Term 2 – Notices – Week 7

Dear Community,

We hope you had a lovely long weekend celebrating our wonderful state. It was a great opportunity to have a small break in the middle of the term, ready to finish well. The students have returned to school with lots of stories of things they have been up to on the weekend. It was wonderful that we had such great weather too.

Over the last few weeks, so many of our Primary staff have unfortunately been unwell and yet they have persevered to ensure that our students wouldn’t miss out on opportunities such as Cross-Country, our ANZAC Day Service, Mother’s Day celebrations, the return of our first Assembly and Worships.

We recently reviewed an article in the Harvard Health Publishing revealing that “In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships”. We are so grateful for the amazing staff at Duncraig ELC and 3-6! This semester, particularly this term, has probably been one of the most challenging times we have experienced. We would like to thank every member of our Primary Staff for their tireless efforts, hard work, support, resilience, collegiality, flexibility, and adaptability to ensure our student’s school experience remains “as normal and rich” as it can be through these challenging times. We would also like to thank our families for their understanding and support in these unprecedented times. Together, we have ensured that our beautiful students continue to experience an engaging quality education that they will remember over the challenges COVID has brought in 2022.

With heartfelt thanks

Hannah Lockwood-Jones and Andrew Johnston

Term 2 – Notices – Week 6

Good Afternoon,

It is wonderful to say that with NAPLAN over and calmer weather there is a sense of business as usual across the ELC and Primary spaces here at St Stephen’s this week.

The Year 4 students enjoyed their incursion on Friday last week. They had a lot of fun taking part in the obstacles, playing by the camp fire as well as all the singing and dancing that took place. I imagine there were a lot of very tired children by the time they got home in the evening.

Looking across this week, we are excited to be holding the following events:

ELC:

Friday 3rd June – PP Alphabet dress up day

Friday 3rd June – Worship Years 1 & 2

3-6:

Friday 3rd June 2.20pm – Assembly 4Z

*Please note that swimming lessons will commence Tue 7th June for year 3 & 4, after the public holiday.

Wishing you all the very best for the week ahead and an enjoyable WA Day with family and loved ones.

Term 2 – Notices – Week 5

Good Afternoon,

What a blustery start to the week today! Whilst some students ran for cover, others took the opportunity to play in the rain with their gum boot and rain coats on. A lot of fun was had this morning.

Below are the events that are taking place at the ELC and 3-6 this week. .

ELC

Thursday 26 – May Kindy hospital incursion

Friday 27 – May ELC Cross Country

3-6

Friday 27 May – Year 4 Camp Day

The rainy weather looks like it will be here for a few more days. As a result, we are expecting increased traffic volume coming to school. Please be patient when using Kiss and Drive. Staff are working hard to move the children safely into waiting vehicles. We kindly ask you collect your child from the school building if your child is unable to strap themselves in, or get into the car unassisted. Please remember during the morning pick up and afternoon collection, at no time can you park in the Kiss and Drive area. If you have friends or family members collecting your child, please update them on our Kiss and Drive system and ensure they have an A4 sheet with the child’s name and class clearly marked for us to see.

Across our school community we have a number of people unwell. As seasonal colds, flu and Covid cases increase, it is important that students who are unwell are not sent to school. Let us work together to ensure our community is kept as safe as possible and ensure we are limiting the spread of illness’ where we can.

Currently we have a few staff members off sick. When a teacher is away due to illness, it is not a requirement for that staff member to answer their emails. If you need assistance with an urgent concern or inquiry, please contact the office to speak with Andrew or myself.

Whilst we all navigate some uncertainty at this time, it is good for us to reflect on this very well-known passage in the Bible which reminds us of God’s love and His heart for us all.

Psalms 23

A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

Wishing you all the very best for the week ahead.

Hannah Lockwood-Jones and Andrew Johnston.

2022 Primary Inter House Cross Country

Congratulations to all students that participated and worked hard in the Inter House Cross Country.

Well done to Timae for winning. Remembering that it is the lowest score that wins…Timae won with 783 points, while Alethea came in second with 822 points and third to Carana with 880 points.

Well done as well to our medal winners, who I know put in a lot of time and significant effort to get the results shown below.

Interschool Selection –  there were many students unable to participate on Friday. Any student that was unable to compete due to valid reasons and wishes to challenge for an inter school position need to email(parent email) me at daniel.parker@ststephens.wa.edu.au and state your intentions to challenge. The challenger will need to achieve a top 6 time for their year and gender to qualify. The first challenger timings will take place on Friday 27 May after recess. A second challenger timing will most likely be organized as some students may still have lingering health issues and the year 4 cohort has an incursion on the Friday. Please email ASAP with your intentions for planning purposes. Once I have a list of challengers and their availability, then I will directly email those families with specific information.

Year 3  Girls Champion Milly Withers

Term 2 – Notices – Week 4

Good afternoon,

As you are aware, there is a growing number of people across WA who are required to isolate as a result of COVID 19 and the impact of this is being felt in many industries, including education. At St Stephen’s we are trying to be as proactive as possible in managing the challenges which includes consciously practising appropriate COVID safe measures and organising appropriate relief for staff absences when required. If you need to keep your child away from school for this or any other reason, please remember to contact absentees so we can log the absence. Equally, if you bring your child to school a little later for any reason, please remember they need to be signed in by an adult before returning to class.

