Term 4 – Notices – Week 6

Dear Parents,

We have a quiet start with some fun packed days towards the end of the week. On Thursday 19 November, 3-6 are holding a Market Day, so for those students, feel free to bring along some spare change to buy some hand-made items, with all proceeds going to charities. Then on Friday 20 November, there are several events taking place across the Primary school. At the ELC, there is a special Worship for Kindy and Pre Primary students. The Harley Davidson motorbikes are returning this year to collect all the gifts that have been donated for children in foster care this Christmas. Some of our Year 5-6 students will be attending NIPSSA Cricket, whilst all the Year 6 students will be attending the Lightning Carnival, Duncraig v Carramar. Next week, Monday 23 November, there will be a Worship Gathering for Years 3 and 5 and the Primary Choral Festival.

Please read carefully through this Primary blog, and your class blog notices for upcoming events for the rest of the term.

ROADWORKS ON DOVERIDGE DRIVE

We have been advised by the City of Joondalup that necessary asphalt resurfacing works will be taking place on Doveridge Dr from 23 November and should be completed within 8 weeks.  The extent of the work is between Curbur Rd south to Winster Close.

YEARS 3 – 6 Attention Parents who have purchase items from Campion for 2021

It has come to our attention that an item on the Resource list, namely Book Covers – Exercise 9 x 7  Pkt 5, are too small and should be A4 book covers.  If you placed your order with Campion before Friday 6 November, please bring the unopened small book covers to your class teacher on the first day back in 2021 and we will swap these for the correct size.  If you ordered after Friday 6 November, you will have received the correct size.

Thank you for your understanding

ATTENTION: PARENTS

Please ensure all school uniform and other items are clearly labelled.  We still have an ongoing problem of items in lost property with no name label.  This is growing ….. ☹

Thank you for your support in this matter.

Calling for School Banking volunteers – we need your help!

Our current School Banking Coordinators are moving on after years of service to our school community, and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires at least two new volunteer School Banking Coordinators to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards.

It’s easy – and it only takes a small amount of your time one day a week. We can show you the ropes to get you going, and Commonwealth Bank provides support via a helpdesk and dedicated reps.

Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. It is also a rewarding and interactive way to be an active member of the school community.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please visit us during school banking in the primary village (every Thursday from 8am to 9am) or contact Kirsty Pearce on 0404 967 002.

Welcome back to Term 4. The students from Pre Primary to Year 4 have started their swimming lessons well and will continue for the rest of this week. It has been lovely to see their swimming techniques improve and their enjoyment in the water. On Thursday 22 October we have the Synthesis Opening Night 5.00pm – 7.00pm. If you would like to attend this event, please ensure you book a free ticket online to help us monitor attendance numbers. The student’s artwork is being prepared for display and as always there is a wonderful collection of fantastic work. The Year 6 camp to Manjedal is on Wednesday 21 October to Friday 23 October. This is the last Primary camp for our Year 6 student’s before they head to high school. We are sure this will be a memorable time for all of the students.

Resource Lists 2021

We wish to inform you that the 2021 booklists have gone live on the Campion website. For 3-6 this is the same as previous years, but for the ELC there have been some modifications as per the correspondence sent out last Tuesday. Please note that items ticked as “Item Required” on your child’s booklist need to be purchased directly from Campion and it becomes a personal choice to avail any of the other items from Campion or from your preferred stationery shop. The link to the Campion website is: www.campion.com.au and the code to use is 94QP. Once you have logged in, you will be able to see your 2021 year level booklist. Understanding that ‘back to school’ can be an expensive cost to families, our staff have made a conscious effort to keep the cost to a minimum.

Class Placement 2021

As we prepare for 2021 we would like to take the opportunity to inform you of the process of placing students in classes for next year. Please note that all teachers place students in classes after examination of several factors which include:

  • Social and emotional concerns
  • Academic ability
  • Friendship preferences

Current class teachers construct class lists in collaboration with year group teachers and then class recommendations from the teachers are forwarded to the Primary Leadership Team. Jarrod and I then review the recommendations before final class lists are made.

Please be assured that every decision we make is in the best interests of your child and understand that, while we recognise the uniqueness and preferences of each student, we will not guarantee any promise of preferred placement. Please, can I encourage you to trust in the professionalism and dedication of our staff as they consider the many factors in placing your child in a particular class.

You will be notified of your child’s teacher in January before they commence school on Friday 31 January 2020.

Book Week

Please don’t forget that next week is Book Week. Students can dress up as their favourite book character on Thursday 29 October. We will have our Book week parade at 9.00am -9.20 am for the ELC students and 9.30am -10.00am for 3-6. To comply with social distancing protocols and to accommodate our community, we will be parading outside K-Year 2 ELC oval, Years 3-6 on the Primary oval this year. More information will be sent out on your child’s class blog shortly.

