WANDER OUT YONDER

A group of Year 9, 10 and 11 students and staff ‘Wandered Out Yonder’ on the Lou Morrison Kimberley Service Learning Tour recently. The group travelled from Broome to Kununurra, engaging in activities such as beach clean ups, painting with ocre rocks, canoeing and much more. Ellie Parsons

Ellie actually made it to Sydney for Athletics Nationals on 18 April and got herself a silver medal in U18 pole vault.

 

Josh Davies

Josh was selected in the State School Boys Baseball Team. Unsure of how National Competition will run this year, due to Covid 19.

 

Abbey Shackleton

Abbey has been selected to represent WA at the 2021 Australian National Championship in Gold Coast 13-17 May in the Pre-Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics division.

 

Isabella Djordjevic

Currently putting together routines for both State Championships & National competitions to be held in Sydney during August, & in November will be flying to Queensland for the National championship.

 

Ellis Aitchison

Ellis has been accepted onto the WAIS surf life saving sprint kayak program which lasts for 6 months. Out of 60 athletes that tried out Ellis was granted one of 12 available places.

GREAT OUTDOORS

Year 11 Outdoor Education students headed to the Kaadadjan Centre to explore the landscape, try out their kayaking skills, and test out their camping gear during their Outdoor Education camp recently – it looks like it was an action-packed camp!

MUSIC TO OUR EARS

Duncraig’s musicians showcased their talents at the Senior Music Concert last week. The audience was treated to performances from the St Stephen’s Singers, Senior Guitar Ensemble, Stellas, Fellas, High School Orchestra, Swing Band and Concert Band. Congratulations on a fantastic performance.

BUSHFIRE LANDSCAPES

Learning about bushfire prone areas, what can fuel the fires and how they impact ecosystems and communities was part of the Year 11 Geography excursion to Perth’s hills recently. Seeing the areas firsthand enabled students to assess fuel hazard risks and examine how the landscape and land management can affect fire behaviour.

HOW WOULD YOU STACK UP?

Students in the Gifted and Talented Science program have been practicing Sport Stacking (cup stacking). After reading up on using both sides of the brain, students tested ‘brain lateralisation’ through Stacking that can help to optimise focus; leading to relaxed, high performance. The students have also been in contact with Adelaide teenager Jaydyn Coggins, the world champion in speed stacking, with the view of arranging an online session.

Dr Rina Fu Visit

Dr Rina Fu who visited the Year 11s recently to talk about the Christian Worldview and share the amazing story of how God provided a miracle in her family.

The students were very interested in what she had to say.

Yr 9 Harley Greer (Alethea)– the Normandy D-Day landings as they turned the tide against Hitler and needed incredible strategic planning to achieve this victory

Yr 8 Crockett Groves (Alethea)- 1876 – when the microphone was invented which allowed more people to hear singers and for more people to hear speeches (Martin Luther King – I have a dream speech).

Yr 8 Matthew Aubrey (Alethea) – The invention of the first plane by the Wright brothers and the fact that Neil Armstrong took a piece of the Wright Flyer to the moon

Honourable  mentions for the history competition

Yr 10 Tahlia Papworth (Alethea) – the person Violet Jessop who survived the sinking of the titanic, and two other ships being bombed at sea during WW1 and acted as a nurse in WW1.
