Term 3 – Week 4 – Notices

Dear Parents and Carers,

The start of this week saw the Year 2 students join the 3 – 6 Worship. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 2 students (and parents) to familiarise themselves the 3 -6 space and learning staff. The students enjoyed the transition experience and are excited to return to the 3 -6 space for their Music and Sports lessons soon.

This week in the Primary School we have several events happening. Pre Primary are celebrating ‘Alphabet Day’ this Friday. Watch their classroom space for lots of letter fun and dress ups! We are very excited to see the Year 1’s joint assembly also this Friday. Parents of Year 1, please come along and join us for this special event. Adding to an exciting week for Year 1 students, there will also an incursion when the Music Man comes to visit. For their camp this year, the Year 4 students will be staying at the zoo. What an exciting opportunity to see the zoo at night and hear the sounds of the nocturnal animals as they go to sleep. Hopefully, the animals don’t keep them awake at night and the teachers and students can get some sleep!

In the next couple of weeks, we have Mr Steven’s Biblical Studies Coffee Morning and the Book Fair, held at 3-6. Please see the post below for more information. For class-specific information please check your child’s class blog.

Have a wonderful week.

Book Fair

Please note that the Upper Primary School (3 – 6)  will be having their Scholastic Book Fair in the week beginning 7 September.

Term 3 – Week 3 – Notices

Dear Parents and Carers,

Well, here we are in Week 3 already! We had a great week last week with our first worship sessions back on for certain year groups, with others having their turn as the rotations progress. Please do feel free to join us for those times, which are Monday morning in Years 3-6 and Friday mornings in the ELC. The roster for the ELC worship and assemblies can be found on your child’s class blog.

Thank you again for taking the time to fill out the survey regarding the online interviews. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will help guide our decisions moving forward.

A Bible passage to think through for the week, that sits beautifully with our school motto ‘Serve God, Serve One Another’, is James 2:15-17 (NIRV) – “Suppose a brother or a sister has no clothes or food. Suppose one of you says to them, “Go. I hope everything turns out fine for you. Keep warm. Eat well.” And suppose you do nothing about what they really need. Then what good have you done? It is the same with faith. If it doesn’t cause us to do something, it’s dead.

Have a wonderful week.

Kind regards,

Jarrod Heglund and Hannah Lockwood-Jones

Dear Parents,

This is just a timely reminder to please drop off and collect your children at suitable times. In the different parts of the Primary School, staff are on duty at slightly different times, supervising the students.  Please familiarise yourselves with the relevant information below.

ELC

There are no staff on duty before 8:15am.

Please note that OSH Club is available for all Primary students at the ELC, for before school and after school care. Their website is www.oshclub.com.au

YEARS 3-6

There are no staff on duty before 8:10am. Students who arrive between 8am and 8:10am may sit quietly in the Library. If at all possible, we would appreciate students arriving at school after 8:10am as we are unable to offer supervision until then. In the afternoon, staff are on duty from 3:10pm – 3:30pm. To ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children, we ask that students are collected before 3:30, or that parents are present after 3:30pm to provide supervision.

Thank you for your kind consideration in this regard.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school provides data to the Australian Government – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information regarding the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data school students with disability, please visit: NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

This is a national fact sheet about the NCCD for parents, guardians and carers.

Term 3 – Week 2 – Notices

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a wonderful start to Semester 2 we have had, as school continues to return to ‘normal’. We had a very successful round of online parent/teacher interviews on Reporting Day last week and we thank you for filling out the survey to give us feedback on the process. If you haven’t done so yet, please feel free to do so, before the end of Friday this week.

Last term, Mr Steven had been creating wonderful worship sessions for us to engage with, via video, but we are happy to be able to have started our worship gatherings again – with a little difference. At the moment, we are alternating fortnightly between Years 3 and 5 one week, and Years 4 and 6 on the following week. The ELC worship dates are Kindy and Pre Primary on 28 August and 25 September, with Years 1 and 2 worship on 14 August and 18 September. We would love to have parents re-join us for the worship mornings. On a similar note, we will be re-starting our class assemblies, with a similar (but different) rotation of which classes do come to the assemblies. With the lower student numbers, we have space for parents of the Year group hosting the assembly to join us for those events too.

The worship assembly this morning at 3-6 was also the first opportunity that our brand new, Semester 2 Primary House Captains had to address the other students.

Our new captains are:

  • ALETHEA – Charlotte Caldwell and James Hussey
  • CARANA – Beau Turner and Daniel Lynn
  • TIMAE – Caitlyn Britton and Tyson Jones

They are a great group of students who have already started making a positive impact on the school. We are looking forward to a great semester with them in their leadership positions. If you see them around, please congratulate them.

This week is Languages Week and we are encouraging all of our students to share the wide variety of language that they bring to our school community. You might see students around the school this week wearing small tags that indicate languages that they are fluent in and those that they only speak a little bit of. There are also other activities throughout the week, so be sure to ask your child about those.

