Term 3 – Notices – Week 7

Good afternoon Parents and Guardians,

I hope you all had a wonderful Fathers’ Day on Sunday, spending time honouring and remembering the dads and other important father-figures in your lives. Also, thank you so much for the incredible turnout to the events we held on Friday morning. It was just a pleasure to see so many dads come along.

As we look forward to Week 7 (only three to go!), here are a few dates to remember:

  • PAT Testing will continue across the week
  • Monday 6 – Year 2 Water Corp Incursion
  • Tuesday 7 – PP Tinkering Zone Incursion
  • Wednesday 8 – Year 3-6 Jumps and Throws Carnival
  • Friday 10 – Year 3-6 Sprints and Team Games Carnival
  • Monday 20 September – It’s not this week, but it’s coming up at the ELC – Harvest Ministries Zimbabwe fundraiser

As a friendly reminder, please remember to not park in the Kiss and Drive areas, as this can really negatively impact the flow of traffic through the school. We know it gets busy at times, so keeping the Kiss and Drive flowing is a simple step to help.

ELC FUNDRAISER – NON-UNIFORM DAY MONDAY 20 SEPTEMBER – FRUITFUL HARVEST

(Please bring along your donations)

What a blessing your school is to so many hurting children here in Zimbabwe.

Our schools are starting up on the 6 of September. As you can imagine children all over the world have been hearing about COVID, and have had to change their lives around because of it.

After over a year of lockdown, getting to go to school only having to stop again. The children we reach out to have no way of getting their education through Zoom or any other online studies.  This means that they just get further and further behind in ther studies.

We are so thankful that your school is wanting to do a fundraiser for these children.

(Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Nonprofit-Organization/Fruitful-Harvest-Zimbabwe-478202362199191/ )

This year we now have 3 teachers who will be going into the schools every week and doing worship and telling Bible stories through the Time With Jesus program.  And because of your help we will also be able to give eggs to them as well!!!

Thank you all for doing your part to help other children in a country so far away!!! May God bless you, your school and your families for they way you always think of others.

Traffic Flow

Please can we all be aware of working expediently in our drop-off and pick-up traffic flow by noting the following:

  • Parents/Guardians exit their vehicle to see children off or remove their bags from the car delaying the drop off process. It would be great if parents could stay in the car and students exit as quickly as possible.
  • Some Parents/Guardians walk into the school grounds leaving the vehicle in the kiss and drive during drop off and pick up. Please can this be avoided.
  • Parents do not use the full extent of the kiss and drive area for primary instead choosing to stop outside the front gate or side gate. Please move as far down the area as possible.
  • Children exit the vehicle opening a door onto the road. Please use the door opening onto the drop-off area.

On average our community are off the campus within 15 minutes for drop offs and pick-ups, which is wonderful considering the number of cars involved. Thank you for your patience and consideration as we continue to successfully navigate our traffic flow.

Term 3 – Notices – Week 5

Well, it’s finally here – we have found ourselves in the week of Aladdin Jr! Our Year 5s and 6s, as well as the incredible staff, have been putting so much work into the preparations for the production, this is the week where it all comes together. If you haven’t already purchased your tickets, I recommend getting online now (https://events.humanitix.com/dunaladdinjr) as there are only a few tickets left at some of the shows. It is sure to be a delight to watch.

This week is also Book Week, with various events happening across the week with a culmination on Friday with our Book Week Parade at 8:45-9:10am for Years 3-6, followed by the ELC parade from 9:30am – 9:50am. Please feel free stay for a picnic at the ELC after the parade (9:50am – 10:30am). A coffee van will be onsite but you will need to bring your own picnic blankets and snacks, but popcorn will be provided for the students.

On a different note, I wanted to encourage you with something that was shared with me the other day. In all the busyness, distraction and struggle that seems to be so present in our lives at the moment, sometimes I think we forget that we have the ability to look beyond that, and recognise the blessings that can be all around us everyday. This little story did a wonderful job of bringing that to light for me – I hope it can for you, too.

Term 3 – Notices – Week 4

Dear Families and Friends,

There has been lots of activity across the whole Primary School over the  beginning of term, including Celebrating 101 days of school, class assemblies, camps, music celebrations and rehearsals, to name but a few. It’s so lovely to see the students experiencing different events across the school. Thank you for your support and huge thanks to our wonderful educators across the School for creating, organising and delivering these events.

