School Shoes

Dear Parents,

I have received some feedback recently in regards to the changes to the school shoes for next year. This feedback has been both in support of the change, as well as from those with some concerns. Initially I wanted to let you know that we will be having a transition period for the remainder of this year and through the first semester of 2020, with the standard leather, lace-up, school shoes only being required from the start of Term 3.

The reason for the change is to lift the uniform standards in the school. Increases in uniform standards have been shown to bring about improvements in school pride, student behaviour and community appreciation/perception of the school, as well as other more minor areas. The changing of the shoes is just a small change through which we can continue to strive for such improvements.

I also thought I would take a moment to address those concerns raised, which have mostly been around the perceived impact on the amount of physical activity that the students will do at break times. I honestly and sincerely believe that the change in shoes will see no reduction in the amount of play that the students undertake at recess and lunch. From previous experience with other schools as well as with my own children, I have found that the standard leather school shoes still allow the students to experience all of the break time activities that other shoes would. I really don’t want to be reducing this is any way.

If comfort of the shoes is a genuine concern, the Uniform Shop as some recommendations for shoes that follow a lot of the same construction as a sports shoe, with the appearance of a more formal school shoe.

I understand that change always brings a level of uneasiness, so I want to thank you for your support in this area.

Kind regards,

Jarrod Heglund

Lost Property

Dear Parents,

Over the year staff work tirelessly to return lost property items to children whose items are named.  Regrettably we have accumulated many unnamed items which now need to be re-homed.   We have a large amount of jumpers and jackets with no name.  If your child is missing an item and please see Mrs Ford or Mrs McKillop in the office.

Sport and Physical Activity at Home

How you can nurture your child’s participation in sport and physical activity at home

Our school recently secured funding from Sport Australia to run a Sporting Schools program –

Term 1 Tee-ball, Term 2 Basketball, Term 3 Volleyball

We know the students loved these programs and it was a great way for children to find their 30 at school, however, while adults need 30 minutes of physical activity a day, children need 60. So, as well as finding 30 at school, they need to be finding 30 at home.

Sport Australia has provided us with some useful information on how parents and carers can continue to nurture a child’s participation in sport and physical activity and find their 30 at home.

Physical literacy provides the foundation for a lifelong connection to sport and physical activity. It is about developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours that give us the confidence and motivation to move more and lead an active, healthy life. You can help develop your child’s physical literacy by creating good habits with daily physical activity by increasing the opportunities for play-based activities at home. Entice your child/ren away from screen-time and teach them how to climb a tree, fly a kite, kick a footy or go for a bush walk together as a family. Encourage your child/ren to: help choose and plan the activities; set goals; and talk about how they feel while engaging in the activities. As a bonus, research has shown that children who are physically active achieve greater academic success and maintain higher attention levels during class at school.

See more examples of how you can support your child to develop their physical literacy and some activities you can do together as a family https://www.sportaus.gov.au/findyour30/challenge.

We can all develop our physical literacy at any stage of life, so why not do it together! Find a new sport or physical activity you can try with your family.

As a school community we also encourage active transport to school so walking or riding to and from school pick up and drop off are some other great ways your children can be active and as a bonus you’ll be finding your 30 and getting some physical activity too.

Students are supplied with a list of essential items and texts which have to be purchased for school. This is handled by Campion Education WA.

Resource lists will be available online through the Campion website.

From Monday 21 October – Thursday 14 November 2019

(If ordered after this date the goods may not arrive on time for the new school year.)

www.campion.com.au

Click on “Order Here” in the “For Parents and Students” block

Towards the bottom of the screen click “continue without an account”

Each resource list is headed by a caveat that states that books may be accessed from other sources if you wish.
