Relocation of Student Bike Racks

The student bike racks will be relocated in the next holiday break to two areas on the campus. One set will be placed next to the secondary basketball courts near Timae House, the others adjacent to the Alethea House. The new locations can be viewed on the attached map.  Duncraig Bike Racks 2017

Students can access the bike racks via Doveridge Drive, Hepburn Road or the cycle path on the eastern side of the campus. When on school grounds it is an expectation that students dismount, and walk their bikes to the racks. Please remind your sons and daughters that it is expected that all student bikes are secured using a lock when on campus.

Hospitality Successes

September 18, 2017

Last night Vicki O’Connor and I had the pleasaure of attending the HGT ( Hospitality Group Training) Youth Skills Showcase at the Hyatt ballroom. The top 20 young apprentice chefs in WA had been selected to create and present the food. The theme for the night was Australia and featured amazing Australian food and flavours.

We were delighted to see that  Tegan Cardosa, current Year 12 student and completing a Cert II Hospitality front of House certificate in External VET was there, having been selected to help serve the 500 guests.

Then we noticed that Zac Tholen was one of the chefs selected to work in the kitchen in the entre team. I later discovered from his mother that Zac created and was responsisible on the night for the vegetarian entre option for those with dietary needs. Zac is a 1st year apprentice chef at North Beach Deli. Zac left school at the end of last year from year 11 wanting to follow his passion for food.

The highlight of the evening was seeing Sean Woolford (Class of 2014) as Chef de Cuisine for dessert. He created the dessert ( see the picture below) and was responsible for leading the team of dessert chefs for the night. Sean is  finishing his apprenticeship in January next year and is currently at Hillarys Yacht Club a la carte restaurant. It was great to hear him speak about his dessert via video link from the kitchen.

Strawberry gumleaf cake and lilli lilli/orange maramlade, served with vanilla panna cotta , chocolate macadamia crumb and rosella puree.

The students and their families were pleased for me to circulate their photos and their story of success. Sean said he would love to talk to other Hospitality students . I have never heard him speak so passionately.

40th Synod of Western Australia

Year 10 students Jordan Carter and Hannah Vawser represented SSS at the Opening Worship of Synod last week. Jordan and Hannah are pictured below after delivering the Prayer for Others with the Moderator of the Uniting Church in Western Australia, Rev Steve Francis.

 

Indonesian Consulate Visit

September 12, 2017

On Friday the 8th of September the year 8 students currently studying Indonesian had the opportunity to visit the Indonesian Consulate in East Perth. They participated in a number of workshops including learning to play traditional Gamelan instruments and learnt Indonesian dance from the island of Sumatera. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience the richness of Indonesian culture and apply the language they have been learning at school in the Indonesian community.

Focus on a career in Law

If you are exploring a career in Law, this email provides a snapshot of the Bachelor of Laws at Notre Dame.

  • For first year students, only 120 places are available with an average class size of 31
  • The Bachelor of Laws is a 4 year degree studied full-time (part time study is available)
  • The Notre Dame Schools of Law recently ranked first out of all law schools in New South Wales and Western Australia for Overall Quality of Educational Experience (91.3%),Teaching Quality (92.9%), Overall Leaner Engagement (80.3%) and for Student Support (90.6%) (Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching).
  • The Bachelor of Laws degree is an accredited degree for admission to legal practice.  It combines excellent coverage of underlying legal and ethical principles with an explanation of how those principles are applied in legal practice.
  • The degree has a particular focus on the basic building blocks of the law (the legally required “Priestley” subjects) and on developing practical skills such as public speaking, advocacy, alternative dispute resolution and commercial practice skills.
  • The mentoring and internship programs provide students with many opportunities to experience the law in practice.
  • Delivered at Broadway

Double degrees – combine a Bachelor of Laws with the choice of a Bachelor of: Arts; Arts (Politics & Journalism); Commerce; Communications & Media; Marketing & Public Relations; Philosophy; or Theology.

Admission Requirements for School Leavers

  • ATAR of 90, indicative only, or an IB of 31+, indicative only.
  • No HSC subject is an essential pre-requisite for the Law degree. As the study of law requires excellent English comprehension and language, strong results in subjects which involve a significant amount of reading and writing (for example, English, History, Legal Studies or Studies of Religion) are the best indicators of likely success in studying a law degree.

The Interview

  • The interview stage is an important part of the admissions process. It gives university staff a chance to discuss the above points with each applicant; and provides the opportunity for the applicant to meet the Dean, the Associate Dean, the Assistant Dean or other senior academic from the School of Law and ask any questions they may have.

ST STEPHEN’S GLOBAL INDONESIAN TOUR

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

St Stephen’s School would like to announce its inaugural Indonesia: Bali Life Foundation Service Tour 2018 open to students currently studying in Years 9 and 10 (Years 10 and 11 2018). Bali Life Foundation is a small charity based in Jimbaran, Bali where they care for and educate young disadvantaged children and youth.

Our students will engage in volunteer work at the orphanage as well as the Bali Life support services within the locality of central and southwest Bali. These services include Suwung Community School, Bali Life Sustainable Community Garden, Kuta Street Kids and Mothers Program, and the Training and Education Community Centre.

The tour will consist of 16 students and 3 staff from across both campuses and will be departing 17 April, returning 24 April, 2018 (first week of the April holidays). The approximate cost of the tour will be $1200.

We will be seeking expressions of interest from students in October 2017.

Bicycle thefts

September 8, 2017

Over the last month we have had three bicycles stolen from the bike racks. On both occasions thieves have used bolt cutters – on the first occasion to cut through our fence (as the gate there is locked)  and on the last occasion this week, to cut the cable securing a student’s bicycle. Last term we had 2 bicycles that had been left at school over a weekend stolen.

We know from experience that cameras in this situation are not a deterrent and simply change the plans of thieves. Our grounds staff have been patrolling the area regularly each day, and thefts have occurred when they are out of sight. On occasion cameras help police identify culprits after a theft. The proximity of the cycle racks to the public foot path which leads to the pedestrian bridge and to the station has sadly become a factor.

During the September / October break we will be moving the bike racks to areas further from the perimeter fence and to areas where is more regular “school traffic” to act as a deterrent to thieves. We have identified areas and once the racks are relocated we will inform students as well as establish expectations regarding where students should dismount and push bicycles. From the start of next term students will rack and lock their bicycles away from the edges of the school.