This week  across the School these things are happening:-

  • There will be a Year 5 camp information evening on Wednesday 18 August at 6.30pm.
  • 3F will be presenting their class assembly on Friday 20 August at 2.30pm.
  • On Friday 20 August our ELC students will be attending the Edu Book Week Performance 9:15am – 10:15am. Unfortunately, this is a student-only event.

Please also keep an eye on your child’s class blog for any further information relating to activities.

As we continue this term and year with such privileges to meet together mask free, we must keep in our prayers the other states in the country that are currently navigating lockdowns and rises in Covid numbers. We are aware of the impacts this will have on individuals, families and businesses in these areas. Many of our communities here at the School have loved ones across the country. Please ensure that you continue to extend kindness and support to these community members over the coming weeks. If you are personally affected and require support from the school please don’t hesitate to contact Jarrod or me.

We are blessed to have many parents and staff that regularly pray for our School community. This has been greatly appreciated over the years espically when we have been navigating challenging times.

24 “‘“The Lord bless you

     and keep you;

25 the Lord make his face shine on you

     and be gracious to you;

26 the Lord turn his face toward you

     and give you peace.”’

Numbers 6:24-26 NIV

Hope you have a wonderful week.

Term 3 – Notices – Week 3

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 3. I just wanted to take this opportunity to encourage you, if you haven’t already, to watch a recent TED talk by a seven year old girl, Molly Wright (https://www.ted.com/talks/molly_wright_how_every_child_can_thrive_by_five?language=en). Dr Pretorius recently used this as a basis to present a devotion to the staff at school, and I found it to be both challenging and inspirational. Essentially, it’s a message about the power of connection – particularly connection between parents and their young children. It really is worth watching. To take it to another level, Dr Pretorius challenged us on also thinking through the need that we have for a true connection with God. Again, if you haven’t already, it really is worth watching.

Here are a few dates and events to keep in mind for this week.

  • Monday 9 August
    • Year 1 “101 Day Celebration”
    • Year 2 to attend Primary (3-6) Worship 8:45am
    • Year 4B Camp starts (through Wednesday)
  • Wednesday 11 August
    • Year 4M Camp starts (through Friday)
    • Years 3, 5 and 6 Interhouse Music Festival
  • Thursday 12 August
    • ELC School Tour 9-10am
    • ELC Pizza Meal Deal
    • Running Club (all ages, every Thursday, 8:00-8:20, for fun, fitness and House points)
  • Friday 13 August
    • Worship Year 1 and Year 2

Kind regards,

Jarrod and Hannah.

Book Week Parade 2021

This year the Library Team have changed the way in which the Book Week parades across the School take place. There have been several requests from parents for the opportunity of our younger students to see the older students parade. As such, the first parade will now take place at 3-6. ELC students who have older siblings are invited to join their parents and watch the older students parade and then come to the ELC.

Year 2 Transition dates.

Our Year 2 students will be starting their transition program this term. Over this semester the Year 2 students will start to transition to Year 3. To help students familiarise themselves with the 3-6 space and staff, we have planned a series of sessions for them to attend.  Year 2 parents, please be aware of the dates where your child will need to be dropped at 3-6 rather than the ELC. If you have any questions regarding the transition events, please contact your classroom teachers.

Term 3:

  • Week 3 (Monday, 9 August) Worship @ 8:45am Year 2 students to be dropped off at the Primary School (3-6) for the start of the day (8:30am). Following worship, there will be a tour of the 3-6 space. The students will then stay for a play in the playground, eat their Crunch and Sip then walk back to the ELC. Year 2 parents are invited to stay for Worship. There will be a separate parent tour after worship with an opportunity for you to ask any questions or queries you may have regarding your child’s transition or the Primary School routines.

  • Week 4 (Friday, 20 August) Aladdin Dress Rehearsal @ 12:30pm  Year 2 students will walk across to the Primary School to watch the Dress Rehearsal of Aladdin. They will need to be collected from this location, not the ELC, at the end of the day.
  • Week 6 (Thursday, 2 September) Sport and Music @ 8:45am Year 2 students to be dropped at Primary at start of the day (8:30am). Students will have their Sport and Music classes with Mr Parker and Mrs Thorne at the Primary School (3-6). After their lessons, they will eat their Crunch and Sip, before returning to ELC at 10:15am.

Term 4:

  • Week 6 (Friday, 26 November) Orientation Day  Year 2 students to be dropped off at Primary at start of the day (8:30am). The children will spend the whole day at the Primary School and will need to be collected from this location, not the ELC, at the end of the day.

We wish you a wonderful week ahead and look forward to seeing you around the school.

