we draw near the end of another wonderful year at St Stephen’s School, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for the support, encouragement, and partnership you have shown throughout 2025.

Your ongoing commitment to our students and community has been invaluable. It has played a significant role in the many achievements and moments of growth we have celebrated together this year.

Reflecting on 2025, it has been exciting to witness a blend of treasured traditions alongside many new initiatives and ‘firsts’. This balance reflects the continual evolution of our school while remaining grounded in the values and identity that have shaped our strong foundation.

With warmest wishes and sincere appreciation.

Hannah Lockwood-Jones & Andrew Johnston

Free Dress Day

On Thursday, students will have a non-uniform day, this is the second last day of term. As we have already completed our fundraising for BACA “Kids in Care” and the Uniting WA collection this term, there will be no gold coin donation on this day. Please ensure that students wear clothing that is suitable for activities where they may get a little dirty, as they will be clearing out their belongings and enjoying some fun activities in the morning.

Colour Run (Year 6)

On the final day of school, the Year 6 students will participate in a Colour Run.  Students may want to bring/wear a white shirt for this event.

Staffing update

We are writing to let you know that Eryn-May Wicks will be leaving St Stephen’s School at the end of this term as she takes up a new K–12 role in another school. Miss Wicks has served the St Stephen’s community as the Biblical Studies Teacher for the last 2 years and, in that time, has served the school community with care and dedication.

After a rigorous recruitment campaign, we are delighted to announce that Teagan Dempers will be replacing Miss Wicks as the Biblical Studies Teacher. Miss Dempers is a highly passionate teacher and comes with experience leading worship and junior church in the church she attends.

Over the next week, Miss Dempers will be meeting with Miss Wicks and other Biblical Studies teachers throughout St Stephen’s School to support her in preparing for the year ahead.

We are thankful for Miss Wicks’ contribution to St Stephen’s and the way she has supported our students in their understanding of the Bible and the life of Jesus. Please join us in wishing her every blessing as she takes this next step in her professional journey.

Wheelchairs for Kids

This afternoon, in 3-6 worship, we welcomed a representative from Wheelchairs for Kids, the charity we raised money for in our free dress day at the end of last term.

It was wonderful to be able to present them with a cheque for $750, not only from the money raised through free dress, but also from some extremely generous additional donations from some parents.

Thank you to all who supported this cause.

One More for Dinner

Message of thanks from the Spiers Centre

For some people, cooking is a passion; for others, it’s more of a chore. Whatever camp you fall into, everyone who rolled up their sleeves to cook meals for The Spiers Centre has made an extraordinary difference and for those whose batteries aren’t recharged by time in the kitchen, we send you an extra virtual hug of gratitude. I’d love to share a little about where those meals go, and the lives they touch.

The Spiers Centre has been serving people across Perth’s northern suburbs for just over 45 years. Today, our work includes financial counselling for people in financial stress, often on the brink of eviction, with around 40% of our clients also surviving family and domestic violence. We provide emergency relief in the form of food hampers, food vouchers, utility support, and advocacy – connecting people to the right help at the right time. The meals you prepare for us are a vital part of that emergency relief, and the best way to show their impact is through a real story from earlier today.

The Centre had barely opened its doors when a young man came in. He was humble, polite, and almost apologetic for “bothering us.” He told our staff how his entire life, from birth had been lived amongst the chaos of substance use and instability, but in the past two months he’d made a conscious decision to break away. He’s been sleeping rough for 56 nights, scraping together enough money for the occasional cheap hotel room when he could. Despite reaching out to several agencies, he’d been told housing could be years away. He was deflated, tired, and hungry, yet still hesitant to take help because he believed there were “others worse off or more deserving.”

When we offered him a food hamper, he asked quietly, “Do I have to pay for it?”  and the surprise and relief when he realised it was freely given said everything. Because of you, we could go one step further: we offered him one of the St Stephen’s meals. You could see the shift in him, that moment when someone is treated with dignity, not pity. When he’s seen as a fellow human being not a problem to be solved or passed on. We gave him choices, amongst which were: baked chicken meatball fettuccine or Mexican cheesy beef and rice? We could heat one up for now, and pack another to take away. Maybe some onigiri too. It can be eaten hot or cold, perfect for when there’s no way to cook.

He left with a brown paper bag full of food, a full stomach, and a sense that he mattered. He knew he could come back again, because people like you care enough to make sure no one leaves our doors hungry.

Your meals do more than feed people; they restore hope, dignity and humanity.

From all of us at The Spiers Centre, thank you, St Stephen’s families, for being the heart behind every meal.

Warm regards

Andrew Johnston & Hannah Lockwood-Jones

One More for Dinner

Our School Community, Serving Our Local Community

This term, we invite our ELC families to take part in a simple but powerful act of kindness. When you prepare a meal for your family in Week 3 of this term,  consider making a little extra “One More for Dinner”  to support someone in our local community.

How it works:

·         Containers are available now from ELC reception, or from a box outside during after school pickup.

·         During Week 3 (Monday 27 October – Thursday 30 October) cook an extra portion of your family meal.

·         Place it in the microwave-safe container you collected from the ELC.

·         Write out the ingredients clearly on the label on the container.

·         Drop it off at ELC reception any day of Week 3. The last drop off for food is Friday 31 October, 8:30 am.

·         Over the course of the week, meals will be collected and distributed to those in need.