Baby News!

We would like to pass on our congratulations to Sarah McGrath, Year 4 teacher, who is pregnant! Her baby is due next year and she is looking forward to spending Term 4 with her class.

Magpies Swooping

Magpies usually breed between August and October every year, and it’s during this time that their protective swooping behaviour is at its peak. Please take care when walking or cycling around the school, particularly around the corner of Doveridge Dr and Curbur Rd, as we have had reports of a magpie swooping in this area.  If possible wear a hat and sunglasses and walk slowly.

Kids In Care Collection

This term, families in our ELC will have the opportunity to select a gift that will be presented to kids in care from the Joondalup Department of Child Protection and Family Support.

Recipients of these gifts will be children who will not have the opportunity to spend Christmas with their own families and, in some cases, have never received a Christmas gift before. Therefore, each ELC family has the opportunity to buy a gift suitable for either a boy or girl in the 1-17 years age range to the value of around $10 – $20. Please do not wrap the gifts as they will be allocated to an appropriate recipient and wrapped by the team at Joondalup Department of Child Protection and Family Support.

Our collection date will close on Friday 20 November.

Many thanks for your attention to this valuable cause that is sure to see many children encouraged and cared for this Christmas.

Term 3 – Week 9 – Notices

Dear Parents,

Well, here we are in the last week of Term 3. What a wonderful term it has been, with numerous camps, carnivals and concerts. We have been blessed with so many opportunities for our students to demonstrate the incredible abilities that they have.

I want to ask you to continue to encourage your children to ‘Stop, Think, Act’, as they find themselves in tough situations. Mr Steven gave a great demonstration of this recently, with a bottle of soft drink representing us in moments that cause us to get a bit shaken up. Of course, the hilarity of Mr Steven and the erupting liquid wasn’t lost on the students, but neither was the message of being able to stop and let ourselves settle before we blow our lids. See if your children can show you the simple actions of ‘Stop, Think, Act’.

As the term wraps up, here are a few events to keep in mind:

Tuesday

NIPSSA Inter School Athletics Carnival 3-6

Wednesday

NIPSSA Inter School Athletics Carnival 3-6

Year 6 Jam Poetry Evening

Thursday

Kaboom Percussion Performances

Friday

ELC Worship Kindy and Pre-Primary

Assembly 4B

End of term 3 – students return Tuesday 13 October

We hope and pray that you have a blessed break with your families and we look forward to seeing all of the students again in Term 4.

Kind regards,

Jarrod Heglund and Hannah Lockwood-Jones

Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, we are unable to invite parents to these performances this year but you can check out some of their videos here:

2020 Interhouse Music Festival

Congratulations to all performers who participated in the Interhouse Music Festival this year. The adjudicators, Hannah Herriman and Marc Osborne, were very impressed with the high standard and variety of performances. We were delighted to see so many brass and woodwind performers, excellent string, guitar and piano playing, some wonderful vocalists, beat boxing, the harmonium and percussionists. There were also some lovely family groups who went to a lot of effort to rehearse and perform together. It was a particular thrill to have several students compose and perform their own music.

The winning house for 2020 was Alethea.

LOST PROPERTY IS GROWING……………………….. THE ITEMS PICTURED BELOW ARE ALL UNNAMED …………………….

WE WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO RETURN ALL LOST ITEMS, PLEASE ASSIST US BY LABELLING EVERYTHING THAT IS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.

Term 3 – Week 8 – Notices

Dear Parents,

Last week there was so much excitement around the Primary school with several events taking place including, the Year 1 camp, the 3 -6 Athletics Carnival and the Primary Choir assembly at the ELC. Thank you to all the parent and community members who supported these events.

Week 8, is another busy week in the Primary School. On Tuesday the Year 2’s will be starting their day at the Primary School (3-6) and will have their French and Music Lessons before returning to the ELC. The Year 5 students will also be holding their Market Day. Students can bring a small amount of change to spend on the wares that are on offer. The week continues to build in excitement for the Year 5 students with their camp commencing on Wednesday. On Friday at ELC, there is a Worship for Year’s 1 and 2 students and parents whilst the Pre Primary classes are having a Marvellous Mixtures Day! There are three camps taking place on this day, for our Year 2 and Year 3’s  and the Year 5’s returning from their camp.

Join us for a Worship Gathering 3-6 on Monday 21 September. Please don’t forget that this day is also Non-Uniform Day. Can students please bring a gold coin donation to support Fruitful Harvest (ELC) and The Falconers & Mon Parker (3-6). More information on these wonderful causes can be found below.

