SCIENCE TALK

November 29, 2018

There was a flurry of excitement yesterday as Year 8 and 9 Science students proudly displayed research projects they have been working on for much of the year. It was science communication at its best as parents and friends listened intently while the students explained their chosen research subjects and findings, with topics ranging from Plants under Radiation and electro magnetics to wash and wear makeup and looking beyond the brands.

Year 8 Presentation Boards

November 28, 2018

Each Y8 group chose their own area of science to investigate and presented last night to the St Stephen’s community. They did a fantastic job and Miss Ross was very proud of the work they produced and their ability to communicate their findings!

Big Ideas at Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation

November 2, 2018

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will host 22 lucky Year 10 students.

With encouragement from their teacher, Shannon Fletcher, Year 10 students Laura de Silva-Beiter and Charlotte Beale submitted a 40-second video to apply for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation competition, revealing two plans they devised to combat global issues. They have been invited to take part in a Big Ideas Forum in Sydney.

What an achievement, well done!

Keeping up with Year 9 in Science

August 17, 2018

Students in year 9 Science were challenged to build their own electromagnets and work out how to make the magnet stronger.  Students worked out that by adding more coils of copper wire to their iron nail their electromagnet became stronger and they could pick up more metal objects.  Students worked out the applications for electromagnets in industry.

Students used learnt new skills and prior knowledge to build a working motor using a copper coil and rare earth magnets.

Electricity with Year 9

July 27, 2018

In year 9 science we are exploring electricity, we have looked at static electricity and enjoyed learning about how the van der Graaf generator works.  We have also started to learn about current electricity and how it flows through a circuit.  Students are learning how to measure electricity and draw circuit diagrams.

WANTED Plant Pots

July 26, 2018

An excellent group of our Yr 11 student are fundraising for their service learning trip to Cambodia next year. As part of this we are looking for empty plant pots that you may have filling up your back shed. If you want to get rid of them they would be greatly appreciated and accepted by the group. The pots can be left either up at the Science building or Student services.

Thank you in anticipation.