Important:

·         Meals must be easy to reheat in a microwave.

·         Please ensure ingredients and the date you made the meal are listed on the label, this will help support dietary needs and preferences, .

·         Once you have filled your container, please bring it to the ELC the next morning. This will ensure that it remains fresh for those receiving the meal.

Thank you for helping us show care and compassion to our wider community. Together, we can make a difference, one meal at a time.

Magpie Swooping at the ELC

If you or your child has experienced any incidents of magpie swooping in the school environment, we kindly ask that you email the Joondalup Council at info@joondalup.wa.gov.au

We are seeking action from the council to reduce magpie activity around the school, and it will be very helpful if they also hear from families.

Thank you for your support.

Welcome to Term 4! We hope you had a relaxing break and are returning with renewed energy for what promises to be an engaging and memorable end to the school year. It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the final term of 2025, but there’s still so much to look forward to.

This term is filled with meaningful opportunities to celebrate your children’s development and successes. A standout event will be our Primary Presentation Night—a special evening to recognise each child’s progress and achievements. We’ll be sharing more information about this in the coming weeks.

Another exciting part of the term is Orientation Day, when students will spend time in their new classrooms for next year. This experience plays an important role in helping them feel confident and prepared as they take their next steps in learning.

Cards that Count

St Stephens Primary School is once again taking part in United WA’s Fundraising Appeal “Cards that Count”, a school fundraising initiative that transforms student artwork into beautiful, professionally printed greeting cards, tea towels, tote bags and more.  Each purchase helps support people who are at risk or experiencing homelessness.

United WA has partnered with Crazy Camel to streamline the ordering process. Students have completed their art templates in class, and their designs are now available for ordering at: www.crazycamel.com.au/36686

Online ordering will be open from Wednesday 15th October – Wednesday 29th October. Completed orders will be distributed to students by their class teachers in early November.

  • From next week (Monday 20 October – Friday 24 October) you can collect a container from the ELC reception at any time, or from a box outside during after school pickup.
  • During Week 3 (Monday 27 October – Thursday 30 October) cook an extra portion of your family meal.
  • Place it in the microwave-safe container you collected from the ELC.
  • Write out the ingredients clearly on the label on the container.
  • Drop it off at ELC reception any day of Week 3. The last drop off for food is Friday 31 October, 8:30 am.
  • Over the course of the week, meals will be collected and distributed to those in need.

Important:

  • Meals must be easy to reheat in a microwave.
  • Please ensure ingredients and the date you made the meal are listed on the label, this will help support dietary needs and preferences, .
  • Once you have filled your container, please bring it to the ELC the next morning. This will ensure that it remains fresh for those receiving the meal.

Thank you for helping us show care and compassion to our wider community. Together, we can make a difference, one meal at a time.

Uniform

Can we please ask that you refresh your understanding of the uniform guide to ensure that your children come to school with the correct uniform. As we approach the coming year it is important that you review the uniform guide to ensure that purchases align with the school uniform expectations Primary School Uniform

As always, we are here to support you and your children throughout the term. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, feedback, or concerns.

Looking forward to a wonderful Term 4 filled with learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

Warm regards

Andrew Johnston & Hannah Lockwood-Jones

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we come to the close of another busy and vibrant term, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for all of your support. The partnership between home and school is such a vital part of what we do, and it has been wonderful to share so many memorable learning experiences with your children this term.

This week our Early Learning Centre students came together for our “Big Cook Up”, preparing meals for families in need within our local community. It was inspiring to see each year group contributing in their own special way:

  • Year 2 prepared jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings
  • Year 1 cooked hearty spaghetti bolognese
  • Pre-Primary made delicious Mars Bar slice
  • Kindergarten designed and decorated their own hot chocolate cups filled with hot chocolate powder, ready to be enjoyed with some hot water.

What made this event even more special was the chance to use fresh produce from our very own ELC garden in the meal preparation, a wonderful reminder of how our children’s learning connects with real-life experiences and service to others. A huge well done to all the students and staff involved in this effort to support those in our wider community.

A special thanks also to our Year 1 and Year 3 teams for the fantastic camps they organised last week. These were filled with fun and provided children with opportunities to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Class Placement 2026

As we prepare for next year, we would like to take the opportunity to inform you of the process we use when placing students in their classes for next year. Please note that all teachers place students after examination of several factors which include:

  • Social and emotional concerns
  • Friendship preferences
  • Academic ability
  • Staff observations

Your child’s current class teachers construct their class lists in collaboration with their partner year group teacher(s), Learning Assistants and Specialist Teachers. Where possible, the teaching staff will provide experiences for students to interact across the classes to also observe student interactions with students not currently in their class.

Once the teachers have completed their class list recommendations, they are forwarded on to the Primary Leadership Team to be reviewed.

The process of creating class lists is done carefully and over a period of time. Please be assured that every decision we make is in the best interests of your child and understand that, while we recognise the uniqueness and preferences of each student, we will not guarantee a preferred placement.

Please, can we encourage you to trust in the professionalism and dedication of our staff as they consider the many factors in placing your child in a particular class and not make requests for preferred class placements for your child.

You will be notified of your child’s teacher in January 2026 before they commence school.

As always, thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. We wish you a restful and safe term break, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the new term ahead.

Warmest regards,

Hannah Lockwood-Jones & Andrew Johnston