Term 3 – Notices – Week 1

Dear Parents,
Welcome to Term 3! We hope you’ve had a blessed holiday with your family and we are excited to be welcoming your children back to school tomorrow. We have a wonderful term planned, full of great events and learning.
  • Wednesday – Years 3 and 4 Digital Learning Journey
  • Thursday – Kindy Storytime Incursion
  • Friday – NAIDOC Week assembly and activities
3-6 Construction Updates
I just wanted to give you a quick update on the construction that has occurred over the holidays. As you come back to school tomorrow, you will notice that the construction of the Multi-Learning Space is well underway (albeit slightly delayed by the weather over the holidays), and things are still on track nicely. We are anticipating that we could see some walls going up in the next few weeks.
You may also notice a large blue ‘pump’ that has been installed near the entrance to the kiss and drive. This is a new filter to reduce maintenance, and add longevity, to the school’s irrigation systems. Soon to come is a structure to make this pump more pleasing to the eye.
Due to the construction happening, there have been a number of areas that have been re-paved, so please be cautious as you walk around some areas that may have a layer of sand around.

Spelling in 3-6

Over the previous year or so, we have been examining our approach to Spelling and have been looking into methods, approaches and programs that could be used to enhance the learning and engagement that our students have. As part of this process, this term, in Years 3-6, we will be trailing a program called Sound Waves, instead of Words Their Way.

Sound Waves is a research-based program that works on the phonetic approach to learning how to spell. As we progress through the term, we will be assessing the merits of the program, as we look to how we will teach Spelling in the future. One change that you may notice is that word lists won’t be sent home as part of the homework. This doesn’t mean that Spelling homework won’t happen, but it will just be done differently.

If you would like to find out more about Sound Waves, they have provided a document specifically for parents, that you can find here – https://www.fireflyeducation.com.au/downloads/Sound_Waves_An_overview_for_parents.pdf

Dear Parents,

Names, names and names please. As the temperature goes down, the number of lost jumpers goes up. As you can imagine, it’s very easy to return lost items to the correct children when the name is the item. Can we please ask for your assistance with this and make sure your child’s clothing items are all named – especially jumpers and jackets. Actually, it might even be worth putting a pause on reading this blog, and do some labelling right now. I’ll wait for you to come back…

Thanks for taking a moment to do that. 😊

Term 2 – Notices – Week 9

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend and spent some quality time together with your children. We are getting close to the end of term and I know the excitement is building amongst the students, as many of them are already sharing their plans for some wonderful holidays. Before we get there though, there are still some great events happening here at school. Here are some that are coming up this week:

Wednesday 16th

  • Middle School Music Concert, where a few of our very talented Primary students are joining in with some Secondary students to put on a concert.

Thursday 17th

  • Primary Music Concert, which involves many, many of our gorgeous ELC and 3-6 students in various bands, ensembles and choirs.

Friday 18

  • ELC assembly run by PPM.

Have a wonderful week!

Hannah and Jarrod

3 – 6 Student Collection

In recent weeks, we have been navigating the changes that the construction process has brought along in regards to the collection of students at the end of the day. After recent feedback and assessment of the current arrangements, we have made a small change that should still allow for student safety while also keeping traffic moving as quickly as possible on the verge near the Primary oval.

We have now placed a teacher on duty on that edge of the oval, and will be allowing the students to wait behind the timber bollards that are there to keep them safe. Please know that this area is strictly for waiting patiently to be picked up, and no games or playing will be allowed, as this can easily spill over into the parking area.

With that, we will still be asking students to not be waiting at the crosswalk near the Music room, as groups of students here have been negatively impacting the flow of traffic out of the Kiss and Drive.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we look to find the most workable solution that also still keeps our students safe.

Communication 3 – 6

As you might imagine, and I’m sure many of you are in the same situation, we often receive a large volume of emails on a typical day and are always aware of balancing time spent on emails with time spent on working with your children. We are all conscious of not overloading with digital communication, and we certainly acknowledge that we don’t get it right all the time either. Can we ask for your assistance in working with us on this as we look to find that sweet spot of open, fruitful communication between the extremes of too much and too little?

Just for your information, on a practical note, it is worth noting that we do aim to avoid checking our emails outside of work hours, so you might not get an answer to your email for a day or so. On a similar note, if your email pertains to events during the day (eg. early pick up, appointments, etc.), it would be best to send these ones to the office, adminduncraigprimary@ststephens.wa.edu.au, as we are usually not able to check our emails whilst we are teaching.

Thank you for your understanding with this. We love your children and truly value you being an integral part of their journey here at school.