Staff news:

  • For those of you who may not be aware, Mrs Blake is only a few weeks away from starting her maternity leave with the birth of her first child. This is very exciting! Through this, we are also welcoming Mrs Sarah McGrath back to the school from her own maternity leave to take over the Year 4 class.
  • Also returning from maternity leave is Mrs Jenna Dadley, who will be continuing to work with the Learning Enrichment team, one day per week in Year 5.
  • We would like to pass on our congratulations to Madame Penin who recently became and Australian citizen. She was very excited and we were truly happy to be able to share that excitement with her last week.

As we close, we just wanted to reinforce what Mr Steven shared this morning in worship – every single one of us is made beautifully by God. Psalm 139:14 says “How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well.” I encourage you to go and read all of Psalm 139 as it is full of sincere reflection on how much God truly knows you and loves you.

God bless

HEART FOR THE HOMELESS

St Stephen’s School has partnered with 98.5 Sonshine FM for their Heart for The Homeless Appeal this month to keep everyone warm on these cold winter nights. We are one of the drop-off points for any clean sleeping bags, blankets, toiletries and pillows that will go to those doing it tough. Do your bit and drop off at the Duncraig Campus from July 20 and at the Carramar Campus from July 27 until the end of the month.

Children’s University

To students who have already joined Children’s University, or are thinking of joining Children’s University this year:

To join, please bring your EXACT payment ($27.50) and permission slip for your ‘Passport to Learning’ to the Primary Office. You will be issued with a passport. From there, come and see Miss Denham in the village from 8am – 8:30am every Tuesday.

When you visit Miss Denham, you can collect forms or ‘reviews’ to fill out. These reviews let Miss Denham know about the external learning activities you are involved in. You might fill in details about what skills or new facts you learnt during your activity. Once complete, come back on another Tuesday with your passport and Miss Denham will look over your forms and stamp your hours in your passport.

If you’d like some information on certified learning destinations, these are on the Children’s University Perth website. These are places you can visit, bring your passport and get it stamped there and then. If you’re planning to visit somewhere that’s not already certified, you can grab a review form from Miss Denham before you go and fill it in about your visit (or you can also get one afterwards).

You do not need to come and see Miss Denham every Tuesday morning, it is just when you would like to receive some forms or log some hours.

Some examples of the forms you can receive are:

  • Team sport clubs
  • Individual sport clubs
  • Dance lessons
  • Singing/music lessons
  • Visit diaries (for day-visit locations)
  • Surf life saving
  • Swimming club
  • Volunteering
  • Gymnastics
  • Girl guides
  • Scouts
  • Martial arts

Your passport must only be stamped by either Miss Denham or a staff member at a registered learning journey. I look forward to seeing some new faces on Tuesdays!

2020 Inter House Cross Country

A huge congratulations to all students that participated in today’s Primary Cross Country. There were many students that worked extremely hard and deserve high praise for their efforts. Endurance events grow great resilience. An outstanding character trait!

This year we altered the scoring system to align with the inter-school scoring technique. First place is awarded one point, second place receives two points and so on. The lowest team score is the winning score. There was also modification to alleviate issues with imbalances in House participation numbers.

The final results were as follows:

2nd Alethea – 816

3rd Carana – 1085

PARENT HELPERS NEEDED FOR CHICKENS

We would love to have chickens in our chicken coop again. In order for this to happen we need to make sure that they are cared for adequately. This just means that we are looking for parent volunteers to help look after some new chickens – possibly arriving in Term 3. This could require some help with caring for them (although this will mostly be done by staff and students), but mostly with coming into school to check on them over the weekend and with re-homing them during the school holidays.

If this is something that you believe you could help with, please email Jarrod on jarrod.heglund@ststephens.wa.edu.au

With the Theatre out of action amid the COVID-19 pandemic, our Performing Arts teams are excited to announce a new production like no other. The Show Must Go Online is a virtual production filmed by and starring our students from Carramar and Duncraig, and will be available to broadcast straight to your living room! Stay tuned for sneak peeks and insights from the cast before the show premieres on Thursday 6 August, 2020. Read more about the production on PerthNow: https://bit.ly/3f9Oi0S

ELC Drop-off Arrangements

Dear Parents,

It was lovely to see so many of you coming in to school today and taking your children to their classes. The children enjoyed playing outside, and parents were able to catch up too. Some parents have asked if we will be continuing with the previous drop-off arrangements. We are pleased to advise that as restrictions have been lifted and parents can come on site, we have returned to the drop off arrangements that have been in place at the ELC for some time.

