How to Begin an Extended Paragraph Response… EFFECTIVELY

Please note the image above.

This is a response to a feature article called When the War Came Home by Scott Hannaford.

Some teaching and learning points:

  • Note that the first sentence acts as a THESIS statement. It uses the key terms from the question and establishes a clear sense of direction and focus for the extended paragraph.
  • Notice that first sentence also refers to the text type, title and author.
  • The second sentence acts as a topic sentence to contextualise the first language feature.
  • The next sentence refers to ‘verbs’… my first language feature.
  • Note that the quotations are short and relevant.
  • Also note that the topic sentence also uses a key word from the question… this was deliberate and it should signpost to the examiner that I understand the question and that I am using those key words to frame my argument.
  • I then show how/why those quotations are important/significant.
  • I also use the word ‘trauma’ to refer back to my use of the word ‘traumatised’ in my thesis statement. This is also deliberate.
