HOME AWAY FROM HOME

August 5, 2020

St Stephen’s School is excited to announce our new program for regional students that turns traditional boarding arrangements on their head. Partnering with Talkabout Homestay, the Home Away From Home (HAFH) program provides students from regional WA with a comfortable homestay environment in Perth while attending our School.

Do you know a regional family who might be interested in becoming part of the St Stephen’s School community? Or would you like to register your interest in becoming a host family?

We would love you to help us spread the word. Find out more under Enrolments on our website or email homeawayfromhome@ststephens.wa.edu.au.

NCCD Notice

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school provides data to the Australian Government – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information regarding the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data school students with disability, please visit: NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

This is a national fact sheet about the NCCD for parents, guardians and carers.

SENDING LOVE

August 3, 2020

Though our students weren’t able to travel on the South Africa Service Tour this year, it hasn’t stopped them from giving generously to our friends at Sinethemba Children’s Care Centre. With the money the students raised this year, the Centre was able to purchase new mattresses and three bunk beds, thanking our students and wider community for their kindness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plastic FREE July

June 19, 2020

Plastic Free July kicks off for its tenth year in just under two weeks, and we’re popping into your inbox today to help you prepare. Now we know that for many, this Plastic Free July is going to be a little (or a lot!) more challenging than it has been in previous years, due to the various Covid-19 restrictions in place. This is your reminder that no-one (least of all us!) is expecting you to be perfect.

All we ever ask of you is that you do what you can.

And remember, it wouldn’t be called the Plastic Free July challenge if it was easy!

So yes, it’s going to be a challenge, and we’re going to help you as much as we can.

QUICK TIPS

  • Start looking in your fridge, pantry and bathroom, and in your general waste and recycling bins, and see what plastic you notice. Choose one, two or three things that you want to try to swap out, and start looking for alternatives NOW (it will be easier than waiting until July!)
  • Don’t forget to complete our ‘Pesky Plastic’ quiz! We created it to get you thinking about where all the plastic is in your life.
  • Get together a ‘plastic-free kit’ for your handbag, bike or car. You could include a water bottle, some napkins, reusable cutlery, reusable shopping bags – whatever it is you think you’ll need!
  • Start the conversation with friends, family, colleagues (the person at the coffee shop, the person at the supermarket checkout…). If you’re shy, you can use our Plastic Free July 2020 image (pictured here) as a Facebook profile picture or Instagram tile to share on social media, and we’ve created a Plastic Free July email signature if you’d like to quietly slide into people’s inboxes 😉
