Yiyili Aboriginal Community School (YACS)

April 4, 2017

St Stephen’s partnership with Yiyili Aboriginal Community School (YACS) in the Kimberley has seen us loan some e-books to the local students this term.

Great to see the learning opportunities this partnership is bringing for SSS and YACS.

End of term wishes

April 3, 2017

Dear Students and Parents

The end of a busy term has arrived – along with the end of the semester. This term has been filled with camps, carnivals, inter-school competition, clubs, tours, music and drama. You only have to scroll down to see the photographs and descriptions of many of the events and to celebrate the positive attitude and vibrancy of St Stephen’s School.

A highlight over the past 2 weeks has been the process of interviewing prospective families for places for Year 7 in 2019. Two things that characterise the families seeking places at Stephen’s School for their children seemed to be (1) wanting a place where their values would gel with the School and the families here, and (2) wanting to be in a place where like-minded people want similar things for their children.  Over and over again I heard similar statements: “I know people at St Stephen’s”; “I have met children from St Stephen’s”; “I want my child to be like the students I have met from St Stephen’s”, and “I want a place which understands there is more to my child than his grades” (even though the grades were very good!)

We have something remarkable in common at St Stephen’s School: we have a like-minded community of families wanting the best for their children and teachers wanting to engage and excite those children. This incredible synergy comes from the fact that everyone in this place is here by choice and because our choices are underpinned by commonly shared hopes for our children. This morning I was wandering around the School after a staff devotion in Timae: as I encountered and greeted students on their way to their first class, I was reminded of how courteous and kind our students are and how easy it is to like them. The families our students come from do such a good job of raising their children. The fabric of our School is woven in the homes of our students.

As we approach the break and Easter, I would like to wish each family and every student and every staff member a blessed and safe Easter. If you are travelling take care. We look forward to seeing you next term.

Regards

Bruce Titlestad

St Stephen’s Libraries – The Heart of 21st Centry Learning

March 30, 2017

The school library is integral to the teaching and learning process.

The library facilitates the work of the classroom teacher and ensures each student has equitable access to resources.

While the role of the school library remains constant, its design, digital platform, strategies and tools change as pedagogy and technology changes.

Our thriving school libraries provide a social space to meet, collaborate, research, learn, share and relax.

EXAMINATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS

March 24, 2017

ST STEPHEN’S SCHOOL DUNCRAIG

EXAMINATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS

Examinations and Externally Set Tasks

Wear your school uniform to all examinations. PE uniform is acceptable for written examinations in the exam period but it must be worn PERFECTLY. For practical examinations, check requirements with your teacher prior. The Externally Set Task is completed in school time, and so normal school uniform should be worn.

Bring your SmartRider Card, which will have your ID number, to all exams. Bring only the appropriate equipment, including spare pens, pencils, calculator and batteries. Ball point pens must be used, no gel pens. Equipment must be in a clear plastic bag, no pencil cases. Check requirements with your teachers prior to exams.

Be outside the examination room (or the classroom for an Externally Set Task) at least 20 minutes before the start time. Students will usually be let in before “reading time” actually starts. Enter the room in silence.

Check the seating plan, if there is one, so that you know which row to sit in.

Do not bring any unauthorised materials into the room. This includes mobile phones, smart watches and any other mobile technologies or unauthorised calculators.

You will be provided with only standard answer booklets (or paper if allowed), where you can do any planning work and these will be handed in. Rough work needs to be clearly labelled as such.

Follow instructions from the supervisor. Failure to adhere to the supervisor’s instructions can be a breach of exam rules.

In the case of a breach of the guidelines, penalties as outlined in the school Assessment Policy and the SCSA WACE Manual will be applied.

If you need to leave the room temporarily, please put your hand up and wait until a supervisor comes to speak to you.

Keep calm outside the examination room before entering. It is important that you are calm and that you allow others to be calm.

Should you become very unwell on the day of an examination or Externally Set Task, please phone Student Services on 9243 2101 and obtain a medical certificate. If at all possible, it is preferable that you come in and sit the assessment if you can.

Announcement from Department of Health WA

March 21, 2017

Free meningococcal vaccines for WA teenagers

Announcement from Department of Health WA:

A vaccination to protect against meningococcal strains A, C, W and Y will be offered to 15-19 year olds in an Australian-first, state-wide program to start at school in Term 2.

More than 150,000 WA students and young adults are expected to be vaccinated over the three-year program, with the cost covered by the State Government, making it free to the target group.

This year, the program will provide immunisations in school to year 10, 11, and 12 students, with additional vaccinations conducted at community health clinics to capture 18-19 year olds and other age-eligible persons not attending high school.

In 2018 and 2019, the program will target incoming Year 10 students only.

The school-based vaccination program is expected to begin when sufficient vaccine supplies have been delivered, starting in school Term 2, with the majority of vaccinations planned for Term 3. The planned date for vaccinations at St Stephen’s Duncraig is August 17th 2017 starting at 0830.

Parents can expect to receive meningococcal W vaccination consent materials through school this week. Consent forms will then need to be returned to the school by Wednesday 29th March 2017 so the City of Joondalup Vaccination team can collate numbers.

For more information download the frequently asked questions (PDF 94KB) or read more about meningococcal disease.

Any questions please direct to School Nurse on 9243 2419.
