It has been wonderful to see all of the students who have participated in Harmony Day today by dressing in orange. All students have taken part in activities that promote the incredible diversity of our community and country. Thank you for all you have done to support the school as we celebrate diversity. I encourage you to ask your child about the amazing things they have done today.

Covid 19 related updates

Thank you to all of you who have notified us of any Covid related issues that your child or family have been involved in. Please continue to email us at covidcommunications@ststephens.wa.edu.au with any changes to your circumstances.

We will continue to provide updates on cases within the school through the portal. This will be updated every weekday at 3pm.

The isolation learning tab in the blog will continue to provide learning for any student who is not able to attend school but is well enough to learn.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

We are also really pleased with the students in Years 3 – 6 wearing facemasks. This has been a challenge, but the students are continuing to respond really well. Thank you for providing a spare mask in your child’s bag. This is proving really useful for students when their mask is either lost or broken.

Before school

We are noticing a large number of students are arriving at school early. Some as early as 7.30am. Please note that we do not provide duty for students until 8.15am in ELC and 8.10am in 3 – 6, when a duty teacher comes out. Our staff at participating in devotions, worship and parent interviews from 8.00am -8.15am

Covid 19 related updates

As you are aware, the advice and guidance around what to do if you are a close contact, household contact or if you have a positive covid-19 result changed towards the end of last week.

Should any further changes occur, we will continue communicate any information that is relevant to the school context as soon as we are able through the centralised email. This is to ensure that the information shared is clear and transparent across the whole school.

For updates on cases within the school, please continue to view the portal. This will be updated every weekday at 3pm.

If you need to contact the school to notify us of any covid related matters that have impacted your children, please email covidcommunications@ststephens.wa.edu.au

The isolation learning tab in the blog will continue to provide learning for any student who is not able to attend school but is well enough to learn.

Face Masks

Thank you for all your support by ensuring the mask mandate is followed for students in Years 3 – 6. The students have been diligently wearing them when inside at school for just over a week now and we have been working hard with them to ensure they wear them correctly at all times. All students have responded well and have got better and better each day.

Could we please ask that all students bring a spare mask in their bag each day? A large number of students have either lost or broken their masks throughout the day and we have been happy to provide spares when this has happened, but our supplies are starting to run low.

The Next Two Weeks

Thank you for all you do and for your continued support to the St Stephen’s community.

Term 1 – Notices – Week 6

We hope this post finds all of you safe and well.

Like everywhere else in WA, COVID-19 seems to be the dominant topic of conversation in our school at the moment and we have had to navigate positive cases in school and the introduction of facemasks for students in Years 3 – 6.

We are extremely grateful for the way you have supported your children and the school during periods of isolation and with the facemasks we have received some really positive comments, as well as some really valuable and constructive feedback too. Thank you for all you have done to help us in this space.

Can I ask that you continue to support us by keeping your children at home if they are unwell or running a temperature. If they are unwell and you have taken the precautionary measure giving them a RAT test, which has returned a negative result and you have then brought them into school, we would be very grateful if you let us know. That way, if we see they have any mild symptoms, we will know they have returned a negative result and won’t necessarily contact you to collect your child.

Since the start of this year, the teaching staff have seen a steady increase of emails from you, asking questions and passing on various bits of information. We completely understand that not being able to speak with teachers face to face at the moment is a key reason for this. However, over the last week, we saw a huge increase in emails, which in some cases were unmanageable for teachers to respond to, while also teaching, planning and preparing isolation learning packs.

Could we please ask that you follow the protocols for parent to teacher emails sent out last year. To refresh your memory, please see the protocols at the bottom of this post.

Thank you again for all of your continued support.

Kind Regards

Andrew Johnston and Hannah Lockwood-Jones

And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ Philippians 4:7

Protocols for parent-to-teacher emails

To support our community and especially our teaching staff we would like to set the following protocols when using emails:

  • Please keep all email short and to the point. Dot points are helpful.
  • Emails are used to confirm appointments or a predetermined course of action.
  • Emails can be used to ask a question.

