HAVE SUM FUN MATHS COMPETITION

Recently, St Stephen’s School has had groups of maths students from years 7 to 12 competing in a quiz style maths competition at various schools across the local area.

They took part in teams of up to 6 answering 8 maths problems of varying difficulty over 4 rounds within a time frame of 20 minutes per round.

There were around 20-25 schools competing and the students represented themselves and the school fantastically well and seemed to really enjoy the evening.

The students were lucky enough to explore various exciting problems as well as developing their team working skills.

For those of you who would like an example of the questions then here you go:

Year 7 & 8

A car-wrecker counted 167 tyres on the cars in his yard. He found that not one car had a spare tyre and that 5 cars had at least one tyre missing. What is the greatest number of cars that he could possibly have in his yard?

Year 9 & 10

The head of a fish is 12cm long. The tail is as long as the head and half the length of the main body. The main body is as long as the head and tail together. How long is the fish?

Year 11 & 12

Barry has a drawer containing 12 black, 12 brown, 12 blue and 12 green socks which are not properly paired. He takes socks out of the drawer at random in the dark without replacing any. How many socks must he take out to be certain he has a matched pair in each of the four colours?

Commercial Design

The Year 9’s from Commercial Design recently went on an excursion to Paper Bird in Fremantle to meet with Illustrator Samantha Hughes.

Samantha Hughes writes and illustrates in a sunny studio in Fremantle with two naughty cats.

She works mainly in gouache, relishing the richness of colour and fine detail it allows.

Her work has appeared in books, on posters, in exhibitions and even on shoes.

Samantha worked with the students to help develop their ideas, skills and techniques for their Book Week poster design project.

The student’s were truly inspired.

Sculpture going to the Venice Biennale

Renowned WA artist Graham Hay visited St Stephen’s School today to put the finishing touches to some artwork he is making for the oldest and largest art exhibition in Venice, the Venice Biennale.

He is going to ship, exhibit and then give away his sculpture made up of ceramic porcelain flutes to 10,000 people at the 2017 Venice Biennale, for them to drink Prosecco out of, all while promoting WA artists to an international audience.

The porcelain flutes (pictured) will be engraved with more than 3000 WA artist’s web addresses and given out to promote WA.

What an amazing way to promote WA artists.

EXAMINATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS

Examinations and Externally Set Tasks

Wear your school uniform to all examinations. PE uniform is acceptable for written examinations in the exam period but it must be worn PERFECTLY. For practical examinations, check requirements with your teacher prior. The Externally Set Task is completed in school time, and so normal school uniform should be worn.

Bring your SmartRider Card, which will have your ID number, to all exams. Bring only the appropriate equipment, including spare pens, pencils, calculator and batteries. Ball point pens must be used, no gel pens. Equipment must be in a clear plastic bag, no pencil cases. Check requirements with your teachers prior to exams.

Be outside the examination room (or the classroom for an Externally Set Task) at least 20 minutes before the start time. Students will usually be let in before “reading time” actually starts. Enter the room in silence.

Check the seating plan, if there is one, so that you know which row to sit in.

Do not bring any unauthorised materials into the room. This includes mobile phones, smart watches and any other mobile technologies or unauthorised calculators.

You will be provided with only standard answer booklets (or paper if allowed), where you can do any planning work and these will be handed in. Rough work needs to be clearly labelled as such.

Follow instructions from the supervisor. Failure to adhere to the supervisor’s instructions can be a breach of exam rules.

In the case of a breach of the guidelines, penalties as outlined in the school Assessment Policy and the SCSA WACE Manual will be applied.

If you need to leave the room temporarily, please put your hand up and wait until a supervisor comes to speak to you.

Keep calm outside the examination room before entering. It is important that you are calm and that you allow others to be calm.

Should you become very unwell on the day of an examination or Externally Set Task, please phone Student Services on 9243 2101 and obtain a medical certificate. If at all possible, it is preferable that you come in and sit the assessment if you can.

ACC – A Division Swimming Carnival at HBF Stadium

The A Division Swimming Carnival took place Wednesday at HBF Stadium, Claremont.

It was a fantastic day at the ACC swimming carnival.

St Stephen’s finished third in A Division!

There were many amazing swims throughout the day.

A number of students stepped up and filled the gaps.

Students who attended represented SSS in a very fine fashion.

Beginnings of a Mural with special meaning

Year 10 students have being busy creating a mural to reflect the life of St. Stephen – our School’s namesake.

His life inspires our students to live a life of service to God and others.

ATAR Media Production

On the night of Wednesday the 15^th of March, the Year 12 Media students of St Stephen’s Duncraig headed to Innaloo Event Cinemas.

No, not to see the new Wolverine movie, but to watch some of the top ATAR Media films made by Western Australian Year 12 students in 2016.

The night was a huge success, with our students buzzing afterwards about the student films they had seen.

We hope it has not only inspired those students who attended, but will impact on the quality of the ATAR Media productions they create this year.

Careers Expo 2017

The combined campus Careers Expo was an outstanding success.

Such was the demand that exhibitors run out of handouts.

Worlds Greatest Shave hits Duncraig

Lunch on the Quad was a bit different today.

Kaelan Lindup had his head shaved by fellow students.

Kaelan locks were so long that they had to be cut with a pair of scissors first.

Kaelan has raised $1,250 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Donations are still being accepted.

This iconic event is one of Australia’s biggest fundraisers.

Year 8 students were first in line.

Bunnings Workshop

Everyone had a fantastic day today learning about the different types of tools and the safety when using these tools.

Student’s learnt quite a bit and these skills will certainly serve them well in their work at JJ Haven.

Our sincere thanks to Bunnings for their ongoing support of our South Africa Service Tour.

They continue to bless us with this free building workshop topped off with a lovely morning tea, a filling lunch and a great pair of working gloves and safety glasses.
