Year 7’s Create-A-Creature Models

September 14, 2018

Year 7’s Create a creature models  turned out very well this year! Their mission was to design a creature that would thrive in a given ecosystem. They had to explore the biotic and abiotic factors to adapt their creature to the environment.

Two Day Immersion in the University Experience

September 14, 2018

The Y12 ATAR Biology  students were fully immerged in university life during an action packed 2 day experience. Day 1 we visited the Harry Perkins medical research institute where they learned about stem cells and their application to future scientific development. Day 2 they explored nanotechnology and how it will revolutionise the future world developing materials and treatments that seem impossible. They also explored the genetic application in forensics and anthropology so that it can be used to obtain justice and make discoveries.

FIRST LEGO Tryouts

September 13, 2018

Tryouts were held in the Community Room at lunch time today under the watchful eyes of Mrs Aldous, Mr Knight and Mrs Yan.

FIRST is an internationally acclaimed robotics program that inspires a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in young people.

FIRST® LEGO® League is a multi-part competition judged on three important elements:

1. Robot

Teams design, build and program a LEGO® robot to complete a series of challenges. The robot has to operate on pre-programmed instructions, and complete as many tasks as possible in only 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The challenge changes every year, and is always based on the years central theme. The 2013 game, Natures Fury, was based on natural disasters and robots had to clear branches of power lines, raise flood warning signs, and more. Teams compete on adjacent tables to score as many points as possible, and a number of awards are given for robot performance, programming innovation and clever design.

2. Project

Every year, teams study the years theme and develop solutions to problems theyve identified in society. Through the project, teams learn more about the competition theme and present their ideas to a panel of judges. Working on the project teaches students to research, think critically, work as a team and speak publicly. The project shows students they have the power to change the world, as teams can share successful ideas with their community, their school, their families, even all of Australia and the world. The international FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award provides teams with a way to share their solution with the entire global FIRST community.

3. Core Values

Throughout the competition, teams are judged on their adherence to the FIRST® LEGO® League core values, including teamwork, Coopertition®, and Gracious Professionalism®. This aspect of FIRST®LEGO® League is designed to develop the students of today into the responsible citizens of tomorrow. Good examples of Core Values are observed and recognised with awards and trophies. Through this celebration of good qualities, FIRST® LEGO® League seeks to make students into better competitors, citizens, problem-solvers and engineers.

September 13, 2018

Today is R U OK? Day.

As we always remain vigilant of how our students, staff and families are, today staff across both campuses came together to ask the question while raising funds for the ever-important message. Asking the question is a start but we are always more interested in finding out the answer.

Service Learning

September 11, 2018

Recently I had the fortune of taking four Year 9 boys for a Service Learning excursion to Joondalup Library where we helped seniors solve their iPad issues (with help from ECU volunteers). For me it was a lot of fun and very rewarding to be a part of.

I just wanted tto commend the boys on their efforts and how well they communicated with those needing help. The seniors I spoke to said the boys knew a lot, were informative, friendly and explained the instructions clearly – future teachers maybe?

Commendations to the boys who came, as they did a fabulous job:

On a humorous sidenote, the photo below is of Tom Sorrell chatting a couple’s ears off about his experiences with trojan viruses and ransomware. Look how captivated they are!

September 10, 2018

Secondary students performed with zest and zeal on Friday night, filling the Theatre with terrific tunes at the Senior Music Concert. Audiences were delighted with performances from the Concert Band, Secondary Orchestra, Swing Band, Stellas, Fellas and more, as the evening showcased a year of hard work for our Music students.

Bravo!
