Australian Mathematics Competition

June 19, 2017

We have 215 students that are entered. It is all of our Mathematics 1 students and Yr 11/12 Specialist students.

About the Australian Mathematics Competition

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students. It has become the largest single event on the Australian education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in over 30 countries around the globe.

Running since 1978, the AMC is for students of all standards. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 60 minutes (Years 3–6) or 75 minutes (Years 7–12). The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking rather than focus on calculations themselves, thus such questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competition, so that at the end they are challenging to the most gifted students. Students of all standards will make progress through the problems, and also be challenged along the way.

Wishing everyone the best of luck!

Year 7 Science

May 23, 2017

The Year 7s have been learning about different types of forces in Science, including electrostatic force!

Two of our students particularly enjoyed this hair-raising experience.

Abrolhos Tour Geraldton

The students are having a wonderful time and have been doing really well to complete their practical skills in confined water before we hit the big blue tomorrow.

We really impressed with them all!

Lauren and Maddy instantly loved breathing through their regulators even though they were still on land!

The HMAS Sydney Memorial was really interesting to visit before we watched the full story in 3D at the maritime museum today. Also made a nice spot for the sunset.

All students did a great job smashing through a lot of practical work in the pool today – it’s exhausting stuff and they will be asleep early tonight!

Fingers crossed the weather doesn’t change over night – we are optimistic there’ll be a lot less vomit on our next crossing!

Farewell to staff

April 4, 2017

Words are inadequate to express our gratefulness and appreciation of the incomparable work performance and attitude the following staff have displayed during their tenure with St Stephen’s.

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially to people who have been such valued team members.

We wish you all the best now and into the future.

Head of Learning AREA – Health & Physical Education Nerina Cordner

Nerina joined St Stephens 21 years ago in 1996. She leaves us for an overseas teaching post.

Head of Learning Humanities & Biblical Studies Matt Lovell

Matt joined St Stephen’s in 2013, three years ago. He is moving on to a promotional position at another independent school.

“I have loved working with a great team of professional teachers – I have learned so much and grown more than I could have imagined. Thanks everyone for being part of my journey!” – Matt Lovell

Nessa Carey English Teacher

Nessa joined us a year ago and she is moving to a promotional position at another independent school.

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God, hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Trigonometry around St Stephens

March 30, 2017

A group of Yr 9 students spent their Maths lesson last week deciding if Carana, Timae and Alethea were all the same height.

They used clinometers, measuring tapes and Trigonometry to take measurements and make the calculations to come to a conclusion.

They thoroughly enjoyed applying their mathematics to everyday problems and using new equipment.

HAVE SUM FUN MATHS COMPETITION

March 28, 2017

Recently, St Stephen’s School has had groups of maths students from years 7 to 12 competing in a quiz style maths competition at various schools across the local area.

They took part in teams of up to 6 answering 8 maths problems of varying difficulty over 4 rounds within a time frame of 20 minutes per round.

There were around 20-25 schools competing and the students represented themselves and the school fantastically well and seemed to really enjoy the evening.

The students were lucky enough to explore various exciting problems as well as developing their team working skills.

For those of you who would like an example of the questions then here you go:

Year 7 & 8

  1. A car-wrecker counted 167 tyres on the cars in his yard. He found that not one car had a spare tyre and that 5 cars had at least one tyre missing. What is the greatest number of cars that he could possibly have in his yard?

Year 9 & 10

  1. The head of a fish is 12cm long. The tail is as long as the head and half the length of the main body. The main body is as long as the head and tail together. How long is the fish?

Year 11 & 12

  1. Barry has a drawer containing 12 black, 12 brown, 12 blue and 12 green socks which are not properly paired. He takes socks out of the drawer at random in the dark without replacing any. How many socks must he take out to be certain he has a matched pair in each of the four colours?

I, Adam Merrifield, would like to thank the students and staff involved for giving up their time for helping these evening sessions run smoothly.

Bring on next year!

Exploring Engineering – University Engineer’s Club

March 9, 2017

On Wednesday the University Engineers’ Club (UEC)  hosted an “Exploring Engineering” showcase, where our students, led by Mr Steve Corcoran, were able to participate in various engineering-related activities encompassing the seven disciplines offered at UWA (mechanical, environmental, chemical, mining, civil, electrical and software).

Year 11 & 12 students Declan Duffy, Nick Hodgskin, Liam Ryan, Connor Meagher, Matthew Parrotte and Kushil Vaghjiani were an absolute delight to take on the excursion.

They were a credit to themselves, their parents and St Stephen’s School.

The highlight was making liquid nitrogen ice-cream.

Pictured below are highlights from the day.

Year 10 Girls attend Robogals Workshop

February 23, 2017

Today the Year 10 girls had the opportunity to attend a LEGO Robtotics workshop run by a group of university student volunteers arranged by Mrs Amy Aldous.

In this fun and educational class, students were shown the basics of engineering, robotics and programming using LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits.

The photo below shows students being a human structure.

The purpose of these workshops is to give girls a general idea of what engineering is about and to provide a fun, hands-on engineering experience. The workshops are free for schools and run by volunteers from UWA.

Year 7 & Year 9 NAPLAN Information

February 14, 2017

Dear Parents,

This week Year 7 and Year 9 students will bring home an information booklet about the National Assessment Program – Numeracy and Literacy (NAPLAN). This contains details of when the tests will be held and how you can support your child. Please ask your child to hunt around in their school bag so this information does not get lost!

Australasian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad

November 21, 2016

In the last academic year, 16 students from Yr 7 and 8 were selected to participate in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad. These students completed five challenges in five months, and spent time with Mathematics teachers practicing their problem solving skills in the buildup to each challenge. These students, pictured above, recently received their certificates. Alice Ward was awarded the trophy for the highest score in the SSS team as well as the Special Achievement award for the greatest improvement. Alice Ward, Connor Mann and Callum Stephens were also awarded patches as their scores were in the top 25% of all participants in Division S. 20161114_112632
