Year 12 ATAR Visit

August 15, 2019

The Year 12 ATAR Biology students from Duncraig visited UWA and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Science this term. They investigated nanotechnology learning how it can make cancer cells self-destruct, forensic anthropology to produce evidence that could be used in court and used biotechnology to identify disease. It was an amazing two days that gave students insight into the real application of their course to improve society.

Service Learning at Neil Hawkins Park

August 15, 2019

Today the T2 home room went on a service learning trip to Neil Hawkins Park to work with Kevin McCloud from the Friends of Yellagonga (FOY). The task was to rehabilitate a section of the parklands around the lake. The FOY in a community based organisation who aim is to protect and rehabilitate the local wetland. The students were able to assist in this by planting many native species back into a degraded section of the park. We were grateful to Kevin and the FOY in enabling the students to have this service learning opportunity and we hope that the students gained some confidence to know that they have the capacity to help our communities no matter what age they are and that the experience will help them engage more easily with a service mindset. The FoY have a face book page (friends of yellagonga regional park inc)  and you can join the group to find about their activities, it’s a great family opportunity to help out in our local community.”

HELPING HAND

August 11, 2019

UnitingCare West’s Tranby Centre has been open 24-hours-a-day this week for Homelessness Week. Two groups of St Stephen’s staff prepared lasagne, garlic bread and bread-and-butter pudding for around 100 people in need. They enjoyed chatting and getting to know the individuals and hearing about their journeys – what a wonderful way to give back.
