Year 12, 2017 – External WACE Examinations

Please remember if you are unwell and unable to attend your WACE exam, you must see a relevant medical specialist on the day of the exam and obtain a detailed medical certificate. This applies to each separate exam. You are responsible for sending your whole application to SCSA. A request for Sickness/ Misadventure is made by you to SCSA, and not through the school. You obtain the form from: http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au. It is always strongly recommended and preferable that you attend all exams, even if you are slightly unwell.

 

If you do not sit the examination for an ATAR course, then that course will be deemed by SCSA to be incomplete and will not be counted for ANY element of the WACE, nor will the pair of units for the Year 12 course appear on your WASSA (Statement of Attainment). This is also the case related to attendance and participation in courses with practical examinations (you need to sit both components). This has been previously explained to you in Education Plus. If you are unwell on the day of an exam, it is best to sit the exam and do your best, plus go to the doctor for a medical certificate and apply for Sickness and Misadventure.

 

Best wishes for your exams! Study Seminars are being held during the first week of this term so that your Mock Examinations can be returned to you and you can overview your course. Please email your class teacher or HOLA if you need to catch up during the study break to organise a meeting time.

Murdoch University Upcoming Student Events

  • A Day in the Life of a University Student – This free event invites Year 9 & 10 students to experience what life is like as a Murdoch University student during the Term3 school holidays. Students will choose from either Wednesday 27th September or Thursday 28th September to explore the campus, meet new friends and participate in hands-on workshops in subject areas of interest to them. Places are limited and students can register by visiting the website.
  • MESH at Murdoch awards – The MESH at Murdoch Awards recognises and rewards Year 10 and 11 high school students in Western Australia for excellence in areas of media. We are searching for outstanding submissions in Screen Production, Photography, Journalism, Creative Writing, Games Art, Graphic Design, Sound Production, Theatre and Drama, Radio, and Web Communication. Student submissions will go in to the running to win the coveted Golden Mesh trophy and a $500 gift voucher, courtesy of Murdoch’s School of Arts. Submissions are due 6 October 2017.   • On-Campus Visits – Term 4 is an excellent time to bring Year 10 & 11 students on campus to explore campus, courses and careers. Subject Confirmation and Booklist

Students in Year 7, 8, 9, and 11 will be receiving their subject confirmation for the five term 2018 academic year in Homeroom this week.

Students in Year 10 have already received this information.

Information on Booklist requirements will be emailed to families on Friday 1 September.

Murdoch University: Applications are now open for Semester 1 2018

August 28, 2017

If you know someone who wants to start university in 2018 and achieved an ATAR of 80.00 or above, they may be eligible for the Murdoch First Scholarship worth $2,000. And if they accomplished an ATAR of 90.00 or higher, they may be awarded with a $3,000 scholarship.

All they have to do is choose a Murdoch undergraduate course as their first preference through TISC and enrol full-time in Semester 1, 2018. Be sure that they get their preferences into TISC by 11pm on Friday 29 September to avoid a late application fee.

Important notice: National data collection on students with a disability

Dear Parents,

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on school students with disability (NCCD) provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students receiving adjustments because of disability in schools, and the adjustments they are provided to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students.

The Australian Education Regulation 2013, requires that all schools, provide information to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the Department) for the purposes of the NCCD.

The information that Schools must give to the Department includes, in relation to each student with a disability at a school:

  • the student’s level of education (i.e. primary or secondary)
  • the student’s category of disability (i.e. physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional)
  • the student’s level of adjustment (i.e. support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustment).

Year 10 & Year 11 2018

Dear Parents and Students

At the moment we are building the timetable for the next academic year (October 2017 to December 2018). It has been interesting and challenging to accommodate the changing desires of students. Subjects that didn’t exist in schools several years ago, such as ATAR Marine and Maritime Studies, Cert lll and lV in Business, Psychology etc. have grown in popularity while certain more “traditional” subjects have shrunk. Changes in the workplace are strongly influencing the subject choices that students and their families make.

Many Certificate classes (e.g. Certificate ll in Hospitality; Certificate lll in Design; Certificate ll in Sport and Recreation – Fitness; Cert ll in Outdoor Education) are chosen by both Year 11 and 12 students who enrol in a particular certificate depending on their needs. This mixture of students in Certificate Courses has been common for many years.

As we endeavour to keep other subject pathways open into the future, some very small Year 11 classes which have a significant practical or oral component do lend themselves to merging with small Year 12 classes. In 2018 fewer than 4 students have chosen ATAR French and this will be run in conjunction with the Year 12 class. The same will be true for Drama and Media. Students choosing these three subjects need to understand that they will be working with older students and that they will be required to work at a high and self-disciplined level.  I am pleased that there are still bigger numbers of students choosing subjects such as Economics, Modern History and Visual Art.

Our timetable is constructed “from the top down”: we start with Year 11 and 12 simultaneously. Initially student choices give us an indication of how many classes might be possible. We use a very advanced program to satisfy the needs of as many students as possible. Some subjects exist on one grid line only and this complicates things. Subjects such as ATAR English and Mathematics Applications are spread across as many “grid lines” as possible in order to create as many choices for students as we can. Decisions around the viability of classes are based on numbers, the historical number of students who drop particular subjects in favour of a private study in Year 12 as well as whether a subject is a university pre-requisite.

Over this last week of term, almost every prospective Year 11 and 12 student will finalise their subjects for upper school. While Year 11s chose 6 subjects, by the start of next year over 60% of year 12s on an ATAR pathway, will have only 5 subjects and will have a private study as their 6th “subject”. We are in the process of constructing the Year 9 and 10 “electives” gridlines and fitting those into the complicated matrix that makes up a timetable. This timetable will be in place until December 2018. After that timetables will be constructed later in the year and run from February to December each year.