Emails should not be used:

  • To complain about an issue.
  • To share complex and detailed information, this should be communicated in a pre-set meeting.
  • To follow up on an incident at school – please allow your child to use their voice and advocate for themselves. We do teach students how to do this and students are encouraged to find an adult whom they trust to share any problems they are having at school and discuss a plan of action.
  • Emails should be kept to a minimum and it would be helpful if this mode of communication could be kept between 8am and 4pm. If an email needs to be written at night, please draft these to be sent only between office hours. In this way our teachers can enjoy a restful evening at home with their families.

Can you help the Mowamjum Aboriginal Community make hill trolleys??

We are seeking donations of old bike helmets, knee and elbow pads to assist the students in Mowamjum community to experience the thrill of hill trolleys.

No hills in Mowamjum!!

It doesn’t matter, they have that covered, all they need is the resources.

Please donate if you have any of the above items at home and you are no longer using them.

Donations can be given to your child’s teacher for collection.

Dear Parents and Guardians

A big part of St Stephen’s School’s holistic education is about preparing our students for the world beyond School. Whether it be via an academic pathway or vocational route, we work closely with each student to understand their interests and strengths and guide them toward success.

Last year we reached out to our parent community asking for support with our Career Expo, Career Conversations and Work Experience and many of you volunteered your time and expertise, which was fantastic. I would like to extend the same invitation again this year. Would you be willing to be involved any of the following:

  • Presenting to a group of students about your job/industry
  • Providing Work Experience placements for our students – one day a week or a one week placement
  • Chatting to students about your career pathway at our Career Conversations event in November

Specific details are included below. If you would like to volunteer to be involved in any of the above, or would like to chat about any further opportunities for our students, please get in touch with our Careers Adviser, Sarah Cooke at sarah.cooke@ststephens.wa.edu.au. We would love to hear from you.

Term 1 – Notices – Week 5

Dear Parents and Community,

This week’s blog post has some important information about ways in which we are supporting students during a time of increased COVID numbers across the state. Please take the time to read through the email.

New Restrictions

The WA Government have just announced that, as of this Thursday, March 3, the State will move to Level 2 restrictions. These restrictions include students from Year 3 and above wearing masks. From Thursday, we ask that students in these year groups remember to bring their masks with them to school. We have some extra masks available for those who may forget but it is not an endless supply. The Premier has stated these measures should only be in place for a short time – possibly around four weeks – and will be reviewed at the end of the month.

Students in Isolation

Should your child need to isolate due to having COVID or being a close contact, we will be providing some activities for them to complete. These activities can be found via the newly installed  ‘Isolated Learning Tab’ on your child’s class blog. There will be a range of activities which will include English and Maths. Please know that these activities are optional. If your child is unwell there is no expectation from the school for these activities to be completed. The Education Department has made it clear that as soon as children are well and out of their isolation period they should return to school.

Class Isolation

If a whole class is required to be in isolation, that class will be moved to an online learning platform. Students will access their learning via the “Online Learning’ tab on their class blog. It is essential that you have downloaded TEAMs and are logged in using your child’s username and password. This information has been provided via a ‘noreply’ email from the school on 11 February at 4pm to the primary contact as noted in SEQTA.

Unwell Children

If your child is unwell please do not send them to school as they will be sent home.

Contacting Teachers

Please be aware our staff are currently receiving a huge increase in emails. Due to the increased numbers of emails staff are responding to, we ask for patience in receiving a reply. Staff are unable to offer health guidance for your child. Information regarding current Covid isolation and contact requirements can be found on the WA Health website.

We understand that there is a lot of information to take in as you receive increased amounts of communication from the school. The team are trying hard to ensure that only essential information is being sent out to our community. Due to continual changes in restrictions and case numbers levels in the state, the school needs to be agile and make necessary changes or adaptions to ensure that we keep the community informed and safe.

As our State navigates the weeks ahead, please pray for our government leaders, health practitioners, students, community, teachers and school leaders.

We wish you and your family the very best.

St Stephen’s Primary – World’s Greatest Shave 2022

There are many worthwhile causes to support throughout the year and this is one that I would like to draw attention to. In 2014, my then three year old daughter was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Thanks to a privileged medical system and God’s mercy, my daughter is now fit and well. She is in her sixth year since treatment finished and her recovery has been very positive.