As you can see, we have lots of things happening across the Primary school. However, this year is very different from previous years. Please know that the staff are working very hard to ensure students still have exciting and fun-filled learning activities in place. Any incursions or excursions that have been cancelled this year have been replaced with other activities for the students to enjoy. We are finding it very difficult to rebook some excursions due to limited spaces. As a result, you will see that staff have booked more incursions.

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.

Hannah Lockwood-Jones & Jarrod Heglund

Dear Parents and Care Givers,

In Years 3-6 last week, we had a wonderfully successful Interhouse Music Festival which saw over 100 students demonstrate their musical talents through voice and instrument. Thank you so much to Mrs Thorne and Mrs Elek for organising the whole day. Also, congratulations to Alethea who won the 3-6 portion of the event.

In our Worship and Social/Emotional Learning lessons, we are looking closely at the idea of self-control. Mr Steven is encouraging all of our students to use a traffic light system of “Stop, Think, Act” when they find themselves in situations that cause them to be ‘shaken up’. Feel free to use this same communication with your children at home.

Term 3 – Week 5 – Notices

Dear Parents,

After a busy start to the term, and with many more wonderful events to come, Week 5 is a somewhat ‘relaxed’ week in 3-6 and the ELC. Thank you to those parents who have been able to come to our assembly and worship gatherings – it is great to have you join us again. There are a few notices below that we would love your assistance with, as we continue to enhance learning and keep our community safe.

Community Garden

At the end of Term 2, students and families were encouraged to create plans for a new community garden. Over the school holidays, the veggie space has been overhauled ready for these plans to be implemented. Sarah Mornement has been working hard to ensure the new area offers students the most opportunity to learn and participate. Mrs Mornement has secured a grant for us to purchase busher tucker plants for the community garden. We are also very excited about a ‘yarning circle’ which will be established for children to use. As part of their bush school work, the students are very busy preparing and planting.. We hope that this garden will be an opportunity for parents and students to work together to grow produce. The veggies and busher tucker will be used in the school learning activities, for your homes, and to support our service learning kitchens as they use the produce to prepare food for the disadvantaged.

School Traffic

Over the last week, we have been contacted by several community members who are concerned regarding the speed of traffic in and around the school and the parking of vehicles during pick up periods. As a result, we would kindly ask that all vehicles that enter the school grounds either at the ELC or the Primary School drive slowly adhering to the speed limit signs. Driving at speed through the school is dangerous and unnecessary. We have young children navigating roads around the school who aren’t always clearly visible and/or possess strong road awareness.  If you choose to park and collect your child from school, please ensure that you are parked in a designated parking area. Over the last few weeks, cars have been parked in spaces that have caused traffic congestion or made road use difficult for others. There are no standing spaces around the school for you to wait for your child. Please either use the Kiss and Drive or park your vehicle. We ask that you work with us to ensure all our children are safe as they arrive and leave the school grounds.

Playground use before the end of school

Students at St Stephen’s come from a very large intake area. For this reason, the school has always been happy for the school playgrounds to be used after school for parents and children to catch up and play.  Staff have kindly requested that the playgrounds near classrooms are not used until school has finished. The classroom students become distracted by what is happening outside, as well as siblings at the door, when they are finishing their lessons. If you would like to find an area to play away from classrooms before the school finishes, there is a large oval at the Primary school and a bush area playground at the ELC. Please be aware that all children should be closely supervised by parents and carers after school, and are not to run through, or play in, the buildings.

Book Covering

We have some new books at the ELC that need to be covered. If you are free this Wednesday afternoon, 26 August from 2pm – 3pm, and are able to help out, please come to the ELC staffroom to help cover these new home readers. Biscuits, tea and coffee will be provided.

Yours in service,

Hannah Lockwood-Jones & Jarrod Heglund

Book Fair

Please note that the Upper Primary School (3 – 6)  will be having their Scholastic Book Fair in the week beginning 7 September.

2020 Inter House Athletics Carnival

Tuesday 8 September – jumps, throws, 800m

Thursday 10 September – sprints, team games

Parents can you please read below in preparation for the two day carnival.

URGENT – greater numbers needed due to fewer high school helpers available – please notify me at daniel.parker@ststephens.wa.edu.au if you are able to help with the Tuesday jumps and throws. Help would simply involve measuring with the aid of high school students and a class teacher. There are two sessions – session 1 from 8:35am to 10:40am and session 2 from 11am to 1pm. You can volunteer for one session or both sessions. It will be possible for you to disappear for a moment so that you can witness your child’s efforts in another event.

Please notify me at daniel.parker@ststephens.wa.edu.au if your child is unable to participate on the Thursday sprints and team games day. I am currently trying to create the program and it will save me significant time if I am made aware of any students that will not be participating. Bearing in mind that this is a compulsory event.

*further information will be released once the program is completed
