CAPTAINS ASSEMBLE

October 16, 2020
The sun was shining for the whole school assembly this morning where the Captains for 2021 were announced, the groups proudly standing at the front of their cohort, excited to lead their Houses in the new year.
Congratulations also to students who were presented with awards this morning, following the Alliance Française Examination earlier this year. Special mention to Camille Tessier who got the highest mark in WA for Year 9 background speaker of French in the Alliance Francaise 2020 examinations.

THEY’RE BACK!

February 10, 2020

Last  week, we commissioned our new Year 12s and School Captains, we also welcomed back students from the Class of 2019 who achieved an ATAR score over 90 in their WACE Exams. Our alumni were kind enough to offer their peers some words of wisdom as they continue through their high school years.

RECONCILIATION WEEK

May 29, 2019

As the St Stephen’s School community recognises National Reconciliation Week, our students have been learning about the history between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The discussions in class and as a whole school have provided opportunities to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

WORDS OF WISDOM

February 8, 2019

This week we welcomed back some of our Class of 2018 students!

At the whole school assembly, the new members of the 90s Club (top scoring ATAR students) passed on their advice to our current students, giving them a spark of inspiration as they begin to navigate another school year.

Excellence

January 31, 2018

In this week’s whole school assembly, we congratulated 2017 students who achieved great results in their chosen pathways, and congratulated current students in other areas of achievement in our school. I spoke about an Australian who has been recognised for their personal (and team) excellence, Professor Michelle Simmons our Australian of the Year. I talked about how Prof. Simmons thought at a young age about all the things that people didn’t really expect her to be able to do. When she surprised other people, she started thinking: ‘there must be other things that people don’t expect of me, let me find out what they are’. I asked our school community what you might be able to achieve, what difference you might be able to make in order to surprise me, surprise your teachers, and do the unexpected.

Other peoples expectations can be challenging, they can make us re-think our perspective.  My expectation for us all this year can be summed up in one word: Excellence. I want you to achieve excellence for yourself at school. I talked about deciding what excellence means for you. It could mean that you are giving your best, and that you are working out what you can achieve. It could mean – getting an extra three percent in a test, creating an object that has that little bit more of your creativity in it, working at a friendship that is not going so well….. Achievement is different for all of us.

We celebrated Year 12 students who have all taken completely different pathways after leaving school. All needed to have their own understanding of excellence and the belief that they could achieve the unexpected. Your pathway is uniquely yours, and your idea of excellence is yours. I encourage you to start the year well, to support your peers and encourage them, and to keep excellence as your goal. Have an excellent year!

First Assembly of 2018

January 30, 2018

The first assembly of 2018 was held today in the gym. It was also the first assembly that the new Year 7 cohort has attended. The school band was in attendance which is always special.

A school assembly is a gathering of all or part of a secondary school for a variety of purposes, such as celebrating achievements, announcements, raise the roof with  singing, others are so quiet you can hear a pin drop but it is an ideal opportunity to communicate information on a regular basis.

Pictured below is Principal, Mrs. Donella Beare, Head of Secondary, Mr. Bruce Titlestad, and Deputy Head of Secondary, Dr. Liz Criddle.

Captain’s Commissioning Service

October 10, 2017

St Stephens Secondary Duncraig would like to congratulate our new School and House Captains.

To mark these appointments, we would like to welcome your to attend our Captain’s Commissioning Service on Monday 16th October at 10.05am in the Gym.

Celebrating Sporting Achievements

September 5, 2017

Duncraig celebrated student sports achievements today in the gym.

Principal Donella Beare and guest speaker Brad Ness presented awards, colours and certificates.

The students enjoyed the talk by Paralympic Brad Ness.

Brad was a sports-mad teenager who excelled in swimming, tennis, hurdles and his favourite code, AFL. As a teenager, he worked as a deckhand aboard a high-speed ferry between Rottnest Island and Fremantle, before losing his leg when he was 18.  Australia chose Brad to be the flag bearer for the 2016 Rio Paralympics opening ceremony. Brad made his Paralympic debut at Sydney 2000 as the Rollers missed the medals, but has been part of remarkable success with the team ever since. A silver medal at Athens 2004 was followed by gold in Beijing four years later, with London 2012 bringing about another silver.

Mr Titlestad, Head of Secondary, closed the assembly with a prayer.

Guests, awardees and parents were then invited to the Community Room for a morning tea.

Reconciliation Day Assembly

May 26, 2017

Each year National Reconciliation Week (NRW) celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

May 27 Marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.

3 June Commemorates the High Court of Australia’s landmark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—a relationship that existed prior to colonalisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title.

At the assembly today we had a visiting primary choir, Dryandra , who joined forces with the St Stephen’s primary choir to sing three songs.

We were treated to a display by students of Wesley College.

They performed traditional dances accompanied by the didgeridoo.

This wondelful assembly was co-ordinated by HASS teacher Matt Smith and HASS HOLA Leeanne Shanks.

A Rose By Any Other Name…

February 16, 2017

As part of the Alethea House assembly, Miss Arora and Mr Jakeway brought the iconic balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet to life. Because it was Valentine’s Day, the House assembly explored different kinds of love from romantic love (Romeo and Juliet) to love of God. The assembly concluded with a unique rendition of Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’ which was mimed by many staff members. A memorable assembly.
