Term 4, Week 6

Dads and Kids Campout 2022

This year’s Dads and Kids campout was a great success, in spite of some rainy weather. Sixteen Dads and their respective kids, along with Mr Simms and Mr Sloan, gathered early Friday afternoon, at Kaadadjan Centre, the school’s campsite, to set up camp and hit the Murray River in canoes for a paddle upstream. Some brave souls even tried out the rope swing! We set up the campfire, cooked a barbecue dinner and spent the night around the fire, toasting marshmallows and cooking damper. After a damp night and a storm early Saturday morning which kept us under cover, we had a cooked breakfast and then the weather fined up, so we went for a hike around the perimeter of the property. It was a picturesque walk with lots of wildflowers on show. Upon returning to camp some of us hit the water for a final paddle, before packing up and heading home. Everyone enjoyed getting to know people a little better and enjoying the break away in nature.

Children’s Beach Safety Programs

As the weather warms up and our community begins to spend more time down at the beach, it’s important to equip your child with the necessary skills to be safe and aware around the amazing WA coastline and other water environments.

Surf Life Saving WA run programs across summer, for kids from as young as two years of age at more than 10 metro and regional beaches throughout WA. Enjoy peace of mind that your child knows how to be safe around water. Children will learn basic safety signals and be introduced to the patrolling lifesavers.

A Night on The Green

Final Day of Term 4 Celebrations (Wednesday 7 December)

To end the year on a high note, please note that we will be holding a final Assembly at approximately 11:45am in the Primary Forum followed by a Fun Colour Run on The Green at approximately 12:15pm 🙂! All parents are welcome to attend! Students will be dismissed from school at 1pm. Lots of fun to end our 2022 academic year! We suggest families bring a few spare garbage bags to cover their car seats as students will no doubt be a little messy after their run 🙂!

Below is some important information to note for this event:

What do students need to wear?

The optimal effect of a Colour Run occurs when participants wear a plain, white t-shirt.  Old clothes that you will not mind getting slightly stained (see below regarding possible staining). We also recommend for students to wear goggles.

Do all students need to run?

The Colour Run will not be compulsory. However, all students are encouraged to participate and enjoy the celebration 🙂.

How is the colour administered?

A running course on The Green will be set up. Designated staff will be stationed along the course to gently dispense colour powder along the way. All colour powder will be aimed between shoulder & hip level.

What is the colour made from? Does it stain?

The coloured powder we are using is made from 99% corn-starch and natural food grade dyes. We’ve been told it doesn’t stain, but you never know… We feel it would be best to wear old sneakers or opt to run with bare feet. Please note that we do not take any responsibility for costs associated with the removal of colour.

Will the Colour ruin clothes or running shoes?

The colour does wash out after the event. As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it, the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colourful. Please note that we do not take any responsibility for costs associated with the removal of colour.

Share the Dignity ‘It’s in The Bag’

Each November Share the Dignity donate thousands of bags to women in need. Each bag is filled with essentials and gifts to help women, teenagers and new mums in crisis or emergency accommodation.

Over the past 5 years our Secondary girls have been collecting and packing these bags.

WE NEED YOU to help make 2022 our BIGGEST year and beat our previous bag record of 130 bags!

Please consider donating your preloved handbags or pop into your local Salvo’s and grab a bag from there. We also want those unopened toiletries hiding in the back of your bathroom cupboard. Most importantly, we need sanitary products, unopened pads and tampons, cups or underwear. Women shouldn’t have to choose between feeding themselves and their children or buying sanitary items.

Donations can be dropped into the Reception Office until Tuesday 15 November.

As Term 4 rolls along, teachers are starting to look at class placements for 2023. We would like to take the opportunity to inform you of the process of placing students in classes for next year. Please note that all teachers thoughtfully place students in classes after examination of several factors, which include:

  • Social and emotional information
  • Academic ability
  • Friendship preferences

Current class teachers construct class lists in collaboration with their other year-group teacher(s), often with Specialists too and then class recommendations are forwarded to the Primary leadership team who then review recommendations before final class lists are made.

Please be assured that every decision we make is in the best interests of your child and understand that, while we recognise the uniqueness and preferences of each student, we will not guarantee any promise of preferred placement. We encourage you to trust in the professionalism and dedication of our staff as they consider the many factors in placing your child in a particular class. You will be notified of your child’s teacher in January before them commencing on Monday 30 January 2023.

Yours truly

The Primary Leadership Team

A Night on The Green

As mentioned earlier in Term 3, it is with great excitement that we invite our school community to the inaugural “Night on The Green” on Saturday 3 December from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. If you would like to be involved and give a couple of hours of your time to help on the day, please contact Bronwyn (bronwyn.doak@yahoo.com) or Karen (hinder@internode.on.net ).

This parent led event is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together, but also for everyone to get some Christmas shopping done! Many of our Christmas Market stall holders will have Eftpos machines, however some may only accept cash (something to keep in mind).

Your child/children will be able to get their picture taken in our special Santa’s Grotto this year! A lovely souvenir to share with family and friends. Please note that the photographer in charge will be able to take cash only ($5).

A lot of time and effort has already been invested by parents to ensure that this event is a memorable one for all. We look forward to our community get-together and hope to see you there!

Loud Shirt Day 2022

Exciting news! Loud Shirt Day is fast approaching, we will be celebrating this on Thursday 20 October (week 2 of Term 4).

Loud Shirt Day is the perfect excuse to wear your brightest shirt and get LOUD and PROUD to raise money to help give the gift of sound and speech to deaf children.

This year we are:

  • Inviting the students to wear their loudest shirts for a gold coin donation
  • Having a class
  • ‘Design a Loud Shirt’ competition
  • Celebrating being LOUD with a lunchtime disco in the forum

With thanks from the St Stephen’s TSH team!

Jump Rope for Heart 2022

Jump Rope for Heart is back for Term 4! Jump Rope for Heart is a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program that has been run by the Heart Foundation for over 36 years. It’s a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs. Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $104 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work.

It’s important you register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising, simply follow the link below to get started. www.jumprope.org.au/parents

Students will be practicing their skipping at school and home, and during this time you can share their online fundraising page with family and friends to help raise money for this great cause.

We will hold our school Jump Off Day on Wednesday 16 November (Week 6), and this will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills.

Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!

Virtual Reality First Aid Training

Last Thursday the Carramar  Year 5 and 6 students attended a first aid training program with St John WA. St John WA now provide first aid training using virtual reality. The program means students get the opportunity to experience first aid in a safe and virtual world. Students interact with virtual patients, learn how to provide assistance and call for help.

The students had a lot of fun while acquiring essential first aid skills.

The Power of Speech Competition 2022

On Saturday 10 September the annual Power of Speech competition was held at the Telethon Speech and Hearing centre in Wembley. Three of our students from St Stephen’s took part in the competition Jacob Lloyd, Eamon Doak and Kealan Doak. The competition involved choosing a topic to speak about, writing the speech and lots of practise in preparation. On the day of the competition each of our students stood up on large stage in front of two hundred people and some professional speakers (including Geoff Parry from Channel 7) to deliver their speeches, which was a huge achievement! Our students had an awesome outcome with Eamon and Kealan Doak both winning the trophy for best speaker in their category. Congratulations to all three students, you did a fantastic job!
