As we enter the final weeks of term, there are lots of events happening this week, it is pleasing to see that things are not slowing down. The next two weeks promise to be just as exciting and engaging for all of our students. It is an exciting week ahead for the 3-6 students as they compete in the Inter House Athletic Carnival. These are always great community days and we look forward to seeing you there. We wish all houses the very best for this week’s competition. There is also a lot happening at the ELC as the students enjoy a range of activities, ending with the Year 1 camp on Friday. As always, please ensure you are up to date with what is happening with your child via the class blog.

Dogs at the ELC

We have seen an increase in dogs being brought to the ELC over this year. Last week there was an incident with a dog off a leash. No dogs are to be brought inside the gates of the ELC. We have several students with allergies and also some children who are frightened of dogs. We kindly ask that if you do bring a dog to the ELC they remain outside our perimeter fence.

Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

Year 2 Transition

On Monday, the Year 2 students are to be dropped off at 3-6 in the morning. They will be greeted by their class teachers. Our Year 2 students will then be attending Worship followed by a special introduction to possible instruments they can choose next year as part of the music program. After these two special events staff and students will return to the ELC.

I would also like to draw your attention to R U OK? Day on Thursday 14 October. A national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and support those struggling with life.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead

ELC

What a week. Swimming and our Father’s Day and special guest celebrations. Thank you so much to all staff and students at the ELC. The swimming lessons have gone well last week, and our end of week event was a great success.

3-6

Over at 3-6, PAT testing is taking place for Years 3-5 this week. Some of our students have shown a wonderful initiative in setting up a ‘Piggle Wiggle’ enterprise. The children have set this up as a way of fundraising for sensory resources. A wonderful idea!

There is also a Beyblades tournament being organised. The Captains have agreed to take this on and run it as their Wednesday Friends Day program, until the end of the year. They will talk with the students about this and provide further information soon.

Drop Off and Pick Up Traffic

Please be mindful of students walking to and from cars at drop off and pick up times particularly on the verge area on Doveridge Drive. We ask that you drive slowly and with care in and around the school grounds to keep our community safe.

That’s all from ELC and 3-6 for this week. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

God Bless

Term 3 – Notices – Week 6

Book Week is always an exciting week and last week was no exception, especially on Friday seeing the children all dressed up. Thank you to all the parents and carers who put in the time and effort to help your child with their costume.

We also had an Indigenous Elder visit both the ELC and 3-6 spaces last week. Derek Nannup came into school to teach the children about indigenous culture. This was hugely informative and engaging and it was great to see how much the students were able to take from it.

A huge congratulations to all students and staff on the wonderful Primary Seussical performances this week. Our Year 5 and 6 students have all worked incredibly hard to memorise lines, songs, positions, and dances under the incredible guidance of Miss Jessica O’Connor and Mrs Sonya Elek. Staff, parents, and students across Primary, thank you all for your time, flexibility and creativity in assisting with props, costumes and backstage supervision. Not only did we see the student’s creativity on stage by also through the beautiful artwork and props that filled the foyers, graced the stage, and were displayed in our classroom. It is clear we have many talented students. It was wonderful to see all students perform so well. We are certainly very proud of every student. Truly outstanding! A standing ovation to everyone.

Last week at the ELC we had a couple of major events alongside the other exciting things that were happening in each classroom! A huge thank you to our High School students from Year 9 who came over in the bad weather to spend time with ELC students. The Year 2’s thoroughly enjoyed their time with their buddies, exploring board games and spending time with our older students.

Last Friday as part of the lead up to Book Week, students from PP to Year 2 had an incursion. As always, it was full of fun and lots of audience participation. There are some wonderful books nominated for this year’s awards. We continually encourage students to explore a wide range of reading material, and this is just one of many methods we use to foster curiosity and reading.

After a very exciting week last week, we wish you a wonderful week ahead.

God Bless

Thursday 10 August – Kindy Pyjama Day

Friday 11 August – Worship

3-6

7-11 August – Year 3 & 4 Swimming Lessons

This week continues to be full of activity and events, and it is wonderful to see the enthusiasm among the children.

Musical

Our Year 5 and 6 students are furiously rehearsing for the musical performances next week, and things are really starting to take shape.

Your child should be coming home with their Seussical T-shirt today, if they ordered one. We are happy for the T-shirts to be worn at school from Wednesday, until the end of the performances (with the exception of the days they are washed), if they wish. If your child does wear the T-shirt, please ensure they wear their PE uniform to accompany the shirt. If they do not wear the T-shirt, students must wear the standard uniform, as usual.

Use of devices outside of learning

We would like to remind you that, although we do allow students to wear smart watches, in school, they must be disconnected and not used for any form of communication during school hours. Can we please ask that you support your children with this by disconnecting the device during the day, as the capacity for this to be used can be a little too tempting for some.

Equally, we do understand that some children use their watches or even phones to communicate with you at the end of the school day, when being picked up. If this is the case, the watches must be disconnected until the end of the school day and phones must be turned off and kept in the child’s bag.

A message from the school nurse

We wish to inform you that head lice have been found within Year 3.

To assist in limiting the spread, can you please check your child’s hair tonight and treat if necessary.

For more information on how to treat head lice please go to the Department of Health’s website at;

www.healthywa.health.wa.gov.au/Articles/F_I/Head-lice

Class Placement 2024

As we prepare for 2024, we would like to take the opportunity to inform you of the process we use when placing students in their classes for next year. Please note that all teachers place students after examination of several factors which include:

Social and emotional concerns
Friendship preferences
Academic ability
Staff observations
Your child’s current class teachers construct their class lists in collaboration with their partner year group teacher(s), Learning Assistants and Specialist Teachers. Where possible, the teaching staff will provide experiences for students to interact across the classes to also observe student interactions with students not currently in their class.