Throughout that treatment period and even beyond, the support for families dealing with blood cancers has been amazing. Fundraising initiatives like the Greatest Shave helped our family through a difficult time of our lives. We are extremely grateful to all of the selfless people who have generously given to this cause.

To further the cause, I would like to support the World’s Greatest Shave at St Stephen’s School. For those interested in supporting this fundraising effort, these are the details…

  1. Our Greatest Shave Day will be held on Friday 8 April(last day of term 1)
  2. Participating on the day can be done in the following ways
  1. Register online with parent permission (parents please email me at daniel.parker@ststephens.w.aedu.au to express consent), fundraise and then have hair shaved or cut (you must be registered and have sent in parental permission and fundraised to do the shave or cut)(some students like to participate by cutting off their pony tail)
  2. Don’t register online, but still colour your hair at home or wear a wig and then bring a donation on the day
  1. Students/staff/parents can support by giving online or registering as a participant at the link below

https://secure.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?TeamID=135432

*Under the red box saying “donate our team”, in little text it says “or sign up and join our team” – click on that to join.

I am fully aware that there are many worthwhile causes to support, so please do not feel any obligation to give to this fundraising, but of course we welcome it if you are willing and able.

Term 1 – Notices – Week 4

Good Afternoon,

We are in full swing all across the primary school at the moment but in all the busyness for the term, it is always great to be able to stop, reflect upon the weeks that have gone and become excited for the amazing things we have to look forward to.

The situation with covid continues to dominate our attention and whenever there are new announcements, we need to take time to consider the implications that it may have on the day to day routines of the school. Please know that we will continue to share all updates and changes with you as they occur and rest assured, the safety and wellbeing of the staff and students in school will remain our highest priority.

Psalm 46:10  “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Last week, our year six students, and staff enjoyed the surfing lessons over at Trigg beach. The students were a credit to our school and to you both in the behaviour and enthusiasm. This week, our year five students will start their lessons. For some this may be the first time they have surfed and we look forward to seeing them embracing the challenge in the same manner.

Equally, to continue the aquatic theme for this blog, our kindy students have been really enjoying the water play options on these hot, sunny days.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the week. Please catch up with your child’s class blog this Friday to see what has been happening in class and any essential information that may be needed for the coming week.

Kind regards

Andrew Johnston & Hannah Lockwood-Jones

2022 Inter House Swimming Carnival – UPDATED

Our swimming carnival scheduled for Friday 11 March at Arena Joondalup has now been cancelled due to COVID restrictions. We now have a confirmed booking with Craigie Leisure Centre for use of their 8 lane outdoor pool on FRIDAY 25 MARCH. At this stage, the use of the outdoor pool will allow us to comply with government regulations. However, as everyone is aware, government regulations regarding COVID are constantly evolving and it is possible that this alternative may also be restricted. Unfortunately, even if the carnival is allowed to continue in the outdoor pool, parent attendance will not be allowed. We are hopeful though that some concessions can be made as the functioning of the event relies on parent assistance.

Any students that are yet to submit their nomination form, please do so.

Online Teaching and Learning

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you are aware, we do not usually post on the Duncraig Primary Blog on a Friday. We are posting today as important information has been emailed to you regarding Microsoft Teams. Please take the time to read through this email. We will be utilising Microsoft Teams for part of our online teaching and learning should the need arise. Information on how to download Microsoft Teams, can be found on the link below. Your student password will be provided separately in an email from the school.

If you require any help, please contact the I.T. parent helpline on 9243 2160.

Term 1 – Notices – Week 3

Dear Parents and Carers,

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

As we navigate changes, this verse is a timely reminder for us to place our trust in God, a firm foundation and anchor in uncertain times. It is easy to allow fear to creep in, but the Bible reminds us that God is in control. For that reason, we should trust in Him and consistently communicate with Him.

On behalf of all our staff, we would like to thank you for your support and patience as we navigated changes this week. We so appreciate you working with us as we made adjustments based on government advice. The teachers and students are finding different ways to share their learning with you. Filming of class assemblies has begun, we look forward to sharing this with you.