  • Parents can come on-site and take their children to their external classroom door.  Social distancing should be practised at all times.
  • There will no longer be a team of people to collect students from their car. This was put in place as parents were not able to come on-site. Unfortunately, this is not a viable option for staff to maintain on a long-term basis, but we so enjoyed greeting the students each morning.
  • As was done previously, you will need to assist your child coming into the gate area from the car. We have one staff member on duty from 8.20 – 8.35 am, supervising the play area and being on hand for the students and parents. Before 8.20am staff at the ELC have morning meetings. If you need your child supervised before 8.20am, please contact OSH Club for before and after school child care service availability.
  • All students can play outside with parent supervision until the class doors open at 8.35 am. Students who have a texpert or art role can come into the building prior to 8.35am.
  • If your child requires a quick transition when leaving you to the classroom, we suggest that you come on site with your child or arrive when the class doors have been opened.
  • If your child arrives late to school, or has to leave early during the school day, please sign in/out at the Administration Office

As per the email that was sent out to you on Friday, the ELC pick-up procedure this has been slightly modified to ensure social distancing between adults. To assist this, we will be organising our pick up a little differently for the time being. If you wish to collect your child from school there will be set doors allocated where students from each year group will be. A teacher will be located at the door and will call your child out to you.

– Pre Primary to be collected from the Administration area

– Year 1 to be collected from 2C classroom

– Year 2 to be collected from 2K classroom

The current drop-off and pick up arrangements will continue for Kindy students.

Thank you for your compliance to these new measures and for ensuring the safety and care of our community.

Deputy Head of Primary

When ordering, please make sure that you select the correct campus for the books to be delivered to, either:

St Stephen’s School ELC

St Stephen’s School Carramar

Closing date of Friday 5 June

Good afternoon,

With the wet weather setting in, we have noticed more parents driving their children to and from school. The increased number of people on the roads can result in some traffic standstills in the turning circle and we just wanted to remind parents to be mindful of the staggered School finishing times for Primary and Secondary, who both use the turning circle, and how to aid the flow of traffic on and outside our campus.

  • Please note, Primary students finish at 3.10pm, pick up their bags and there usually isn’t too much of a delay from the end of class to them waiting for their parents at pick-up. We ask that Primary parents try not to drive into the campus before 3.05pm to ensure the traffic doesn’t get backed up for too long.
  • Secondary students finish their last class at 3.20pm. They then need to return to their locker before coming out to the car so there is usually around a five-minute lag before they get to the turning circle. Therefore, we ask that parents of Secondary students please do not drive into the campus until 3.20pm for pick-up.
  • We have noticed many parents arriving too early and parking in the turning circle to wait, which blocks Primary parents from getting through and also visitors from backing out of the visitors parking bays. Please refrain from coming onto campus too early and parking in the flow area.

We thank you for your understanding and know that we ask this to minimise the time you spend in the traffic, to ensure the safety of students and also to prevent any parking fines for those stuck in traffic on the surrounding streets.

Thank you for your support.

Primary 3 to 6:

Ms Teh – Maternity leave

I am sure that many of you have now heard the exciting news that Ms Teh along with her husband Nik and daughter Nina are expecting their second child next month!

We wanted to let you know that while Ms Teh is away on Maternity leave she has several amazing musicians who will be looking after our students involved in the String Program. Mr Scott and Mrs Kovic will be rehearsing the Primary School and Middle School Orchestras while she is away.  Ms Teh’s individual string students will be taught by Mrs Kovic and Mrs Washborne and we would like to introduce Miss Hannah Herriman who will also be teaching some of Ms Teh’s students and directing the High School Orchestra.

We wish Ms Teh all the best for her Maternity eave and I know we will all be looking forward to seeing photos of her new baby!

We are very grateful for the dedication Ms Teh has shown to St Stephen’s School by nurturing our String Program since 2004 and we will be welcoming her back with open arms in 2021!

Inter House Primary Cross Country

The rescheduled date for our primary (3-6) school cross country will be Friday 19 June (week 8).

Unfortunately there are three restrictions that will change the way the cross country is run this year due to COVID 19.

1.       The course must be contained within the school boundaries – therefore the courses will be altered from previous years. Distances will still be the same for each year group. Year 3 – 1500m, Year 4 – 2000m, and Year 5 and 6 – 2500m. Once I have determined the courses for each year group, maps will be created and students will have the opportunity to physically move through the course in preparation before the race day.

2.       Students will come out to participate only in their year group and gender. A gathering of all students to spectate and support will not be possible. Details of when student year groups race will be released soon.

3.       Parents will be unable to spectate. I know that it may be possible to witness the races from the car park or verge, however as a school we are unable to endorse this behaviour as it would be in violation of government rulings placed on schools.

TRAINING –  for all who are interested. There will be training and preparation sessions on Wednesday and Friday lunch times starting this week. Students that do not have PE on those days are asked to change into sports uniform for the training sessions. Notification of training will be made over the PA system before the lunch break.

The Inter School Cross Country will no longer be held this year, however we are hopeful that perhaps the State Cross Country will be held on Thursday 30 July for students that achieve highly at the inter house level.