Once the teachers have completed their class list recommendations, they are forwarded on to the Primary Leadership Team to be reviewed.

The process of creating class lists is done carefully and over a period of time. Please be assured that every decision we make is in the best interests of your child and understand that, while we recognise the uniqueness and preferences of each student, we will not guarantee a preferred placement.

Please, can we encourage you to trust in the professionalism and dedication of our staff as they consider the many factors in placing your child in a particular class and not make requests for preferred class placements for your child.

You will be notified of your child’s teacher in January 2024 before they commence school in 2024.

Kind regards,

Andrew Johnston & Hannah Lockwood-Jones

Long Jump, Turbo Javelin and Shot Put Practice

All students from year 3 to 6 are welcome to attend extra jumps and throws practices on Friday mornings before school in term 3. These sessions will provide extra opportunity to prepare for the school carnival and if selected, the inter school competition. The sessions will be held at Hamer Oval(high school oval) from 7:45a to 8:15a. The sessions will be on the following dates;

Friday 11 August(week 3)

Friday 18 August(week 4)

*no week 5 due to book week parade

Friday 1 September(week 6)

Friday 8 September(week 7)

If there are any Parent’s available, I would appreciate help with monitoring long jump and turbo javelin. Please let me know at daniel.parker@ststephens.wa.edu.au if you are able to help.

State Cross Country

I would like to thank all of the students that represented St Stephen’s at the School Sport WA, cross country championships. In what is always a tough physical challenge, our students showed outstanding strength of character. Of course, the challenge is not simply the day of the race but also the exhausting and sometimes painful training sessions. Another huge challenge is also that some races have fields of competitors in excess of 300. Well done to the following students that managed to finish within the top 100 which is no easy feat. A special mention for Joshua Coetzer and Fraser Strudwick who both earned invitations to state team trials.

A few messages from the Deputies:-

Drop off and Pick Up

ELC  – We have seen an increase in the number of people parking in the Kiss and Drive area between 8.00am – 8.50am. This is making the road area inside the ELC very congested during the morning. It is also unsafe for our students who are exiting their vehicles further away from the gate area and to walk independently alongside the road. Please do not park in this area during this time.

A gentle reminder to all drivers collecting students from the Kiss and Drive area after school to not exit their vehicle. All children using the Kiss and Drive must be independent in entering their vehicle and securing themselves in the seat. If the driver is needing to assist the child, then the vehicle should be parked, and the student collected from their class teacher. Due to the number of vehicles using this facility and to support the movement of traffic, the driver must remain at the wheel.

3-6 – There have been people parking in the staff parking area early in the morning. This has meant that there have been a number of parking bays unavailable to staff. Can we please kindly ask that you do not park in this area. Many of our staff come to school with additional resources. Parking with close proximity to the school enables ease of transportation of resources and teaching items.

ELC Father and Special Guest day

We have received correspondence regarding an alteration to our ELC Father and Special Guest event being moved to the afternoon.

We had to amend our original plans after recently receiving our allocation of swimming lessons for the ELC. Unfortunately, we are not able to stipulate the swimming lesson time and dates.  Lesson allocation is set by an external government run program. This year, the allocation has come at one of the busiest times of year for the ELC with numerous events happening.

Rather than cancel swimming lessons or Father and Special Guest event, we have decided to proceed with both . This was after much conversation and consultation with staff. Due to a number of constraints the only option we had was to run the Father and Special Guest event in the afternoon, after the morning swimming lessons have been completed.

We understand this is a change to our initial timing but hope that the early notification provided to parents and guardians will enable people to attend. This is an event well-loved by the students and community. It would have been such a shame to cancel it.

All decisions we make regarding our events and activities, take into consideration a range of factors. Please know that we work hard to ensure that we are offering the best we can for our students and community.

We are so grateful to the staff for their willingness to run the swimming lessons, this event and many other events scheduled for this term.

Our Community

Last week’s blog celebrated our school community. Many new families positively feedback that our community is the difference compared to other schools. A special thank you to the Parent Reps and families that continually look to support and care for our new and existing members of our community.

Occasionally, there may be a bump in relationships. Continually seek to find a resolution through kindness and care. Rarely do people set out to cause upset but it can happen as we travel life together and opinions differ, or actions offend. Always speak directly to the person if differences emerge. Never share disgruntled feelings in the car park, awaiting pick up or over social media. Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

We want our children to show unity, acceptance, and support for each other, as modelled by our community.

After a busy semester full of learning, fun and events, we wish you a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you all next semester.

Term 2 – Week 9 – Notices

Welcome to Week 9 of Term 2.

When we reflect on the semester there is so much for us to be grateful for:-

The fantastic students and what each one brings to our community.
Our families and their commitment and support to the school.
The staff and their dedication to continually go above and beyond to do their very best.
The learning that has taken place and the foundations that are being laid for the future.
Our wonderful Admin team who help us throughout the day, keep the school running and the students well looked after.
Our executive board as they guide and lead us.
The well known ancient African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” is certainly lived out at our school. The partnerships between us all, are and will continue to be, the basis of our community. We continue to work together to build and support the students as they grow and learn.

Thank you so much, parents and guardians, for your continued support.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

ELC Non-Uniform Day Monday 26 June

Year 1 have been researching endangered Australian animals, in particular the numbat and the western swamp tortoise.  Year 1’s have been so moved by the plight of these special WA animals that they have asked Mrs Lockwood Jones if the money collected in the upcoming free dress day can be donated to accompanying charities.

They have created posters to help further spread awareness as they endeavour to ‘take action’. These can be seen throughout the ELC.

Thank you for your support in their efforts.