RAT Tests available for collection

We still have some families yet to collect their 20 free RAT tests per child from school. If you are yet to collect them, please come to reception either at the ELC or 3-6 spaces and we will be happy to provide them to you.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

We are excited to be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year across the ELC and Primary school. This is a fantastic initiative which will promote reading among our children. Further information has been provided through the class blog. However, if you’d like to know more, please contact your class teacher and they will be happy to help.

Clubs

We are delighted to be starting clubs again this week. If your child missed out on their preferred club, please be encouraged to try again next term.

This week

It is a reasonably quiet week in terms of events across the ELC and 3-6 which means plenty of learning can occur, which is always exciting. NAPLAN catch ups will be happening for any Year 3 or 5 student who missed one of the tests. Years 3-6 will be taking part in their cross country challenge on Friday and class 6F will have their assembly on Friday and we are delighted to be able to welcome parents into the assembly for the first time this year!

Finally, we would like to thank you for all you do and for your ongoing support to the school and community.

Hannah Lockwood-Jones & Andrew Johnston

For anyone happy to help out in the planning or on the day, please contact Julie Wookey on juliewookey12@gmail.com

Term 2 – Notices – Week 1

Welcome back to Term 2.

We hope you were all able to have a restful break and are ready for an amazing term.

We were all extremely buoyed by the announcement yesterday regarding the lifting of covid restrictions and hope that these changes can allow us to return to normal in most areas.

We are currently finalising what these changes will look like exactly in relation to specific areas and activities across the school and aim to notify you as quickly as possible with details of this.

With these changes, we are excited to be able to run our Mother’s Day events in both the ELC and 3-6 campuses on the afternoon of Friday 6th May 2022.

At 1pm on Friday 6th May, we would like to invite all mums and special guests to take part in a BYO picnic on our Primary oval. Lawn games and activities will be provided so you can enjoy lunch with your child and take part in some fun games during this time.

Over at the ELC, at 2.30pm – 3.20pm, Mum’s and special guests will be able to participate in a range of activities under the verandas of our classrooms or set up a rug and have a BYO afternoon tea.

We hope you will be able to attend these events to share some precious time with your child and to also allow them to honour you for all the amazing work you do as parents.

Please note that both of these activities are weather permitting. If the weather conditions force us to cancel either event, we will notify you as soon as we are able.

We would also like to inform you there are some changes to our Admin team at the Primary School. Alison McKillop has taken on a new role as Personal Assistant to the Deputies and will be spend time at both sites. We welcome Silvia Hoge to the Administration team at 3-6, and Debbie Schroeder the ELC. Please congratulate these ladies on their new roles.

We look forward to seeing you all over the course of this term.

Andrew Johnston & Hannah Lockwood-Jones

Term 1 – Notices – Week 10

As we start our final week of Term 1, we would like to express our most humble gratitude to all of you for your support as we have navigated the challenges of COVID-19 and all of the changing restrictions that have come with it. Most notably, with the mask wearing for our Year 3-6 students. This was particularly challenging, but the positive way you all approached the situation was great.

You will have seen the notification outlining the easing of restrictions last week. Although it doesn’t have a significant impact on schools, there are some things that we will be able to reinstate. We are currently looking at the variety of options for next term while also knowing that the restrictions could change again between now and the 27 April 2022. We will keep you informed nearer the time as we know more.

This is also the final week for our Head of Campus Dr Darnelle Pretorius. As I’m sure you are aware, Dr Pretorius is moving to Swan Christian College in Term 2 as Principal. We are very sorry to see her leave St Stephen’s, a community she has served for a long period of time and in such an exemplary way, but we wish her all the best in the next stage of her journey. Please keep Darnelle and her family in your prayers.

With the holidays now only a handful of days away, we would like to wish you all a fantastic and well-deserved break. We pray that you will all be able to enjoy the time with your family, staying safe and well.

Blessings

Andrew Johnston & Hannah Lockwood Jones

Dear Students and Parents

As I leave St Stephen’s School may I wish you well! Thank you to our wonderful primary students and colleagues for the gift of a collage of personalised flowers and a wonderful memories book from the School.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Sincerely

Dr Pretorius

Primary Music Notes – Term 2 Rehearsals

Term 1 – Notices – Week 9

Important dates

ELC – Friday 1 April – Year 2 camp fun-filled day and dinner together and going home at 7.45pm

ELC & 3-6 Monday 4 April – Non-Uniform day ( we will be raising money for the Falconer Family)

Thank you for supporting our celebration of Harmony Day last Monday. It was lovely to see a sea of orange around the Primary School and a vast array of different clothing representing our family’s heritage and culture.

Last week there were several events across the Primary School. There was lots of laughter and water exploration in Pre Primary. The children and staff had a wonderful time outside in water play.

Our older students did a great job as they sat their NAPLAN practice test. A huge thank you to all the staff who worked to prepare and set up devices for the testing.

It was wonderful to have parents attend our recent Wet Carnival at 3-6. It was an exciting and fun-filled event with Timae taking who were overall champions. Well done Timae.
