Connect Team

June 28, 2017

This is the Connect Team that is full of students who have a passion for technology. Members of the Connect Team come to the library each week on a Wednesday lunchtime to participate in such activities as designing websites and developing Media skills. The group was created by Year 8 student Jayden Bray and has some fabulous students in it.

Augmented Reality Sandbox

June 3, 2017

Many of us remember the time of our childhood that we spent on the beach messing around with sand, creating castles, water channels or sculptures.

Sandbox is a complex system that uses Kinect with a combination of projector and specialized software written especially for this system.

Using plastic shovel you can remove or add sand and then using you hands you can add “water” to the part of the box you want. Thereafter system immediately fills your channel or lakes with “water”. You can also paint a hill in dark-brown color exactly we see on the special geographical map.

But SAR was not created as just a simple toy for kids. This is a complex system that was created for serious scientific experiments, and can be very useful in creating and examining different geographic, geologic and hydrological models.

The Augmented Reality Sandbox was developed by the UC Davis W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES, http://www.keckcaves.org), supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. DRL 1114663.

Barbagello Raceway Visit

May 8, 2017

On Friday 05/05/2017 the year 11 and 12 Automotive Engineering and Technology student visited Barbagello Raceway to watch the Supercars and other classifications practice for Sunday’s racing. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to see behind the scenes of the requirements to race on the day.

Aside from the Supercars, the class favorites were the stadium trucks and the drift cars. The drivers and the Club Presidents were very generous with time for the students, which was greatly appreciated.

Another highlight was the availability of pit lane, where the public can visit and see how much work goes into the setting up of the cars. This is closed on the Saturday and Sunday.

A big thanks to Russell Sewell, who made the day possible, which has inspired the students.

Year 10 Girls attend Robogals Workshop

February 23, 2017

Today the Year 10 girls had the opportunity to attend a LEGO Robtotics workshop run by a group of university student volunteers arranged by Mrs Amy Aldous.

In this fun and educational class, students were shown the basics of engineering, robotics and programming using LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits.

The photo below shows students being a human structure.

The purpose of these workshops is to give girls a general idea of what engineering is about and to provide a fun, hands-on engineering experience. The workshops are free for schools and run by volunteers from UWA.

You may have noticed the incredible new table that is now part of Student Services reception. This table was designed and built by Kiara Chappell. She says that the inspiration was her love for timber and her passion for helping others. The quote is all about the important life skills that we can learn from the environment. The proceeds of the table have been donated to a baby clinic in Mozambique.
