Rats Ahoy!

March 23, 2018

This afternoon the Y11 ATAR Biology class investigated all the systems by rat dissection! Students could fully investigate all systems by identifying all the parts and discussing their functions. They even made a time lapse to show the full procedure! Pretty cool!

The gravity of the situation…

March 20, 2018

As part of the Year 9 Earth and Space Science course, the students have been looking at how gravity played a significant role in the formation of the solar system and the planets within it, including the Earth.

The students simulated the curving of space time and how this causes matter to clump together and in some cases, go into orbit!

Year 12 Gel Electrophoresis

February 20, 2018

The  Y12 Biology students were creating DNA profiles to catch: murders, thieves, evil twins, unfaithful spouses and genetic clones this afternoon by using gel electrophoresis technology.

Exciting stuff!

Fishy Excursion

November 29, 2017

The Year 10 Marine Science students spent today at AQWA, exploring the various marine habitats of the Western Australian coast which we have spent the term studying.

The students also had the opportunity to Discover SCUBA Diving for the first time in AQWA’s new purpose-built tank. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to experience breathing underwater and the change in pressure which is often daunting for inexperienced divers.

After an immensely successful day there looks like lots of them have caught the SCUBA-bug and will hopefully be taking part in an Open Water Course in Year 11 or 12!”

“Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.” – Genesis 1:20-21

Mousetrap? Year 9 Science

November 27, 2017

As part of their study of the Scientific Method, the Year 9 Science students planned, designed, built and tested an original Rube Goldberg machine, with the aim of catching a mouse!

The students incorporated a number of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics principles to make the machine work. After multiple test runs and various last minute adjustments, the students were ready for a final attempt. There were a few little hiccups, but on the whole it was a success.

SSS OW Course

November 27, 2017

Below are some pics from the pool dives with our SSS OW course this year. The students are year 11 and 12’s from the Marine & Maritime Studies classes and are learning their dive skills in the pool before hitting open water.

Diving at the Rockingham Wreck Trail

November 27, 2017

Below are some pics of the dive groups we have down at Rockingham Wreck Trail for the first Open Water Dives! All groups had no problems getting to 12m and even though the visibility was average they saw the planes, boat and a sea snake!

Tables as Whiteboards

November 15, 2017

Students love our whiteboard tables, and use them in all kinds of ways.  They are perfect for problem solving.  Before beginning writing tasks, students can quickly draw a mind map of ideas, then get to work.

Working on the table means it is easy to share thinking and ideas which spurs conversations. Using the whiteboard tables encourages students to be creative. Students who are reluctant to begin pen and paper tasks don’t seem to have that hesitation with the dry erase pens.

Pictured below are some Year 11 Marine and Maritime students using the table.
