Hello teachers, staff, and St Stephen’s community,
This month is the World’s Greatest Shave, an event organised by the Leukaemia foundation in order to fund blood cancer research. We’re organising a fundraiser for the Leukaemia foundation and it’d be great to have involvement from teachers.
For the last week of school we’d like to have teachers and students alike with their hair dyed unnatural colours, wearing wigs, or with their hair cut off.
For the teachers, what we’re going to have is a tiered system where as we raise more money, the more teachers dye their hair, wear a wig, or shave their head. This provides an incentive for students to raise money however it also means that if you sign up you may not necessarily be wearing a wig, dying hair, or shaving in the final week of term.
If you are interested in joining in you can you please send an email my way so that we can get you on board before we announce the fundraiser this Tuesday in assembly. If during the fundraiser you decide you want to join in also just email me and we’ll add you in; it’s never too late.
A few other points:
Students will be donating money to dye their hair, shave their head, or wear a wig so the teachers won’t be the only ones in the final week. If students want to partake they’ll need to give the money and the signed parental consent form to their House Deans. Collected by HOUSE CAPTAINS AND FUNDRAISERS
We’ll be announcing the fundraiser on Tuesday (13 March) and the fundraising will stop on Friday the 6th of April. That Friday those students and teachers who’ve signed up for buzz cut will get it done in the quad during lunch. We’ll be collecting money every Wednesday during homeroom while the fundraiser is running.

Our CAS Duncraig Juniors took on Peter Moyes Anglican Community School (PMA) this week, with a mixed bag of results and a great display of sportsmanship overall.
The Junior Boys hosted PMA at home, winning three of the four games. The Year 8/9 Boys Tennis won 3/1, Year 9 Boys Basketball took the game 39-29 and The Saints Year 8/9 Boys Cricket smashed out a score of 10/231 over PMA’s 10/194. Year 8 Boys Basketball worked well as a team but were pipped by PMA 54-22.
Our Junior Girls played at PMA. The Year 8/9 Girls Tennis team also won 3-1, the Girls Year 8 Basketball came out on top with 29-22 and the Year 9s slam dunked with 45-8. Junior Touch played hard but just missed out.
Good luck next week to all our CAS sportspeople against St Mark’s as we approach the finals!
Students from Carramar and Duncraig recently spent for 5 days in Canberra and the AIS, where they lived, breathed and ate with our elite sporting stars!
During that time students attended various lectures, participated in clinics ran by the male and female Australian basketball players, attended fitness sessions on land and in the water, wrestled it out in a waterpolo session, and ate and slept in the athletes facilities.
Students were buzzing on the flight home and we look forward to taking another group in 2020!!
Yesterday Visual Art teacher Verity Palmer and Art Technician Claire Davenhall took the Year 9 Visual Art students to Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe.
Two artists were on hand to talk to the students, Rima Zabaneh and Andrea Vinkovic.
This is the 14th Annual Cottesloe Exhibition of Sculptures by the Sea.
Sculpture by the Sea was established in 2005 and is the world’s largest FREE to the public sculpture exhibition, having generally over 70 sculptures designed by artists from all over the world. The exhibition is featured from the sea wall, all the way along the sand towards North Cottesloe and on the grassed areas around the beach, and this creates a unique sculpture park.
Well worth a visit!
“The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land.” – Psalm 95:5
St Stephen’s is very privileged to have such supportive parents. This is evident with the new directive of limiting students access to mobile phones during school hours. Having this message reinforced at home has been fundamental in making this initiative a success.
Did you know?
Nomophobia is the irrational fear of being without your mobile phone or being unable to use your phone for some reason, such as the absence of a signal or running out of minutes or battery power. A phobia is an irrational fear. Do you know this word? Nomophobia is a term describing a growing fear in today’s world — the fear of being without a mobile device, or beyond mobile phone contact. Among today’s high school and college students, it’s on the rise. An increasing number of college students now shower with their cell phone (one of the most important reasons for water-proof mobile phones!). The average adolescent would rather lose a pinky-finger than a mobile phone.
It has been most pleasing to see evidence of mobile phones at School decreasing. We would appeal to parents not to call their children during the School day – this places students in a compromising position. In the case of an emergency, please contact student services. Thank you for the continued support of both parents and students as we pursue the mental health and intellectual benefits of school being a “no phone zone”.
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!” – Psalm 133:1
On Friday 16 March 2018, Australian schools will stand united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).
The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS.
The National Day is a positive day of action, bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence.
Let’s Take a Stand Together.