We have noticed a growing number of students being dropped off early to school. Please be aware that all staff attend Devotions/Worships from 8.05am, three times a week. On days when there are no devotions or worship, staff often have meetings they attend or use this time to prepare resources for the day. At both the ELC and 3-6 supervision starts from  8.15 am. As parents and carers are still welcome to come on school grounds with their children, there will be no additional supervision in place prior to the classroom doors opening. Classroom doors open at 8.35am. If you need to drop your child off outside of school hours, OSH is available. Parents and carers are kindly asked to social distance and wear masks (unless exempt) whilst on the school grounds. Once your child has entered the classroom or been picked up we ask that you move on from the school grounds.

Please take note of the following events that are taking place this week at both the ELC and 3-6. More information about these events can be found on your class blog.

Term 1 – Notices – Week 2

Good Afternoon,

It was lovely to have now completed a full week with our students here at the school and to be able to see some great friendships between our students already beginning to form. We are now in full swing and the momentum we are gathering is really positive. A huge thank you to all you are doing as parents to contribute to this supportive community.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Last week it was fantastic to see the students adapt to their new classes and routines very well. There is still a lot of excitement around what this year holds and as we look over the next few weeks, there is a lot to be excited about.

You will see that communication has been sent out by the school explaining some of the changes we have been advised to make to restrict the possibility of covid transition within our school. Below we have detailed the three most pressing changes to everyday school life in the primary school.

  • Sadly we had to place our multi-year level worship gatherings on hold. These sessions will now be run in the classrooms without parents present. We love welcoming our community to join us at this time and look forward to a time in the future when we can do this again.
  • Our Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 parent information sessions will still go ahead. We are very glad that we can continue to hold this meeting. However, can we please ask that students do not attend if at all possible.
  • Assemblies at both the ELC and 3-6 will still run but audience attendees will be parents only. We aim to record the assemblies and then show them to the rest of the primary school at a later date.

We will provide more clarity on other events as requires. In the meantime, if you have any queries about any of this please do get in contact

Below you will see some of the key events that are taking place this week. Please check your class blog for more information.

2022 Inter House Swimming Carnival – Friday 11 March – Week 6 – all students in year 3 to 6 participate

Please click on the two links below to find out about the upcoming swimming carnival. The first link contains information that hopefully answers all questions families may have regarding the event. The second link is the online nomination form that allows students to select the races that they wish to be in. I would appreciate nomination completed by Friday 11 February as this will give me adequate time to create the program and get organised. I highly recommend that you read the first link carefully before submitting the nomination form. At this stage there are no COVID restrictions on spectator attendance. Parents, if you are very keen to attend, it may be worth nominating to be a parent helper, as when restrictions were applied last year, parent helpers were given permission to attend.

Before school Beach Swimming/Fitness and Games – Friday before school, Term 1 at Sorrento Beach

I would like to offer all students the opportunity to participate in early morning fitness sessions before school at Sorrento beach on the south side of Hillarys Marina. These sessions could be a helpful preparation for the swimming carnival on Friday 11 March.

Time: 7:30a to 8a

Activities: 7:30a to 7:45a – beach games, 7:45a to 8a – 50m swim parallel to shoreline and 50m run back to start of swim – continuous for 15 minutes

*there are cold showers and change rooms right above the beach that we will be using

*please note that the number of students swimming in the water will depend on supervision ratios and beach conditions

When: Friday mornings in term 1, beginning in week 1 on Fri 4 Feb.(at this stage, our last session will end on Friday 4 March, however there is a possibility that it will continue on until the end of term 1)

Where: Sorrento Beach – meeting on the beach at life guard tower, south side of marina but north side of Sorrento lifesaving club

Transport: not provided

Supervision: staff will be present to run and monitor activities, however we request that parents and guardians be present for sessions on the beach. Parents are more than welcome to participate or assist in the water(the more supervision, the better)

If your child is interested in participating in these sessions, then please fill in the microsoft form that can be accessed by clicking the link or copying and pasting the link below into the URL bar. Whilst I understand that it may not be possible to attend every session, it’s very important that I get an initial guide as to how many students to expect so that I can plan adequately.

What to wear: generic shorts and shirt for beach games, bathers underneath for swim and school clothes ready for start of school day.
