Indonesian Consulate Visit

September 12, 2017

On Friday the 8th of September the year 8 students currently studying Indonesian had the opportunity to visit the Indonesian Consulate in East Perth. They participated in a number of workshops including learning to play traditional Gamelan instruments and learnt Indonesian dance from the island of Sumatera. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience the richness of Indonesian culture and apply the language they have been learning at school in the Indonesian community.

Celebrating Sporting Achievements

September 5, 2017

Duncraig celebrated student sports achievements today in the gym.

Principal Donella Beare and guest speaker Brad Ness presented awards, colours and certificates.

The students enjoyed the talk by Paralympic Brad Ness.

Brad was a sports-mad teenager who excelled in swimming, tennis, hurdles and his favourite code, AFL. As a teenager, he worked as a deckhand aboard a high-speed ferry between Rottnest Island and Fremantle, before losing his leg when he was 18.  Australia chose Brad to be the flag bearer for the 2016 Rio Paralympics opening ceremony. Brad made his Paralympic debut at Sydney 2000 as the Rollers missed the medals, but has been part of remarkable success with the team ever since. A silver medal at Athens 2004 was followed by gold in Beijing four years later, with London 2012 bringing about another silver.

Mr Titlestad, Head of Secondary, closed the assembly with a prayer.

Guests, awardees and parents were then invited to the Community Room for a morning tea.

Year 12 ClassPad Presentation

September 1, 2017

About 75 mathematics students from Year 12 attended a ‘masterclass’ on the Computer Algebra System (CAS) calculator Thursday. This was presented by national Casio ClassPad 330 expert Charlie Watson.

Charlie’s sessions included trigonometry, functions, probability, sequences and graphing. He looked at basic skills and past exam paper questions and how to simplify them by using the classpad.

The students found it extremely useful and were impressed at Charlie’s presentation skills.

This presentation was organised by Jennifer Prosser, Acting HOLA Mathematics.

Spray-On-Skin Presentation

August 16, 2017

The Year 12 students were treated to a two-hour presentation on Spray-On-Skin by the renowned Professor Fiona Wood today.

Professor Wood’s greatest contribution and enduring legacy is her work pioneering the innovative ‘spray-on skin’ technique (Recell), which greatly reduces permanent scarring in burns victims. Professor Wood patented her method in 1993 and today the technique is used worldwide.

Spray-on skin is a patented skin culturing treatment for burn victims, developed by scientist Marie Stoner and plastic surgeon Dr Fiona Wood. Professor Wood’s treatment is under ongoing development.

Thanks to our innovative technology Carramar Year 12 students could watch the presentation live using our extended classrooms.

WORK EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE LEARNING

July 1, 2017

I have enjoyed being able to visit many of our Year Ten students as they have participated in Work and Service Learning this week. Every one of our students told me how they were enjoying their time in the workplace or service learning, and many said this had helped them make decisions about their career path. One of the very special elements of the week were the past students who I encountered along the way. Their positive feedback about the long term impact of our school community were delightful to hear. There are also a number of our parents supporting this week and I thank all of you for the support you have given to the Year Ten cohort. The week was obviously of great value to the students. A special thank you to Cathy Trethowen who coordinated the challenging logistics of the week so successfully.

My best wishes for a relaxing and peaceful term break.

Dr Liz Criddle

Deputy Head of Secondary.
