Mobile Phone Use

March 9, 2018

St Stephen’s is very privileged to have such supportive parents. This is evident with the new directive of limiting students access to mobile phones during school hours. Having this message reinforced at home has been fundamental in making this initiative a success.

Did you know?

Nomophobia is the irrational fear of being without your mobile phone or being unable to use your phone for some reason, such as the absence of a signal or running out of minutes or battery power. A phobia is an irrational fear. Do you know this word? Nomophobia is a term describing a growing fear in today’s world — the fear of being without a mobile device, or beyond mobile phone contact. Among today’s high school and college students, it’s on the rise. An increasing number of college students now shower with their cell phone (one of the most important reasons for water-proof mobile phones!). The average adolescent would rather lose a pinky-finger than a mobile phone.

It has been most pleasing to see evidence of mobile phones at School decreasing. We would appeal to parents not to call their children during the School day – this places students in a compromising position. In the case of an emergency, please contact student services. Thank you for the continued support of both parents and students as we pursue the mental health and intellectual benefits of school being a “no phone zone”.

National Day Against Bullying and Violence: Friday March 16th

March 8, 2018

On Friday 16 March 2018, Australian schools will stand united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS.

The National Day is a positive day of action, bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence.

Let’s Take a Stand Together.

ST STEPHEN’S RISING STARS

March 6, 2018

Year 11 and 12 Drama students will entertain us once again with their thought-provoking production of ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’ by Bertolt Brecht. Classed as a political play with a twist, the show is set to make you laugh, gasp and jump, but will leave you thinking about deeper matters that impact our world today. Tickets are $5 and are available at www.trybooking.com/UHWL. Be sure not to miss out! Please note, this production contains simulated violence.

Year 8 & 9 CAS Cricket

March 1, 2018

Below are photos taken at the first home game for this season against Irene McCormack CC. Yesterday’s win by ‘The Saints’ takes us to 2 wins for the season, with our only loss in game one against a strong outfit from Prendiville CC.

The boys have been training at lunchtimes under the watchful eyes of year 12 coaches Paul Forgan (TIM) and Matthew Chadwick, (CAR). Their mentorship and organisation has been outstanding. Our umpires have been amazing as well, with Ben Ryan (year 10 ALE), Thomas Chamoun, (Year 10 CAR), and Oliver Dijkstra, (Year 10 TIM), all officiating with professionalism and care.

In Wednesday’s game, St Stephen’s finished on 3/102, with Mason Neale, (C), Harvey Kemp, (year 9 TIM) , (year 9 TIM), carrying their bats after retiring on over 30 runs. IMCC finished the day on 5/95.

There is a great spirit amongst the team in which our focus has been fairness, participation and respect for the opposition.
