Year 10 Interviews

June 27, 2019

Dear Parents & Guardians

The Student-Parent-Teacher interviews for Year 10 students will be held on Monday 5 August from 4:00-8:00pm. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s progress and Semester 1 Report with their teachers. We encourage students to be present to participate in the interview.

The interviews will be held in the Glenda Parkin Learning Centre. Please note if for some reason a teacher is not available on the day their name will not be listed on the Bookings information, and you will receive an email from the teacher (or Head of Learning Area) to organise an alternative.  The bookings system will close on Wednesday 31 July.

To book your interview time please go to: www.ststephens.wa.edu.au. Then:

  • click on the Parent and Student Portal
  • under ‘Plan the Term’, click on Interview Bookings
  • log in and book your times

When booking interviews, you are welcome to book with as few or as many of your child’s teachers as you wish. A few teachers have so many classes they might be booked out for the entire evening. If this is the case and you wish to make an interview time, please email the teacher and let them know your available times for an in-person or telephone interview.

We look forward to seeing you on the evening.

Try-A-Trade

June 4, 2019

A group of Year 10 students tried their hands at plastering, tiling and bricklaying during the School’s recent Try-A-Trade program at the North Metropolitan TAFE’s Clarkson campus.

The students spent three days learning new skills, with plastering proving very popular – shown by the amount of plaster spread around – and groups enjoying the tiling and bricklaying opportunities as well.

Try-A-Trade is a short course to give students a chance to participate in a trade environment and experience what an apprenticeship may be like.

VET in Schools liaison officer Vicki O’Connor said it allows the students to have a better overview for subject selection at school as they can make an informed decision on the course of study they would like to follow.

“Students were totally engaged in each trade, displaying excellent skills and behaviour, prompting positive comments from the lecturers at North Metropolitan TAFE, and they represented our School in an extremely positive way,” Mrs O’Connor said.

“Parents were also very supportive with phone calls, emails and chats at your Careers Expo on the positive effect it had on their child as it had given them a direction for upper school studies.”

The VET Liaison Officers from both campuses were very impressed with the students’ “have-a-go” attitude and the questions asked about pathways into trades.

WARM WELCOME

May 30, 2019

Moving up to Secondary can be a bit daunting for some but the Year 7-10 Mentoring Program helps to welcome the newest recruits into the fold. Year 10 students recently spent time playing games with some of the Year 7s, helping to bridge the gap from Primary to Secondary, with Celebrity Heads, UNO and Two Truths and Lie offering lots of laughs. The groups meet twice a term to provide the younger students with a familiar and friendly face before they transition into their Houses in Year 8.

LEARNING TOGETHER

May 23, 2019

There’s nothing quite like a good story time at the ELC, especially when the Year 10s come to visit! Year 10 students recently created their own children’s picture books of the Bible to read to the Year 2s. The Year 2s were delighted to listen and share the knowledge they have learned in their own Biblical Studies class.

Year 10 Biblical Studies

May 20, 2019

In Year 10 Biblical Studies, students spend 12 weeks completing an overview of the Bible learning how the 66 books of the bible all point to Jesus Christ. A central part of this course has the students creating their own children’s picture book of the Bible. To celebrate the successful completion of their storybooks the Year 10s visited the Year 2s at the Early Learning Centre and read their books aloud to a small group of students. The Year 2s were delighted share their own knowledge about Jesus from the Bible Mr Stephens has been reading to them. It was a wonderful time for all involved.

Dancing the Day away!

May 8, 2019

Year 10 History students participated in the Charleston Dance lesson earlier in the term.  Yr 10 History covers Australia from the end of WW up to the Civil Rights movement.  It is important that students actively engage in Australian history and enjoyed learning a dance from the 1920s.  It is always impressive to see how much effort out students put into activities and the joy they receive from engaging in these activities.

CREATIVE EXPEDITION

March 18, 2019

Year 10 students recently took an enlightening excursion to Fremantle to explore the world of children’s literature and illustration. The trip included a workshop with children’s book author and illustrator Briony Stewart at Paper Bird Children’s Books and Arts, and a meeting with illustrator James Foley (author/illustrator) who comically demonstrated the process of illustrating a children’s book.

After leaving Fremantle inspired, students are now designing a promotional poster to celebrate Book Week as part of their Commercial Design class.

Big Ideas at Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation

November 2, 2018

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will host 22 lucky Year 10 students.

With encouragement from their teacher, Shannon Fletcher, Year 10 students Laura de Silva-Beiter and Charlotte Beale submitted a 40-second video to apply for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation competition, revealing two plans they devised to combat global issues. They have been invited to take part in a Big Ideas Forum in Sydney.
