Andy Quilty Incursion

Year 11 students took part in a drawing workshop with award-winning artist Andy Quilty. The workshop focused on the notion of drawing as a process of discovery. Students developed important skills, employing experimental methodologies and risk- taking and introducing the notion of ‘happy accidents’ as fundamental to the art making process. Building confidence as well as technical skills, participants will gain the ability to take a more intuitive and exploratory approach to their work.

Topic: Transitioning from Childhood to Adolescence: What to Expect

The developmental transition from childhood to adolescence brings many significant physical, psychological, social and emotional changes. Adjusting to these changes can be a challenging time for both parents and young people. This evenings presentation will provide information about the changes to expect in children as they journey towards adolescence, discuss puberty and mental health, outline the best ways parents can support and respond to the changing needs of children in their transition from primary school to high school, and provide practical tips highlighting how parents can effectively communicate and partner with the school to assist children to feel more confident and ease the transition to high school.

Try’A Trade

This week some of our Year 10 and Year 9 students are at Try’A Trade at the Clarkson campus of NMetro Tafe. Over 3 days they will have a go at plastering, tiling and bricklaying.

This state-of-the-art facility is the main campus for trades training in Perth’s northern corridor.

Try’a Trade is a day where students can try a number of trades and learn more about the many career options the industry provides. Students might be thinking of a career in the trades or maybe still figuring out what job pathway they might like to pursue. Either way, Try’a Trade is the perfect way to try a whole range of options all in the same day.

The best part about Try’a Trade is that it’s really hands on. Students get the chance to drill, hammer, and plaster while learning from real tradespeople.

Year 9 Ration Challenge

Can you imagine eating only rice, lentils and sardines for three days straight?

This is what Year 9 students and Mr Dale Kelly will do as they take part in the Ration Challenge, where they will eat only what a refugee eats for three days. Their challenge will take place during Refugee Week, which runs from 17 to 24 June 2018.

Students will receive a ration pack consisting of basic food items, and while they raise awareness, they also raise funds for the cause. The food in each ration pack, which includes rice, lentils, chick peas, sardines and some oil, will feed each person for the three days.

This activity ties in with the Year 9 students in two ways:

  1. Part of the English course is that they are currently studying Anh Do’s The Happiest Refugee
  2. The Rite Journey aims to explore ideas about advocating for those in need.

A6 Service Learning

A6 recently went to Bethanie Age Care in Kingsley as part of their Service Learning programme accomanied by Mrs Libbis and Mrs Yan.

Service-learning is an approach to teaching and learning in which students use academic knowledge and skills to address genuine community needs.
