Indigenous Veteran’s Commemoration Service WA State War Memorial – Kings Park – 31st May 2017

June 1, 2017

HASS staff, Leeanne Shanks and Matthew Smith celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders contribution to the defence of our country during a moving ceremony at Kings Park. It was opened by Her Excellency, the Honorable Kerry Sanderson, AC – Governor of Western Australia and continued with a welcome to country by Uncle Mort Hansen.

Highlights of the ceremony were a performance were a didgeridoo performance with traditional dancers from Whadjak Northside Balga SHS Dance Group and the Noongar Prayer by Rev Sealin Garlett.  This was followed by a moving speech by Uncle Frank Mallard where the injustices experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians were laid bare for all to see.  Many servicemen fought at Gallipoli and returned to experience racism, prejudice and exclusion by the majority of Australians and the conservative branches of the armed forces.  This message was reinforced by Mr Ron Bradfield Jnr who shared his experiences of returning from a tour of service in 1992 and being refused service and told to drink at the ‘black bar’.

During the wreath laying, a symbol of reconciliation was presented as the bagpipes and didgeridoo played in harmony. This unusual combination of instruments struck a haunting but hopeful tone. After the last post, minute silence and reveille the service ended with Uncle Mort Hansen performing a traditional smoking ceremony.

Both Leeanne Shanks and Matthew Smith, along with UWA pre-service teacher Will Garven, felt privileged to be invited to this prestigious and culturally important event.

ASELL Workshop

May 17, 2017

Last week St Stephen’s School hosted a workshop for the ASELL Project (Advancing Science and Engineering through Laboratory Learning) which is part of a collaboration between several universities across Australia, including Curtin University in Perth. The project aims to enhance teaching in the laboratory by carrying out and evaluating experiments that have been devised by host school teachers.

The ASELL workshops are aimed at increasing teacher confidence and reflection when planning and presenting experiments/investigations to students.

Our Science staff and some students were taken through a process of reflection and improvement using student feedback. It was an excellent opportunity for staff to gain further skills and feedback from students and leading academics with an aim for continual improvement in the Science teaching program.

Year 9 Community Service

May 5, 2017

The Year 9 Music class are heading to Bethanie home in Kingsley to interview some of the residents about the music they loved to listen to when younger.  There are some wonderful studies going on regarding the power of music that helps unlock memories for patients with dementia and alzheimers as well as its ability to incite movement and a better physical well being.

The plan is for our students to research the music after the interview and return at a later date with personalised iPods in the hope that we bring a lot of happiness to the residents at Bethanie home.

Do you have a pre-loved or unused iPod at home? Students are asking the community to donate their old iPods for the Music Memory Project at Bethanie Aged Care Home this term.

Donations will be accepted at Admin and Student Services across Duncraig and Carramar.

New kiss ‘n’ drive bays

April 7, 2017

Dear Parents,

Each morning and afternoon the turning circle outside the secondary area can become congested as parents/guardians drop off and pick up their children.

In the interests of easing this congestion, we would like to advise that we will be making changes to this area to enable parents to safely and efficiently pick up and drop off their children at secondary.

Please be advised that over the coming weeks, the ‘no parking bays’ located at the top of the turning circle will be reallocated as ‘kiss ‘n’ drive bays’ (maximum 1min stop).

Kiss ‘n’ drive bays are designed to maximise traffic flow to and from the pickup area, respecting the needs of all parents to collect their children.

Parents can greatly assist this process by arriving when School is dismissed which helps reduce waiting times and ensures the process is smooth.

We ask that you please acknowledge this change to ensure the benefits are passed on to our community.

Thank you

Mr Bruce Titlestad
Duncraig Head of Secondary
