SCSA Advice – Contingencies for WACE Examinations

September 21, 2020

Last week, Year 12 students and families were emailed by the school with advice and reminders about the upcoming WACE Examinations. This information has also been discussed in Education Plus. Of course, please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions at all.

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) continues to monitor the impact of COVID-19 and is providing ongoing advice for students, teachers, school leaders, parents/guardians/carers and the community as the situation evolves. The Board of SCSA continues to work from the premise that no student should be disadvantaged as a result of the COVID-19 situation. SCSA encourages everyone to stay up-to-date with their latest communications and resources as they become available. Students are asked to log into the SCSA Student Portal every day before each examination.

The Student website https://student.scsa.wa.edu.au/ now includes a general advice page for Year 12s. The page also links to the Curriculum and Assessment Advice – COVID-19 page for students. The updates to the Parent and Community website https://parent.scsa.wa.edu.au/ provide additional information and advice to support Year 12s. The new information is collected under an additional tab: How can I help my Year 12? The focus of the initial SCSA update is on finishing Year 12 (all students) and completing the ATAR course examinations (ATAR students).

Marketing Expo Year 12

September 8, 2020

As a part of the Certificate IV in Business, teams of year 12 students recently participated in a Marketing Expo hosted in Carana House Forum. This Expo required students to identify an existing product, and then remarket it with a range of marketing strategies such as new branding and product features, and a variety of promotional tools and pricing structures. Expo visitors, which included students, teachers and members of St Stephen’s Executive, were able to question each of the student teams about their marketing ideas and provide them with feedback. Students will use this feedback to write a “report to management” about the success of their marketing efforts as one of the final tasks they complete in the Certificate course.

Keen botanist and plant expert Rylan  Year 12) has set up his own native gardens in and around the Science Department with the help of his friend Gabby. Their hard work has resulted in a brighter, more vibrant space – now we can’t wait to watch the plants grow and flower!

Year 12 Biology ATAR

June 9, 2020

Here are some Y12 Biology ATAR students creating DNA profiles via gel electrophoresis.

Gel electrophoresis is a technique commonly used in laboratories to separate charged molecules like DNA according to their size.

They were investigating how this could be applied within forensics and biological conservation.

REIGNING CHAMPS

May 29, 2020

The Senior Boys Cricket Team were the team to beat before all matches were stopped earlier this year. They’ve now finished at the top of their pool and rank third out of 37 schools across the state. Though the usual celebrations aren’t able to take place, we are super proud of the boys and their efforts this year.

BACK TO BUSINESS

May 8, 2020

Our Year 12s are back and have taken no time to rally together to help those in need. They were filled with excitement (and a few nerves) as Adam Snyman shaved his head at their World’s Greatest Shave event yesterday! You can donate to Adam’s fundraising page here: https://bit.ly/2yFSHJh

UPDATED EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

February 10, 2020

The rules of conduct for the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) Year 12 ATAR course examinations will be published in the Year 12 Information Handbook Part II: Examinations 2020, which will be uploaded to the SCSA website in July 2020.

Given the challenge of identifying and determining the use of mobile technologies in the examination room, please note that we have just been notified that a new rule will be implemented from 2020 for the Year 12 ATAR course examinations: no candidate will be permitted to wear or take any watch or wireless-enabled technology device e.g. Fitbit, into the examination room. These items will be considered unauthorised items.

Unauthorised items include:

mobile phone
analogue or smart watch or Fitbit or similar device
mobile device that has wifi and/or bluetooth capabilities
mobile storage device
non-approved calculator
calculator cover
non-transparent pencil case
non-approved notes or any other print material relevant or irrelevant to this examination, (for example, writing on the back of your hand or arm, or blank paper)
headphones, earplugs, earbuds or other unauthorised listening device
wallet, purse or bag
food, lollies or chewing gum
or any other unauthorised item.

The school Year 10-12 Examination Regulations will be updated to include this change, and it will be mentioned to Year 11 and 12 students in Education Plus.
